Collingwood vs Sydney

The Collingwood train keeps on rolling, with a hard fought win to start the round on Friday night. Brodie Grundy was once again the star of the game: 64 hitouts (many to advantage), 18 touches (14 contested) and 8 tackles were the leading causes of his massive 165 point night. Next best was Pendlebury, who had a typical Pendlebury game with 29 touches at a good DE, 9 tackles and goal to net himself 146. Chris Mayne kicked the sealer which probably upped his score to 124, but in saying that he was good all night with his 20 touches going at 90% DE. Elsewhere good scores went to Treloar (93), Brown (97) and Crisp (99). Sidebottom was extremely well held, managing only 13 touches and 54 points, but bad news on the injury front for Collingwood, with Daniel Wells (after a great first half that included 3 goals) going down with a left knee injury.

Sydney’s valiant effort ultimately fell short, but no blame could be put on the shoulders of Sam Reid. While I highly doubt anyone reading this review owns him, he did have a great game with 6 goals straight from 15 touches for a huge 151 Supercoach points. A more relevant Supercoach player in this game for the Swans was the Seagull himself, Jake Lloyd. The man who picks up hundreds for fun had another stellar game of 35 touches at 82% for 115, but he was outscored by midfield bull Luke Parker (135). Apart from those above mentioned, decent scores went to Rampe (104), Mills (100), Sinclair (93) and Allir (88). Franklin made a successful return from injury with 2 goals, but in further bad news for the Swans, the midfield duo of Hewett (concussion) and Kennedy (knee) may miss next week due to their respective injuries.

Question from the game: If you could look into one players mind who would it be? My choice would be Dane Rampe, he seems a real character of the game…

Supercoach query: If you don’t have Grundy have you conceded you won’t ever bring him in considering he’ll be around 650k for most of the year?

Hawthorn vs Port Adelaide

Once again the Hawks bounced back from a disappointing loss with a convincing win, making them even harder to read in season 2019. Jack Gunston did his best Sam Reid impression with 6 goals straight, 21 disposals and 9 marks for an individual season high 144. If the Hawks best and fairest was run today Ricky Henderson (111) would win it by a fair length, with the wingman once again racking up possessions over the weekend, 37 to be exact. Not much else from a Hawks perspective as scores were fairly spread, but owners of Worpel (85), Sicily (91) and Scully (88) would probably have been half-pleased with their scores. O’Meara (75) was good without being great, while Scrimshaw continued his bad run of injuries with a new left knee complaint that ended his day early.

Port had many contributors in this game but were ultimately overrun by Hawthorn. Robbie Gray (89) made a great return from injury with a goal and 27 possessions, but did have an eye issue throughout the game. Byrne-Jones reached triple figures (115) due to his 28 touch, 6 tackle game, as did Xavier Duursma (108), who picked up 22 touches plus a goal. The only trade I did this week to make up a playing 22 was bringing in Matthew Broadbent and I was stoked with his game, 28 touches at 71%, which landed me with a score of 99. While he will probably only feature on my field throughout the byes, I’m tossing up whether to keep him as bench cover throughout the season due to his high job security and potential scoring output. Karl Amon snagged a goal amongst his 20 touches, while also laying 9 tackles to reach 95, the same score as Tom Jonas. Dan Houston scored 98, while first gamer Ladhams (66) had a pretty decent debut with 13 touches and a goal. Boak (77) and Rockliff (72) were down on their expected output, but excuse Rocky who finished his day early with a hamstring injury.

Question from the game: Is Ricky Henderson on his way to an All-Aus selection?

Supercoach query: Is Robbie Gray coming back onto people’s rader?

Western Bulldogs vs North Melbourne

North Melbourne sent off Brad Scott with a great win on Saturday afternoon. Todd Goldstein was the absolute star of the day with a monster game of 28 touches and 57 hitouts for 140 Supercoach points, while the next best was Higgins (108), highlighted by his 34 touches. Ben Cunnington (99) continued his great season with 29 touches (15 contested) and a goal, as did Jed Anderson (96) who used his 19 touches extremely well. Polec and Wood were both in the 90’s, but Jack Ziebell (50) couldn’t back up last weeks massive game. Wood, Brown and Larkey all kicked 3 goals up forward, while Robbie Tarrant was solid down back, not wasting any of his 13 touches for 80 points. Davis-Uniacke finished the game with a right shoulder complaint, so if you have him watch for the teams on Thursday night!

The Doggies mounted a pretty decent comeback in this game but didn’t take home the 4 points. Supercoaches rejoice, with Josh Dunkley now looking like he has a permanent midfield spot, hopefully meaning we see more scores like his 130 from the weekend. Caleb Daniel returned to the 100 club due to his 29 touch, 9 mark game, while uber-premium Jack Macrae didn’t set the world on fire but still scored 105. Other great scores from the day included Bontempelli on 118, Liberatore with 110, Johannisen on 104 and lastly Lloyd with 108. Youngster Bailey Smith looks like he’ll win about 5 BnF’s throughout his career, with another stellar game of 21 touches and a goal meaning 88 points to him. Tim English made his return to the side and kicked 2 goals but not much else, but it did mean Jackson Trengove’s (27) output was down from previous weeks. Lastly Hayden Crozier scored 87 mainly due to his exceptional ball use of 93%.

Question from the game: Now that the weeks all done, who’s going to take over the coaching job at North? (Permanently)

Supercoach query: Can Johannisen and Daniel continue their shared output throughout the season while both playing distributor in the backline?

West Coast vs Adelaide

The Eagles had a great comeback from 6 goals down over the weekend and it was led by the midfield pentagon (if that’s a thing) of Yeo, Gaff, Redden, Shuey and Sheed. Yeo picked up 15 tackles and 27 touches (16 contested) for his 115, while Redden had the exact same numbers (except contested touches) for his 113. Shuey also had double figure tackles, but had 33 touches and 11 clearances which meant he topped scored for the Eagles on the day with 136. Lastly, left-footed duo Gaff (33 touches, 9 marks) and Sheed (31 touches, 22 contested, 11 clearances, 1 goal) scored 106 and 112 respectively. Also on 112 was skipper Shannon Hurn, while out of form ruckman Nathan Vardy had his best score of the season with 92. Up forward Darling (104), Kennedy (80) and Cripps (87) all kicked 3 goals, while down back McGovern (83) played his usual intercept game despite being sore from a big hit in the second quarter.

Adelaide may look back on this game later in the season as the one that got away, but there were still some great Supercoach scores on the day. Rory Sloane (140) did everything he could to get his team over the line with 32 touches and 8 tackles, as did Cam Ellis-Yolmen, who had 10 tackles, had 30 touches and kicked a goal for his 134. The only other Crows in triple figures were Hugh Greenwood, who picked up 24 touches and 13 tackles to net his owners 112 points, and Jake Kelly (107) who I’m assuming no one owns. Reilly O’Brien continues to make money after his 93, while Laird (96) was in the same scoring range. Brodie Smith (52) was well down on his usual output and will be cheap in a few weeks time for anyone who has their eyes on him, while Brad Crouch had 39 touches, but only 80 points. Lastly Wayne Milera kicked 3 goals on return for a score of 84.

Question from the game: Where is Milera best suited? Proved he can kick goals but his disposal is too good to play him forward all game

Supercoach query: Following on from that, how will Smith and Laird be affected with Milera’s return?

Richmond vs Essendon

Richmond took the points on the big stage of Dreamtime at the G, in what was a wet and scrappy game. Bachar Houli (142) was everywhere all night and took home BOG honors after his 37 touch game, while Shane Edwards (125) wasn’t far behind after having 26 touches himself. Baker and Prestia both kicked highlight goals amongst their games of 25 and 26 touches and were extremely clean throughout the night with their disposal, resulting in scores of 105 and 112. Elsewhere Jack Higgins (100), Nick Vlastuin (108), Dustin Martin (93) and Noah Balta (83) scored well for their owners. Other notable mentions were Grimes for his 95, Stack not wasting any of his 16 touches in tough conditions for 67, and first gamer Coleman-Jones who played very well with 13 touches and 5 tackles. Unfortunately for the Tigers, star recruit Tom Lynch spent most of the last quarter on the bench nursing what seemed to be a leg injury.

Essendon gave this game some excitement with a spirited last quarter but left way too much way too late. Darcy Parish played extremely well with 31 touches (19 contested), 9 clearances and 5 tackles for a massive 137, while next best was Bellchambers (124) who muscled around Richmond’s first-gamer for 40 hitouts and 15 touches. Zach Merrett (104) continued to find plenty of it with 30 touches and 8 tackles, while Kyle Langford (98) kicked 3 goals and was at the center of everything with Essendon’s last quarter surge. Other decent scores went to McGrath (92) and Saad (85). Notable news out of the night for the Bombers were potential hamstring injuries to Stringer and Shiel.

Question from the game: Were the deliberate out of bounds free kicks to touchy for such a wet weather game?

Supercoach query: What happened to Michael Hurley’s Supercoach game? Was an uber-premium just 2 years ago.

Geelong vs Gold Coast

9-1 for Geelong and a top 4 finish almost looks secure for them. Tim Kelly would surely have to be in All-Aus calculations after another stunning week of 35 touches and 140 Supercoach points, while Mitch Duncan (127) is demanding attention after another 3 goal, 27 touch performance. A duo of Tom’s in Hawkins (122) and Atkins (115) also cracked into triple figures: Atkins mainly due to 11 tackles, Hawkins due to 4 goals. Guthrie and Dahlhaus both scored 94, a point more than Ablett on 93. Elsewhere notable scores went to Parfitt (97), Clark (85), Stewart (88), Selwood (89) and Blicavs (90). Second gamer Darcy Fort didn’t play as well as his first game but will probably hold his spot after another solid display.

Gold Coast were gallant in this game and were looking to steal a win for about 3 quarters of it, but ultimately were overrun by Geelong’s experience. Witts and MacPherson led the scoring for the Suns with twin 109’s, with Swallow next best on 107. Recruit Miles played a solid game with 23 touches (12 contested), 5 tackles and all at 87% DE for 104, while Holman had more tackles (14) than touches (12) for his 91. On the same score as Holman was Jack Martin, who continually rises his stock as an upcoming free agent after his 20 touch, 8 tackle game. My favorite Brayden Fiorini was solid without being a standout for his 97, while Weller (87) and Murdoch (88) also performed well. Ben Answerth played through ankle pain but ultimately succumbed to it at 3QT, while second gamer King doesn’t seem to have the scoring potential as of yet to be relevant in Supercoach.

Question from the game: Is THIS the week Gary gets his week off?

Supercoach query: Does anyone actually own any Gold Coast players?

GWS vs Melbourne

The Giants broke their MCG hoodoo on Sunday afternoon and move to 7-3 on the season. Josh Kelly was the star of the game, he picked up 31 touches, laid 10 tackles and kicked a goal for his 148 points, while not far behind was Tim Taranto on 132. The only other Giants to crack 100 were the 29 touch, 2 goal Whitfield (115) and the 18 touch, 5 goal Himmelberg (130). From there on, the Giants still had plenty of players with decent scores. Jeremy Cameron kicked 3 goals and had 15 touches for his 96, while young Perryman backed up his 100 from last week 98. Greene (84), Shaw (85), Taylor (92) and Hopper and Haynes (both 91) were other scores worth a mention. Stephen Coniglio once again underperformed but that may have been due to his corky in the 2nd quarter, while Shane Mumford (61) couldn’t keep up with Gawn, giving away 7 free kicks.

For Melbourne it was once again Gawn who led them in almost every major statistical category and returned 149 for his owners. 25 touches (17 kicks), 8 marks, 13 contested touches and 6 clearances were all team highs (and obviously hitouts) as he tried his hardest to get the Dees an unlikely win. The only other Melbourne player over 100 was everyone’s favorite rookie Marty Hore who had 18 touches (at 83% DE), 4 marks and 3 tackles for a seemingly inflated 115, but hey with all the carnage this week had, we’ll take it! Harmes (99) and Petracca (81) were the only others over 80 on what was a pretty bad day for the Demons. Only other player I think is worth mentioning is Oscar Baker, who is now on the bubble and looking tempting after his 2 goal, 16 touch game.

Question from the game: With Melbourne’s finals hopes essentially almost over, what do Dees supporters want to see from here on in?

Supercoach query: Should we bench anyone who Matt De Boer plays on? His latest victim was Oliver, who he kept to 53 points.

Carlton vs St Kilda

St Kilda get another win on the board in season 2019 after a hard fought Sunday afternoon victory. Luke Dunstan (122) topped scored for the Saints for his 20 touch, 1 goal game, but Jade Gresham was the star on the day. The Saints young gun had 29 constructive disposals, which included 12 contested touches and 6 clearances for his score of 114 and is starting repay the faith to anyone that held him. Acres also had 20 touches for his 102, while Jack Steele was in at the coalface most of the day with 10 tackles and 28 touches meaning he fell 1 point short of triple figures, the same as Tim Membrey. Seb Ross put together an 86, while underwhelming scores came from popular forward line picks Billings (73) and Marshall (76). Anyone who had to field Parker this week shouldn’t be too disappointed, he kicked 2 goals and finished on a respectable 75, but the same can’t be said for second gamer Young, who had just 5 touches and 17 Supercoach points. Any owners of Long or Dunstan keep an eye on the news as both were reported throughout the game.

A respectable showing from Carlton after last weeks dismantling, but many were hoping for a win after such a sour week. Cripps returned to his best with 28 touches (18 contested) and 116 points, while the only other Blue in triple figures was Ed Curnow on 102. Walsh (93), Casboult (94), Newman (90) and Petrevski-Seton (92) were all in the 90’s but from there scores really drop off for Carlton. Gibbons kicked 2 and scored 60 for anyone who still has him, but apart from that the only other news I have is that McGovern may miss a few weeks with an ankle injury.

Question from the game: Where does Carlton’s next win come from?

Supercoach query: Not that they are Supercoach relevant but comparing the games of Thomas and Casboult (stats wise), a 31 point difference seems excessive?

Fremantle vs Brisbane

Fremantle finished the round in great fashion with an after the siren behind to Michael Walters snatching them a win. Luke Ryan topped scored for them on the day with his 137 game coming courtesy of 32 touches and 81% DE. Brad Hill and Rory Lobb both scored 127, a point more than Nathan Fyfe (126). The Freo skipper had 26 touches (17 contested), 7 tackles and a goal on the day to lead his side to a great home victory. Nathan Wilson (121) and Walters (110) played starring roles in the win, as did the evergreen David Mundy (92). Scores for Freo drop from there but first-gamer Brett Bewley (49) didn’t do much wrong with his 11 touches and looks to have some scoring potential is he can hold his spot.

An unlucky loss for Brisbane but still at 6-4 and games against Hawthorn (Gabba) and Carlton (MCG) coming up before their bye, no one should be at panic stations over finals just yet. Supercoach wise, Harris Andrews was massive with 15 touches and 10 marks making him the leading scorer for the Lions on 118. A point behind was the rejuvenated Zorko, who after I’d almost written off has proven me wrong with 4 consecutive tons. Jarryd Lyons continued his hot streak, with his 18 touches and 7 tackles netting him 109 points, as did Daniel Rich, who picked up exactly 100 from his 22 touch game. McCluggage had 97 but after that no one scored above 80 for Brisbane, including Lachie Neale (79). Mitch Hinge, who many of us fielded this week repaid us with a 73, while up forward Charlie Cameron kicked 3 goals and if Supercoach was scored on highlight plays, he’d be up there as one of the most picked players. Injury news included hip and shoulder issues to big men Hipwood and McInerney.

Question from the game: Didn’t really have much here so I’ll look at a different sport, who’s winning the NBA finals and in how many games?

Supercoach query: Who would be the highest scorers if Supercoach was based on highlight plays?

  1. I dont have Grundy..it was always the plant to get him after his bye..Goldy doing a great job, and with ROB on bench, I have two rucks each round unless sauce comes back. Goldy to Grundy for the run home wont be that expensive, and lots of cash for an upgrade via ROB.

    1. Same idea, rd14 trade out ROB via Bines then Goldy to Grundy.

Dane, great review, I own Collins, Corbett & Burgess. Plan to keep the first 2 purely as benchcover as I believe their JS is solid. Burgess for loopholing.

  2. Surely Golden State will do it again. Would like to see it go to 6 but reckon it’ll probably be 5.

    1. I’m in Ontario as well – I want the Raps to win but they’ll need to get great bench play for more than 1-2 games.
