Melbourne vs Sydney

First win for the Demons and it came on the back of a dominant performance from big man Max Gawn. How he only scored 113 is beyond me, especially with 58 hit outs, 19 touches and several intercept marks throughout the last quarter. Clayton Oliver picked up plenty of ball but once again his disposal let him down, limiting his score to 87. For Supercoaches, late inclusion Marty Hore had a great game and would be stiff to lose his spot next week. Salem showed some of the promise from round 1, while Nathan Jones was kicked 3 and had 21 touches. Mentions to Jayden Hunt and Christian Petracca who have showed some very good signs up forward for Melbourne supporters over the last 2 weeks.

Sydney should probably stop playing at the SCG, they just can’t seem to win there. Heeney had his second great game in a row, scoring 130, while Jake Lloyd hit the ton again. Harry Cunningham had a game worth talking about, 10 tackles, 25 touches leading to 130 points, a career high. Luke Parker scored exactly 100 from 22 touches, while a huge takeout from the game was Oliver Florent. He picked up 25 touches, kicked 2 goals and scored a career high 127, he looks a player of the future. First gamer McInerney only got the one kick and 2 tackles for 21 points, but I guess it can only go up from here!

Question from the game: Better player when their career ends, Nathan or Zak Jones?

Supercoach query: How many people will now bring Heeney back in?

Collingwood vs Western Bulldogs

A win for the Pies taking them to 2-2. Brodie Grundy the star again, 58 hitouts, 23 touches (18 contested) for a massive 160 points. Those of us who gave him the vice-captaincy have had a good start to the round. Tom Phillips had 29 touches with 2.1 for 116 points. Sidebottom scored 108 while the rest of the pies midfield struggled to score big points for their owners. Wishing a quick recovery to Chris Mayne, who was taken to hospital in his 200th game.

The Doggies were really in this game, but couldn’t get the find the polish in the big moments. A welcome comeback for Jason Johannisen, 25 touches resulting in 84 points. I’m really looking to bring in a bloke called Bontempelli this week, 36 touches with 16 contested coming to 127 points, his season average now sitting at 126.5. Fellow midfielders Macrae and Liberatore both scored over 100 again. Hunter and Daniel picked up plenty of ball and but only scored 97 and 93 respectively, mainly due to almost no contested ball in their games. Between Crozier and Naughton there were plenty of highlights which would’ve made Doggies supporters excited for the future.

Question from the game: I understand Brodie Grundy is one of the league’s premier ruckman and that Tim English is about 10 games into his career and a beanpole, but how do you have such a difference in hitout differential throughout the game?

Supercoach query: Is Josh Dunkley done for the year Supercoach wise?

Geelong vs GWS

Not too much going Geelong’s way in Supercoach terms from this game. Popular rookie picks in Clark, Miers, Atkins and Constable all scored below 70. Keep an eye on the news for a verdict on Patrick Dangerfield’s hit off the ball, a week off would add salt to the wound after he only scored 66 from 17 disposals. Ablett kicked 2 goals and had 16 touches, something I think is about to become the norm for him. Once again Tom Stewart was a star, 26 touches (23 kicks) and 8 marks resulting in 124 points. Luke Dahlhaus (49) and Sam Menegola (51), also disappointed their owners.

For the Giants, they’re now sitting at 3-1 and it was their midfield that really did the damage. Coniglio (104), Kelly (114) and Hopper (106) all had 30+ touches, while Lachie Whitfield did his usual across halfback with 31 disposals and 10 marks resulting in 131 points. Zac Williams had his first real stinker of the season with 60 points, while Shane Mumford will be in a lot of coaches minds this week, 111 for him. Tim Taranto is currently my pick-up of the year, another good game for him resulting in 113 points. Once again a speedy recovery to Giants co-skipper Callan Ward, who has a suspected ACL.

Question from the game: Is it bye bye Brownlow chances for Dangerfield?

Supercoach query: Is Shane Mumford worth the risk considering he’s never played a full season with injury and suspension holding him back?

Essendon vs Brisbane

The Bombers now have 2 on the trot largely thanks to Anthony McDonald Tipungwuti. His 7 goals was a career high and led to 143 Supercoach points. Zach Merrett had the ball on a string and that resulted in 155 points, while Shiel (115) and Zaharakis (119) were again reliable in the middle of the ground. Mitch Brown was everywhere for 25 touches, 3 goals and 11 marks, but I doubt anyone reading this has him in their team. The speedsters in Smith and Saad both disappointed their owners, both scoring in the 50’s

Bit of a one-man-show for the Lions, and once again it was Lachie Neale. 40 touches with 22 contested got him to 140 points, a must have. Supercoach wise I couldn’t find much else. Zorko seems irrelevant so far this year, Harris Andrews got back into triple figures (100), while Witherden and Martin were again solid with 92 and 105 respectively.

Question from the game: Are Essendon back in finals contention after the horror that was the first 2 rounds?

Supercoach query: Anybody willing to take a punt on David Zaharakis?

Richmond vs Port Adelaide

The upset of the round in my book. The undermanned Tigers just found a way, through incredible performances at either end of the ground by Tom Lynch (6 goals, 103 points) and Dylan Grimes (17 touches, 124 points). First gamer Jack Ross was everywhere, racking up 25 disposals and 87 Supercoach points, keep and eye on him. Sydney Stack couldn’t back up last week’s effort, scoring only 40, but his job security does look pretty good at the moment.

Boak (134) and Rockliff (140) were both on fire again for Port, 33 and 37 touches for them respectfully. Brad Ebert, who constantly flies under the radar had another 23 touches and 2 goals for 130, while off-season recruit Ryan Burton scored 106. Unfortunately for Supercoaches, plenty of unwanted scores in this game, the worst of them being popular rookie Butters (23) and the experienced Westhoff (49).

Question from the game: Can Richmonds back 6 revolve around Dylan Grimes?

Supercoach query: Who’ll be the first Port rookie that we move on? Butters, Duursma, Rozee or Drew

North Melbourne vs Adelaide

A hot run home for North Melbourne got them their first win of the year, with Ben Brown (102 points, 4 goals) being the difference up forward. Around the ground was solid performances by the important players at the Kangaroos, with Higgins (93), Goldstein (113) and Tarrant (93) leading the way. Luke McDonald, who was looking to be on the rise this season, could only muster 37, while Davies-Uniacke (60) has come back down the earth after a hot start.

Adelaide are very hard to read during the early goings of the season, a loss after having control of most of the game for them. Rory Laird returned back to the 100’s after a few weeks out, while Alex Keath had a great game, his 20 touches and 14 marks getting him to 107 points. Brodie Smith was the only other Crow in triple figures, scoring 104 from 18 touches at 94% efficiency.

Question from the game: Will we see a worse miss this year than Josh Jenkins from the goal square?

Supercoach query: Is Reilly O’Brien in the back of anyone’s mind depending on how long Jacobs is out?

West Coast vs Fremantle

The Eagles won ugly, and it was their leaders who really held it together. Shannon Hurn won best on ground honors after his 32 touch, 8-mark game for 139 Supercoach points. Following him were Brad Sheppard (27 touches at 100% efficiency), Jack Redden with 145, Yeo scored 114 while Gaff had another 35 disposals for 104 points are will be in a fair few more teams come round 5. Second gamer Josh Rotham looks the goods down back with a 98, but Dom Sheed disappointed, only 65 for him.

Fremantle were led in the charge by soon to be 300-gamer David Mundy. 36 touches with 23 contested helping him to 151 points, a welcome return for anyone who kept him. Walters, Lobb and Ryan all gave their owners good scores, while rookie Lachie Schulz, who was on the bubble, only managed 36.

Question from the game: Would the addition of Fyfe have given Fremantle the win?

Supercoach query: How many people will be bringing in Gaff?

Carlton vs Gold Coast

Poor Carlton, 0-4 and I can’t find a win for them anytime soon. Patrick Cripps started really slow but pumped out a 30 touch, 2 goal game with 12 tackles for a huge 169 points. Walsh once again over 100 from 28 touches. A couple of old-timers wound back the clock, with Kade Simpson, Marc Murphy and Dale Thomas all having great games and that reflected in the scores (107, 114, 98). Nic Newman scored 94 to once again put a smile on coaches faces, but popular rookie Setterfield may miss a week for a dangerous tackle.

Another game decided by under a kick for the Suns, with Jack Bowes kicking the winner with 10 seconds to go. Led at the coal face by Touk Miller (14 tackles, 31 touches) and David Swallow (30 touches), with good support from my personal favourite Brayden Fiorini (30 touches for 93 points). Sam Collins in the 80’s once again, and POD ruckman Jarrod Witts picking up 13 touches and 45 hitouts for a well made 107.

Question from the game: Why was Mitch McGovern not on the goal line?

Supercoach query: Is Walsh a chance to average 90+?

St Kilda vs Hawthorn

Another close win for the Saints, taking them to 3-1. Had this game on in the background at work, and everytime I looked up, either Ross (37 disposals) or Billings (34) seemed to have the ball. Rowan Marshall must read this review because he seems to want to prove something, another big score for him (119). Another 3 Jack’s (Newnes, Steele, Lonie) all scored over 100 for St Kilda, while Callum Wilkie had 21 touches for 112.

Major injury concerns out of this game for the Hawks, with Stratton, Frawley, Cousins, Smith and Nash all in doubt for next week. Supercoach wise, Sicily had a great game with 28 touches (23 kicks) and 10 marks, giving him 119 points, while Tom Scully looks to be injury free and had another nice game, 2 goals and 26 touches getting him to 110. Scrimshaw was fantastic across the ground, with a great score of 98 meaning a big price rise is on the way.

Question from the game: St Kilda for finals?

Supercoach query: Seb Ross for anyone? Has averaged over 100 for a few years now and can guarantee 25+ disposals a week.

  1. Good read, didn’t watch either of the games on Sunday. Hawks have been hit hard at the injury front so far.

    Go Walla! 7 goals

  2. I think I read somewhere that the big sauce looks likely out for another 4 weeks. If that’s the case, I think I might drop Parker, move bines forward and bring him in.
And find a spot for stack. Maybe at the expense of Bailey Scott. Rotham was a late in I think, but his BE would be juicy too.
Double downgrade most likely for me thus week. Will ride with a few underperforming players- dunks and darling for the time being

  3. Didn’t see Wc v Freo match. Can anyone tell me if Dom Sheed had his fare share of midfield time this week or did he just have a stinker. Cheers.

    1. bit of both. was at the game and he was on his own a whole lot and not used, but think the role he was playing and racking them up is now gaff’s.

bit of a downer and think he’ll get back up, but i think his 40 possession games might be gone for the moment.

      1. Thanks Matty for your observations. Tbh thought he might have been elevated to the number 3 midfielder behind Gaff and Shuey thus getting more midfield minutes, but doesn’t seem to be the case. Hmm

    1. Was copping a tag, didn’t seem fully fit and most of the midfielders weren’t firing on the day so they all under performed. Spent a fair time forward too

      1. Thanks Nato.
With that score and his likely price drop at least now I can take another week to consider the Dunkley to T Kelly trade.
