Quick apology too all the readers out there who expect this come a Monday morning, had a romantic week/weekend away with the other half so thought it was best to put down the electronics until the plane landed back home. But for now, on with the review!

West Coast vs Collingwood

A thriller to start the round on Friday night, but unfortunately for the Eagles the result didn’t go their way. Elliot Yeo was the best for them with 26 touches, 8 tackles and 2 goals to finish on a team high 116, making him the only Eagle in triple figures. Redden (95) and McGovern/Naitanui (94) (edit: Nic Nat to miss potentially rest of season with ankle injury) were the others who got close, but scores really dip from there. Premiums in Gaff (82), Hurn (82) and Shuey (87) didn’t hit the heights owners were after, while anyone who owned forwards Cripps (9, injury effected) or Kennedy (7) would’ve been crushed by their scores. Up forward Jarrod Cameron kicked 4 goals, while Jack Darling kicked 3 to be dangerous all night.

A huge win for the Pies to get their season back on track. Brodie Grundy (137) once again led the Supercoach scoring due to his massive game of 22 touches (12 contested), 8 tackles and 31 hitouts, while the guy at his feet Adam Treloar had a bunch of the ball again (39 touches) to net his owners 125 points. Twin 122’s went to probably the best on ground Mihocek (4 goals, 10 marks), and backline patroller Crisp (30 touches, 9 tackles). Another set of twin scores, this time with midfield mates Pendlebury and Sidebottom both finishing on 119. Furthermore, Aish (100), Phillips (106) and De Goey (101) all scored over 100, while Maynard (93) was just short. Second gamer Quaynor had 11 touches to finish on 54, while 2 points behind him was first-gamer and mid-season recruit, Josh Noble. Mason Cox kicked 3 goals, while the earlier mentioned Phillips and De Goey kicked 2 each, but sour news out of the night was a fairly innocuous hamstring injury to Darcy Moore.

Question from the game: How will the injury to Moore effect the Pies backline?

Supercoach query: Whos the better prospect, Noble or Quaynor?

Sydney vs Carlton

3 wins from their last 5 games and Carlton is on their best little run in years. Recruit Nic Newman led the Supercoach scoring with 147 points, a great return for anyone who still had him. He picked up 32 touches (87% DE) and 13 marks on the day, while next best was Kruezer on 119. Twin 117’s came from midfield mates Murphy and Ed Curnow, with the former having 29 touches, while the latter had 28 plus 10 tackles. Patrick Cripps was tagged in the second half but still pulled in 28 touches (19 contested) to finish up on 115, while other good scores came from Casboult (104) and Walsh (103). Will Setterfield (70) had a great opening half but faded, while possible breakouts next year in Fisher (86), Silvagni (73) and SPS (75) all played their part. Lastly, the day was soured by an injury to Hugh Goddard in his club debut.

Well, Sydney’s finals run is finally going to come to an end, as they now sit 3 games out of the eight with 6 rounds remaining. Jake Lloyd kept his owners happy with a 34 touch game that yielded 115 points, while elsewhere, Josh Kennedy (108) and George Hewett (104) kept their impressive campaigns going and will be a chance to win the BnF. Dane Rampe used his 14 touches extremely well to post 94, while a point below him were both Rowbottom and Mills. Zak Jones scored 90 and will be a breakout contender for next season, while a nervous wait is on the way for Dawson after a high bump on Dow.

Question from the game: How many more wins can Carlton put together in 2019?

Supercoach query: Will people be considering any of the above mentioned breakout contenders next season at this early, early stage?

Hawthorn vs Fremantle

Hawthorn strung together 2 wins in a row for the first time this season down in Tassie on Saturday afternoon. Ricky Henderson was the top scorer for them, finishing up with 25 touches and 11 marks while going at 80% for a score of 126. The really pleasing sign on the day though was the emergence of Mitch Lewis (100) up forward, who had the best game of his short career with 3 majors and 16 touches. Joining him in the three goal club was Luke Bruest, who finished a point under 100, while the others above triple figures were Worpel (109), Burgoyne (111) and McEvoy (102). Jaeger O’Meara did a bit of everything with 23 touches and 6 tackles for his 93, while all of Hardwick, Smith and Wingard scored 88. The long awaited return of Grant Birchall was a success, with the champion Hawk seemingly not missing a beat in his return, racking up 21 touches and 8 marks for 87 points. Rookie Hanrahan (62) kicked 2 goals and will be unlucky to be omitted, especially from a winning side.

4 losses in a row now for the Dockers and finals is looking like it’ll have to wait another year. Skipper Fyfe was probably the best player on the ground even in a losing effort, as he dominated the contest with 24 touches, 8 tackles and 3 goals to score 154. The only other Docker above 100 was the hard running Brad Hill, who pulled in 37 touches and 105 points, while from there on scores dip away. Rory Lobb (94) was dangerous in the ruck and up forward, while 8 players scored in the 80’s, including popular picks in Walters, Mundy and Ryan.

Question from the game: Will Burgoyne go again in 2020?

Supercoach query: Should people target Birchall instead of a rookie in this late stage of the season?

Essendon vs North Melbourne

A very late Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti goal sealed the win for the Bombers who finished the round sitting in 8th position. The man mentioned above also led the scoring for the Bombers on the day, due to his late-minute heroics, as well as the other 3 goals he booted and his 19 touches, he finished on 135 points. Conor McKenna was dashing off half-back all day with 25 touches and a goal to finish on 113, while fellow dasher Saad (109) and reliable backman Gleeson (111) also scored well. Across the middle Zach Merrett had 34 touches but was handball happy (23), while he also had 6 tackles to help him register 109 Supercoach points. Up forward Stringer (85) and Brown (72) kicked 5 goals between them, while bench cover in Dylan Clarke (78) and Zac Clarke (88) returned solid scores. The only issue on the night for the Bombers was a shoulder injury to star backman Hurley.

An unlucky loss for North Melbourne after they produced a very good last quarter that was ever so close to resulting in a win. Some massive scores from them on the day came from 3 of their most important players: Brown (143), Tarrant (160) and Goldstein (132). Starting with Brown, he had one of his better games of the year with 18 touches, 12 marks and 6 goals, while pulling down a decent speccy in the third term. Tarrant was a rock down back all day, hauling in 11 marks and 22 touches while going at 95% DE, while ruckman Goldstein had 19 touches (15 contested) and 32 hitouts in a display that will add some value to him if trade talks were to happen. Elsewhere for North Zurhaar (103) kicked 3 goals, while Thomas (76) kicked 2, while disappointing scores came from Ziebell (57) and Cunnington (54), with the Cunnington receiving the tag from Clarke. McDonald’s season is finished with a broken leg, while second gamer Taylor (9) couldn’t get near the ball.

Question from the game: Is Goldstein worth trading considering he is a top 3 ruck in the competition?

Supercoach query: Anyone for Tarrant? Averaging 103 from the last 5 rounds.

Gold Coast vs Adelaide

Ugly times for the Gold Coast Suns on Saturday night, who went down by 95 points. Supercoach wise it was also fairly bleak for them, with only Jarrod Witts (106) scoring over three figures. No one even scored in the nineties, except Pearce Hanley (89) and Jarrod Harbrow (86) were close. Overall, only 4/22 Suns players were able to score 80 (Miles on 80) or above. Sexton kicked 3 goals while Day kicked 2 and MacPherson (79) kept his stocks rising and will be a popular pick next year after another solid game of 18 touches, 9 tackles and a goal.

Even with such a massive win Adelaide didn’t have any real Supercoach scoring standouts, instead having an incredibly even spread. Rory Atkins top scored with 126, courtesy of his 35 touch (28 kick) game, while Wayne Milera (114) was fantastic all night with 27 touches at 85% and a goal. Rory Sloane was a point behind Milera for his 26 touch game, while other scores in triple figures went to Brad Crouch (103), Jake Kelly (107), Hugh Greenwood (102) and Eddie Betts (100). Furthermore the Crows still had 6 players score in the 90’s, with M.Crouch/Walker/Smith all scoring 98, Jenkins on 96 and backline pair Brown and Laird scoring 92 and 91 respectively. Overall 21/22 players scored 65 or above, with only David Mackay (58) not reaching that score. Does anyone know when the last occurrence of all players scoring above 50 was? Don’t think it would happen all too often! The multiple goal kickers on the night were Betts with 6, Jenkins with 4, Walker and club debutant Stengle (69) with 3 and Murphy with 2.

Question from the game: Was last week’s loss in the showdown the kick that Adelaide need?

Supercoach query: One for Thursday, which Crouch brother was robbed harder between their Supercoach score and SyntheticCoach score?

Geelong vs St Kilda

Geelong left their home fortress with another win on Saturday night, taking care of business by 27 points. Patrick Dangerfield led the charge with 32 touches (23 contested), 7 tackles, 9 clearances and a goal to lead all scorers on the ground with 163 points. Fellow midfielder Duncan (116) had a disposal more than Danger, but was lower in other areas, while Gary Ablett overcame a hip niggle to kick 2 final term goals on his way to 104 points. In the 90’s were Selwood on 99, Ratugolea on 98, while tags couldn’t stop Stewart (90) or Kelly (97) scoring well. Ratugolea, Guthrie and Ablett scored 2 goals each, while those hoping Tom Hawkins was going to be a keeper will be disappointed after he only kicked 1 goal and returned 54 points.

For the Saints it’s now 2-9 since their hot start to the year, and pressure will be mounting for a new coach if things don’t take a sharp turn. Luke Dunstan topped scored for them with 132 points to push his average to 95 on the season, while the next best were lookalikes, Steele and Hunter Clark, on 120 each. Rowan Marshall (116) will probably lose forward status next year, and at this stage will probably have coaches asking whether or not the Gawn and Grundy era is coming to a close. Shane Savage (112) also scored in triple figures due to his 27 touch game, while just below the 100 mark were Billings (97) and Gresham/Ross (98). Josh Bruce kept his goal kicking form going with 3 goals, while youngster Long kicked 2 himself.

Question from the game: Are the Cats all but guaranteed the minor premiership?

Supercoach query: Would Supercoach introduce a ruck/mid DPP status for ruckman who pick up say, 20 touches a week? Eg Grundy, Marshall, Goldstein etc

Richmond vs GWS

A bitterly cold Melbourne day was made bitterly worse for the Giants, both due to the 27 point loss and the injury to star player Stephen Coniglio (0) early in the contest (edit: season ending, cartilage damage). The better Supercoach news from the game included the welcome return of premium defender Whitfield (101), who, despite a month out of the game, looked as good as ever with 33 touches across halfback. Toby Greene top scored for them on the day with 138, courtesy of his 34 touch, 6 tackle, 2 goal game, while the next best was one of this seasons biggest Supercoach improvers, Tim Taranto (111), who had 36 touches himself. Nick Haynes was as courageous as ever for his 104, while Perryman (101) scored his second hundred of the season. Up forward Jeremy Cameron (84) kicked 3 goals, as did debutant Ian Hill (60). Supercoach premium Williams scored 99, while Brent Daniels scored 97.

A big win for the Tigers who now sit a game out from the top 4 and regained one of their absolute stars in Jack Riewoldt. While he didn’t do a hell of a lot on the day (1 goal, 10 touches), the forward line seemingly worked better when they had their mainstay back after a long layoff. Seven Tigers scored over 100, with Brandon Ellis leading the way on 119, courtesy of his 29 touch game. Next best was Shai Bolton, who had 29 touches himself and a goal for his 112, while a point below him was skipper Cotchin, who had 20 touches and 9 tackles. The other players in triple figures were Houli/Prestia (104), Lynch (103) and Vlastuin (100), while reliable players in Lambert (98) and Grimes (90) weren’t far off. Jason Castagna (93) kicked 2 goals, while Martin (62) was followed by Lloyd all day.

Question from the game: Will Richmond make top 4?

Supercoach query: Does Coniglios injury mean Hately will have a run until the end of the season?

Western Bulldogs vs Melbourne

A tight Sunday afternoon fixture came down to the last quarter where the Doggies ran away with the win. Josh Dunkley was the absolute star, finishing the day with ridiculous numbers that wont be replicated any time soon. 39 touches, 6 marks, 15 tackles, 24 contested possessions, 9 clearances, 2 goals and 202 Supercoach points, simply crazy. Lachie Hunter wasn’t bad himself, finishing his day with a nice banana goal to go along with 37 touches, 10 marks and 156 points, while Taylor Duryea used his 31 touches at 90% to score 143. The ever consistent Jack Macrae (120) was the other Dog over 100, while Lloyd, Schache, Suckling and Bontempelli were all in the 90’s, while it’s worth noting Bont had an ankle issue throughout the day. Scores dip from there, while Toby McLean’s day ended early with a hamstring injury.

A gallant effort from the Demons but they couldn’t produce a win. For the first time in what feels like a long time Max Gawn (117) didn’t lead their scoring on the day (barring his injury game), with instead Jack Viney (118) coming out on top. The Melbourne skipper had 30 touches (13 contested), 7 tackles and 6 clearances on the day, while James Harmes (107) continued his impressive season with a 22 touch, 6 tackle game. Christian Petracca played well for his 105, while up forward Harrison Petty (93) covered Tom McDonald’s role fairly well with a 3 goal game. Elsewhere Salem and Frost both scored in the 90’s, while second gamer Kyle Dunkley (41) didn’t exactly replicate his brother, finishing with only 5 touches, although his goal was one to remember.

Question from the game: Is Dunkley becoming the Dogs best player?

Supercoach query: Can Harmes push his average to 110+ next season?

Brisbane vs Port Adelaide

The young Lion cubs finished round 17 with a crushing 48 point win to move into 3rd place on the ladder. Jarryd Lyons was the star on the day Supercoach wise, finishing with 36 touches, 9 tackles and a goal for his 139 points. Mitch Robinson was next best on 127, two points above the 4-goal Charlie Cameron. Dayne Zorko (122) was fantastic across the ground all day, finishing with 24 touches (21 kicks) and 3 goals, while fellow mid Neale copped plenty of attention yet still managed 118 from 24 touches (17 contested), 10 clearances and 7 tackles. Other good scores came from McCarthy (104), Berry (100) and back flank pair, Rich (88) and Witherden (89).

For Port it was a bad loss after such a good win the week before. Darcy Byrne-Jones is a name I feel I’ve written a lot over the past month or so, and once again he gets a mention due to top scoring for the Power on 130 points, while Travis Boak (122) returned in very good form to finish with 32 touches (18 contested). The Gray guys in Sam and Robbie, both performed well, with Sam kicking 2 goals in his 19 touches for 102, while Robbie kicked 1 and had 32 touches for his 107. Ollie Wines (106) had a stellar game but butchered the ball a little too much, finishing with 32 touches that went at only 43%, although he also had 8 tackles, the most of anyone on his team. Scores drop from there, with only Lycett and Hartlett (both 86) being above 85, while the news looks bad for Ryan Burton, who despite having no chance of catching him, hurt his hamstring trying to pressure Charlie Cameron (although Cameron did miss the shot, a small silver lining).

Question from the game: Are Birsbane moving into premiership favouritism, or is there still plenty to prove?

Supercoach query: Will Wines ever reach the Supercoach heights he promises?

  1. Excellent as ever Dane. Thanks. Will ponder a few of those excellent questions you’ve posed.

  2. Great work as usual, Dane. I’ll look into the Crouches for you. 😉

Also, just on the MID/RUC dpp question, from memory I think Mark Blicavs might have had that a few years ago, although in his case rucking was really his secondary position (this was before they banned third-man up).
