Round 22 Review

Written by Dane on August 14 2023

Collingwood (16.13.109) defeated Geelong (15.11.101)

  1. Josh Daicos (138). With his brother out, big brother Josh held the fort with a career high score coming from a career high 38 touches playing across a wing. Also had 7 marks and 4 tackles plus 564 metres gained.
  2. Patrick Dangerfield (125). 26 disposals (16 contested) with 9 clearances, 4 tackles and 1 goal for Danger who only had 70% T.O.G.
  3. Tom Atkins (122). Elite game in the middle from Atkins who set a career high score on the back of a career high disposal tally of 34. Typically, added 8 tackles, 8 clearances and 19 contested touches.
  4. Jeremy Cameron (114). Dubious calls to say the least went his way but played an outstanding game, having 11 shots on goal for 7 majors from 14 touches. Surprised this didnt hit 125 minimum.
  5. Scott Pendlebury (111). Eighth ton of the year for Pendles, who is averaging a very nice 92. Had 21 touches (10 contested) with 7 tackles, 5 clearances and 1 goal.

Other 100+ scores: Tom Mitchell (103)

Disappointment: Tom Stewart (69) just couldn’t get involved and (personally) was a failed VC to start the round.

Rookies: First game of the year for Shannon Neale (55) who shared the ruck load and did enough with 10 touches and 12 hitouts. Nothing to cover for the experienced Pies.

Injuries: Massive news for Collingwood with a hamstring injury set to hold captain Darcy Moore out until at least the finals series. Gary Rohan also went down with a hip injury that saw him subbed. Stanley (hip) and Noble (ankle) were also listed on the injury report.

North Melbourne (12.5.77) defeated by Essendon (13.8.86)

  1. Nic Martin (137). A bounce back to form in a big way for Martin, dropping three scores in the 50’s before this 32 touch, 3 goal, 514 metres gained performance.
  2. Harry Sheezel (135). Made it two of the best cash cows in recent memory taking the top two spots after Sheezel found 32 touches at an elite 93% DE with just 1 clanger for his career high score.
  3. Luke Davies-Uniacke (125). Averaging 113 from 14 games but it’s been this six game ton streak that stands out. 28 touches with a game high 720 metres gained plus 1 major for LDU.
  4. Darcy Parish (122). Led Essendon with 679 metres gained from his 33 touches which included 16 contested and 9 clearances.
  5. Kyle Langford (98). Rounds out the top 5 thanks to his 16 disposal game (11 contested) plus 3 goals to be the difference on the scoreboard.

Other 100+ scores: Zilch

Disappointment: A failed VC on Stewart wasn’t much worse than Merrett (96) taking the C and copping a tag. Wouldn’t usually scoff at 96 but 192 in highlighted orange hurts.

Rookies: Future guns Wardlaw (87, 14 touches, 9 tackles) and Tsatas (77, 23 touches, 1 goal) led the way bar Sheezel. Menzie (74) also commendable with 11 touches and 2 goals. Third game for Baldwin (58) before his first price rise.

Injuries: Only one on the injury report was Simpkin with an arm, while Archer and Bryan were the subs.

Nice final game for Ben Cunnington, 2 goals and 24 touches (16 contested) plus 10 clearances, just shouting out a super career.

Sydney (18.6.114) defeated Gold Coast (13.12.90)

  1. Nick Blakey/James Rowbotton (123). Seventh ton for Blakey in 2023 came courtesy of 24 touches @ 91% DE with 8 marks, while Rowbottom was great with his inside mid role again, finding 18 touches, 8 tackles and 1 goal.
  2. Will Hayward/Matt Rowell (119). Nice all round game from Hayward, being the leading goal kicker on the ground with 4 majors from his 16 touches, also laying 5 tackles. Rowell top scored for the Suns thanks to 25 disposals (18 contested) plus 9 clearances and 6 tackles.
  3. Brandon Ellis (114). Has found himself in the top five a few times in 2023. 23 touches this week plus 8 marks, 5 tackles and 1 goal while running at 78% DE.
  4. Hayden McLean (108). Second ton on the trot for McLean who had 15 touches, 5 marks, 5 tackles, 6 hitouts and 2 goals to fill up the stat sheet.
  5. Tom Papley (105). 24 touches for Papley being that link man to round out the top 5, also slotting 1 goal.

Other 100+ scores: Noah Anderson (103), Isaac Heeney (102)

Disappointment: Heaps of players in the annoying 80’s including Miller, Mills, Witts and the inform Sam Flanders.

Rookies: Got nothing to cover in this one bar from the return of Matt Roberts (34) after a lengthy stint on the sidelines. For those low on trades, and if he took the field, at least it’s a score.

Injuries: Clean injury report, Hollands and Amartey those subbed out.

Brisbane (15.9.99) defeated Adelaide (13.15.93)

  1. Hugh McCluggage (133). Just the fifth ton for Hugh in 2023, tending to go big when he does though, all 5 over 115. 28 disposals (18 contested) with 5 tackles, 8 clearances and 2 goals in this one.
  2. Matt Crouch (122). Another week and another reason for Matt Crouch to get the apologies he deserves! Great game in the middle: 33 touches (17 contested), 9 clearances, 5 tackles, 87% DE. I’ll be watching closely for 2024 personally.
  3. Rory Laird (121). Backed up Crouch with 34 touches (11 contested) plus 8 tackles to be a fairly popular C option.
  4. Jordan Dawson (111). The elite trio completed here with Dawson also providing thanks to a 24 touch, 6 tackle performance plus a game best 612 metres gained.
  5. Harris Andrews (108). Rounds out the top five thanks to his 16 touch game that also had 7 marks and 1 major attached to it. I’d imagine he had plenty of intercept possessions to boost his score too.

Other 100+ scores: Mitchell Hinge (100)

Disappointment: Dunkley takes this for the second week in a row. Low metres gained, turnovers and just 16 touches held him to 62.

Rookies: I’ve given him plenty of shoutouts and 89 deserves another one for Darcy Wilmot (still running as my M8) who had 17 touches and 1 goal. If you brought in Keane, he had 73, while second gamer Borlase only had 3 touches for 7 before being subbed out.

Injuries: Gunston was subbed off early for the Lions with a knee, while the earlier mentioned Borlase was the sub for the Crows. Offical match report also had Hinge with a knee injury.

Carlton (9.6.60) defeated Melbourne (8.8.56)

  1. George Hewett (142). Monstrous numbers for Hewett in this hotly contested Saturday night contest. 33 disposals (23 contested) with 8 clearances and 6 tackles providing the best score of the game.
  2. Adam Saad (132). Season best score for Saad who had an elite first month before some injuries and Carltons form at the time limited his scoring potential. 25 touches with just 1 clanger plus 5 marks and 5 tackles for him.
  3. Angus Brayshaw (131). Got a fair bit of midfield time, finishing with 31 touches (16 contested) plus 9 tackles and 6 clearances leading to a season best score. Nice pick if you picked him as a Daicos replacement.
  4. Clayton Oliver (128). Triple double on return, finishing with 27 touches (14 contested), 10 clearances and 13 tackles. Just Satan things.
  5. Nic Newman (118). Another popular replacement for Daicos was Newman who rounds out the top five with this 33 touch, 9 mark game that also had a game best 521 metres gained attached to it.

Other 100+ scores: Patrick Cripps (116), Christian Petracca (107), Brodie Kemp (106), Trent Rivers (101), Jack Viney (100)

Disappointment: His ruck tandem was back but Max Gawn still had the split in his favour, which makes his 84 hurt more.

Rookies: Nothing special here, Fogarty (76) leading the scoring for previous rookies.

Injuries: James Jordon was subbed off tactically for Melbourne, but Docherty saw the red vest for the Blues with a calf, not ideal if came in for Daicos.

West Coast (4.9.33) defeated by Fremantle (20.14.134)

  1. Lachlan Schultz (135). Best score of Schultz’s career and his third ton in the past four games which came from 24 touches (10 contested) plus 5 goals. Also took home the B.O.G medal.
  2. Alex Witherden (133). Best Eagle by 35 points, Witherden popped his fifth ton since the bye thanks to 24 touches that ran at 95% DE. Also led the game with 583 metres gained.
  3. Luke Jackson (124). Another ton for Jackson who is stepping up with no Darcy, had 19 disposals (10 contested) with 6 clearances,  tackles, 26 hitouts and 1 goal.
  4. Hayden Young (118). In the middle again, playing a new role, Young found 25 disposals with 5 clearances and 8 tackles for his eighth ton of the year.
  5. Jordan Clark (114). Fourth ton of the year for Clark who rounds out the top five thanks to 10 marks and 28 touches that ran @ exactly 100%.

Other 100+ scores: Brennan Cox (108), Andrew Brayshaw (102)

Disappointment: Admittedly didn’t have much to do all night, but 83 from Luke Ryan makes it back to back 80’s.

Rookies: Second game for Worner who found a nice 15 touches for 56 points. 89 for Johnson and 82 from Sturt were also worth a mention as Sturt got a career high 4 goals.

Injuries: Corbett and Cole the initial subs in this game, don’t think either was for an injury. Offical report only has Allen (shoulder) on it, as if a fifth hundred point loss for the season wasn’t bad enough.

Hawthorn (9.13.67) defeated Western Bulldogs (9.10.64)

  1. Jai Newcombe (174). Massive career game from Newcombe against probably the best midfield in the comp. 40 touches, 12 marks, 1 goal, juts 1 clanger and 85% DE led to this career high. Could be set for a massive breakout in 2024.
  2. Tim English (143). Talk about breakouts, English has upped his average by 24 from 105 to 129, and unless he spuds it up in the last fortnight, will be the highest scoring player in the game for 2023. 10 touches, 5 marks, 4 tackles, 32 hitouts and 1 goal on Sunday afternoon.
  3. Karl Amon (133). Third ton in a row for Amon, who had a fortnight off but came back with a season best score thanks to 32 touches and 13 marks while running at 90% DE and having a game best 702 metres gained. 1 goal to top it off as well.
  4. Dylan Moore (120). If Moore plays well, the Hawks tend to play well. Averaging a nice flat 90 now, he scored his sixth ton from 24 touches and 1 goal.
  5. Marcus Bontempelli (115). Avoided the Maginess tag but the Hawks engine room was dominant. Had most of his points come late as he tried to will a win, finishing with 23 touches (12 contested), 6 clearances, 8 tackles and a team best 686 metres gained.

Other 100+ scores: James Worpel (113), Jacob Koschitzke (110)

Disappointment: Jack Macrae (57) only had 16 touches in the less friendly outside role. Treloar (77) has been so underrated but also struggled.

Rookies: Really nice game from O’Donnell with 15 touches @ 86% DE plus 6 marks giving him a debut season best of 88. Nothing else to mention after that. Actually, Weddle for his 72 covering Daicos for those with no trades left, respectable outing.

Injuries: Big news SuperCoach wise with Tom Liberatore being subbed out with concussion pretty early, meaning he’ll miss next week too. Wingard also off early, a suspected achilles issue for him.

St Kilda (14.9.93) defeated Richmond (8.9.57)

  1. Rowan Marshall (143). His third 140+ for the year, Marshall overcame the usually restrictive Tigers ruck setup to finish with 23 touches, 9 marks, 6 tackles, 20 hitouts and 1 goal.
  2. Seb Ross (119). Returning to the side, Ross had most of his time in the middle, finishing with 25 touches (10 contested) plus 8 marks and 7 tackles for this season best score.
  3. Jack Sinclair (115). Constructive as usual, Sinclair led the game with 33 touches and was second overall with 639 metres gained. 10 marks and just 2 clangers next to his name.
  4. Jade Gresham/Toby Nankervis (110). Three goals from 22 touches plus 6 tackles for Gresham’s best return of the year, while Nank produced his eighth ton of an interrupted year thanks to 16 disposals, 7 tackles and 28 hitouts.
  5. Jayden Short (109). Just scores so much better down back. Short led the game with 727 metres gained from his 26 touches and 7 marks for his seventh ton in 14 games.

Other 100+ scores: Callum Wilkie (103)

Disappointment: Saints captain Jack Steele made it another premium falling in the 80’s this week with a 23 touch, 5 tackle game resulting in 81. Crouch (64) has had an elite season but this was a near season worst.

Rookies: Windhanger (73) had 19 touches and 1 clanger which wasn’t bad, moving on…

Injuries: Tactical subs with Soldo and Sharman subbed out. No one on the injury report.

Port Adelaide (21.10.136) defeated GWS (13.7.85)

  1. Zak Butters (139). Third 130+ in a row for Butters, playing a starring role to collect 34 touches (13 contested) plus 7 clearances, 9 marks and DE of 84% to lead the final game of the round.
  2. Connor Rozee (130). Thirteenth ton for Rozee in 2023. 29 touches, used it well @ 82% DE, 6 clearances, 6 tackles.
  3. Tom Green (129). Another young gun in this top 5, Green led the Giants scoring with 31 touches (12 contested) plus 6 tackles and 2 goals.
  4. Dan Houston (128). Quiet last week but back in the big scores thanks to 30 touches and 10 marks across half-back, finishing it off with 1 goal and a game best 698 metres gained.
  5. Miles Bergman (116). Best score of Bergmans career and a lot of the damage came early as he slotted (I think) all 3 of his goals in the first quarter. Finished with 15 touches for the game

Other 100+ scores: Kieran Briggs (115), Darcy Byrne-Jones (112), Ollie Wines (111), Jason Horne-Francis (103)

Disappointment: Coniglio (70) had just 19 touches and 5 clangers, while Kelly (82) had a tag which held him back and is a cheap option if you have a trade spare.

Rookies: First game for McMullin who seemingly had nice pressure up forward with 5 tackles and 6 touches for 29 points. 76 for Williams added to his impressive season average of 66.

Injuries: Seems like an injury free game again, just Haynes and Hayes those being subbed around the 3QT mark.
