Round 5 Review

Collingwood vs Brisbane

The Lions have now had 2 bad losses in a row and it was very hard to find positives out of the game. Only two Lions hit triple figures, those being McCluggage (105) and Berry (100). Popular picks Alex Witherden and Lachie Neale both finished in the 90’s, but coaches were hoping for a lot more from their premiums. Joining them in the frustrating zone of the 90’s included Rich (99), Josh Walker (94) and Zorko (93). Harris Andrews looks to have sustained a hamstring injury, but up until that point looked in good form.

Collingwood look to be gathering some exciting form, led by the hard running,  gun midfielder, Adam Treloar. He picked up 35 touches of the leather, (largely uncontested one’s), but used it at 80% and finished on 150. Dayne Beams had a solid all around game in his return to Brisbane, picking up 26 touches and a memorable goal. 4 goals for Brody Mihocek got him to 117 points, while big man Brodie Grundy got to exactly 100. Pendlebury, Crisp and Stephenson all scored over 100, while youngster Callum Brown had a very good game with 2 goals and 14 disposals.

Question from the game: Where to for the young Lions now?

Supercoach query: If Supercoach was based on players who played their role with no fuss, would Travis Varcoe be first picked?

Essendon vs North Melbourne

Honestly not much went right for the Roos, they just didn’t turn up for such a primetime game. In Supercoach news, only two players hit the ton, those being Cunnington (29 touches, 101 points) and Jamie McMillan (24 touches, 102 points). Elsewhere, Higgins had 30 touches, while Trent Dumont had 1 better with 31. Mason Wood looked dangerous but couldn’t convert early chances which would’ve made the game more interesting, and like many of his teammates, faded away quickly.

3 on the trot now for Essendon and finals look a real possibility. Led by the midfield duo of Zach Merrett (137) and Dylan Shiel (120), the Bombers looked very quick and dangerous all day. Captain Dyson Heppell had 32 touches and 11 marks for 118, while up forward it was Orazio Fantasia who kicked 4 goals for 130 Supercoach points. Hooker and Hurley were walls down back, while swingman Mitch Brown deserves a mention for his 3 goals and 20 touches. First gamer Brayden Ham looks about 12 years old but used it extremely well, while Joe Daniher in his first game back kicked 2 goals and looked as exciting as ever.

Question from the game: Can the Bombers quick ball transition work on the big stage this Thursday?

Supercoach query: How does Goldstein score 49 points in the second half from 3 touches and 10 hitouts, especially in a losing team?

Port vs West Coast

I have no idea what happened to my Eagles, we seem to have a game per year in Perth where we just don’t turn up (vs Essendon 2018, vs Port 2017, vs Bulldogs 2016). Anyway, moving on. Shannon Hurn performed well for his owners again, 33 touches with 24 kicks, while going at 84% got him to 121, he is looking like a must have at this point. Fellow defender Brad Sheppard also hit the ton, as did Lewis Jetta. Jack Petruccelle had a game that all but guarantees his spot for at least until the bye rounds, his career best 5 goal haul got him to his first ever Supercoach 100. Andrew Gaff had 32 touches, but it wasn’t good news for the big forwards, with Kennedy (24 points) and Darling (9) having very bad days.

Taking nothing away from Port Adelaide, they played a cracking game of football. Inside bull Ollie Wines looks to be hitting some form, 35 touches and a goal got him to 110 Supercoach points. Sam Gray topped scored with 127, while on the other end, Robbie Gray only scored 47. Boak and Rockliff both got into the 90’s, as did Ebert. In good Supercoach news, all the Port rookies in Drew, Butters, Duursma and Rozee had good scores and will continue to grow in cash.

Question from the game: Will there be a selection surprise this week for the Eagles after such a bad showing?

Supercoach query: Can Dom Sheed re-capture his form from the first 3 rounds?

GWS vs Fremantle

Fremantle really ran away with this in the last quarter, a large reason for the win being how dangerous Matt Taberner was up forward. Bad kicking for goal limited his score, but 3 goals amongst 13 marks and 21 possessions got him to 121 points. Walters was in sublime form, his 3 goals and 25 touches got him to 139, the best score from the game. Fyfe got to 110 for his owners, while Luke Ryan was 10 points behind his skipper. Ed Langdon might end up being better than his brother, his 32 touches with 10 marks went at 90% to net him 130 Supercoach points, while Jesse Hogan looks to be hitting some form up the ground, picking up 22 touches and 3 goals for 89 points. Young defender Taylin Duman (who onced kicked 9.7 on me in 3 quarters during under 15’s), faces a nervous wait due to a high hit on Lachie Whitfield.

For the Giants, only Stephen Coniglio cracked the ton, while many Supercoach relevant players didn’t get the scores coaches were after. Josh Kelly had a 97, Lachie Whitfield 86 and Zac Williams played well across half back for his 91. Shane Mumford will rise in price, while first-gamer Jackson Hately will be in a lot of coaches minds after his 22 disposal, 95 point game on debut.

Question from the game: How are we reading the Dockers in the early going of the season?

Supercoach query: In all legitimacy, I get he was in a losing team, but how does Josh Kelly score 97 from a 29 touch, 10 contested possession, 5 tackle game, while going at 82%? (I don’t even own him and I’m mad about it)

Melbourne vs St Kilda

4-1 and top of the ladder for St Kilda. Recruit Dean Kent played a starring role with 3 goals to go along with 20 touches, finishing with 123 points. Tim Membrey kicked 4, while Billings had 28 touches and 2 goals for 93 points. Acres and Steele scored twin 103’s, while across halfback Shane Savage had 27 touches at 88% efficiency for 101 points. Rowan Marshal’s hot streak ended, scoring only 50, while Parker reached his breakeven with 53, despite only getting 8 touches. Even still, I think his job security is at 100%, there would be no reason to change a winning lineup! Jarryn Geary looks set to miss a few weeks with a late game leg injury.

The usual contributors for Melbourne with Gawn (126) and Oliver (108) leading the charge from a Supercoach perspective. Marty Hore (who I’m pretty sure is just a clone of Michael Hibberd from 2017) had another great game and will make chunks of money for weeks to come, 20 touches with 13 marks got him to 96 points. Braydon Preuss had a good game with 97 and doesn’t look to be affecting Gawn at all in the games so far.

Question from the game: Is it time that we can realistically put the Saints into finals contention?

Supercoach query: Will Angus Brayshaw really hit his straps this season?

Richmond vs Sydney

Sydney had a ridiculous amount of ball in this game, with notching up 30 touches or more, but unfortunately it didn’t equal a win for the Swans. Jake Lloyd had the most of it, with 37 mostly uncontested touches getting him to 111. A single point behind him was skipper Josh Kennedy, on 110, with Papley and Dawson both scored 104. Heeney (98) and Jones (97) also performed well, while Luke Parker got his 3rd hundred of the year with 102. First-gamer Rowbottom looks a good prospect, with 13 touches and 4 tackles in his debut. Special mentions to Kieren Jack for 250 games, as well Buddy Franklin for moving up a spot on the all-time goals list!

Richmond regained one of their stars in Dustin Martin and maybe the week off gave him a fresh start to the 2019 season. With 3 goals and 25 touches he was the difference in the game, his 115 points made his patient owners happy. Dion Prestia picked up 32 touches to score 121 and lead all comers on the ground. Youngsters Sydney Stack (80) and Jack Ross (57) both had decent games and will make good money.

Question from the game: Where will Franklin finish on the all-time goals list?

Supercoach query: Is Jack Ross a trade in target or will people wait a week on Hately?

Western Bulldogs vs Carlton

You can’t help but feel happy for the Blues, their first win of the season. On the back some very good performances in recent weeks, the win was emotion filled. Harry McKay led the way, scoring 153, coming from 20 touches (13 contested), 4 goals and 11 marks. Next in line was Sam Petrevski-Seton, who had a career day with 35 touches and 136 points. First-year players in Walsh (3 hundreds in a row) and Gibbons (maiden Supercoach 100) were sparks for the Blues all game long. Zac Fisher and Marc Murphy both scored over 100 as well, while the handball-happy Cripps (32 handballs in 37 touches) scored 110. Kreuzer (106), Plowman (104), Newman (84) and Simpson (92) were the other notable scorers.

Not much went right for the Bulldogs, a heavy loss in a game they expected to win will really anger their supporters. Yet within that, some positives did happen. Tim English (the week I traded him out of course) had a stellar game with 13 touches, 7 tackles, 5 marks and 28 hit outs, which got him to 99 and looks like he could turn into a gun ruckman. Will Hayes in his first game picked up 21 disposals and scored 70, while fellow debutant Young had 12 touches and showed good signs. Daniel and Bontempelli both got into the hundreds again, while Liberatore (98), Dunkley (95), Macrae (97) and Johannisen (97) all fell just short.

Question from the game: Can the Blues ride this momentum and score some more wins in the near future?

Supercoach query: Can Walsh average 100 for the year?

Adelaide vs Gold Coast

The Crows won in style for Eddie Betts 300th game. The man of the moment kicked 6, with his last surely in contention for Goal of the Year. Overall a dominant win for the Crows with many big Supercoach scores. Since there were so many, I’ll list all those who went into triple figures. Mackay led the bunch with 121, while Betts and Brad Crouch got exactly 100, in between were Sloane, M.Crouch, Ellis-Yolman, Smith, Murphy and Atkins. Laird got to 93, while O’Brien could possibly keep Sauce Jacobs out once he’s ready to return, another good game for him with 13 touches at 100% to go along with 28 hitouts. Greenwood (88) made a great return with 2 goals and 18 touches, but the win was soured by an injury to Wayne Milera with a dislocated shoulder.

Not a great game for the Suns, so won’t have much to write about here. Ballard top scored with 103 while Hanley also got to 100. Fiorini had 30 touches again, while Miller and Bowes both had good games in the middle as well. Bad scores for popular rookies in Collins (45) and Burgess (26).

Question from the game: Who would you rather have in your team, Eddie Betts or Steven Milne?

Supercoach query: Will Laird finally get back to the 120+ range with Milera seemingly gone for a few weeks?

  1. Thanks for the update, wasn’t expecting it over easter.

The Jack Ross/Hately Question might solve itself if Ross is rested against Melbourne. It’s a 4 day break and he is a young player. Guessing Tigers will make 3 changes just to freshen up. Jack Riewolt is a likely in.

    1. Great write up.
Pondering Ross vs Hately as well.
Read that Cotchin will be given another week so could mean Ross plays this week however not sure on future job security. Hardwick impressed with him but Cotchin comes in for some one. Don’t want to make same mistake as last year of leaving Higgins out for fear of being dropped.
Hately was impressive after being sideline by grandular fever at start of season and had managed field time to reach 95. Future gun.. Scott would make way.
Other player I am considering is Baker. A bit more expensive however if he plays till byes a good swap to Burgess via DPP who is cooked. He will take Moore’s spot in forward line with Moore in fefence and Baker will be loop hole option with Pettruccelle next week if I pick him.
      T/u Ross
      T/d Baker

      1. I’m thinking you have to just keep downgrading the mid rookies over and over for your cash gen. Don’t get attached except for Walsh who is a keeper at this point. As soon as right just cull them for next bubble boy over and over.
Have to keep all m9-11 making cash.

        1. Will be chucking up a game report after I’m off this damn long flight. Unfortunate my predictions would’ve largely been all about Danger lol.

Keep an eye on the comment section all!

  2. Havn’t seen much of Baker but two really good scores make him look like a good option. What does his job security look like? Will he get dropped when Riewoldt is back? If his position in the team looks safe then Parker to him may be an option

  3. Cripps: Almost 40 disposals, double digit contested possies and clearances…

…only 83m gained. Having that many disposals and having sub-100m gained has to be a first.

    1. Also puts into perspective Lloyd’s ability to be invisible for Sydney but at the same time rack up huge SC scores. Gets huge amounts of uncontested ball, disposes it almost always by foot at a relatively high DE%, and nets huge metres gained numbers.
