Ruck Strategy 2012

Written by Motts on January 21 2012

What’s your approach going to be to the tall timber this year? (apologies for the shitty formatting)

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

(Our thanks to Jester for suggesting this poll)

  1. 2 Guns, 2 Rookies (well maybe 3, as Rowe may slip into the fwd line bench and make his way back to ruck at some stage).

  2. I like the look of Sandi, HMac and two rookies at this stage. Before injury he was one of the leading ruck men and like Adcock last year I think he can excel again. I understand he will share with Goldy but Cox and NicNat both scored well last year, so it can be done.
Also, I like HMac’s draw over the first 10 rounds with some juicy opposition: GWS, GCS, Dogs, Port, Lions and he may even do well against the Hawks ruck division. Some good opportunity to shine in these games.

  3. For me, it is a little wait-and-see, but at the moment, Giles and the Big-O are locked in.

One of Sandilands or Mumford will definitely be joining them (I believe that you have to have at least one gun in there), but I’m constantly changing as to the last player in my ruck strategy.

    I can either:
    (a) Go with the second premium of Sandy and Mummy (or another, such as Leuenberger or Goldstein),
    (b) Select mid-pricer like McIntosh (who I’m yet to be convinced will get decent ruck time) or Kreuzer (who it has been said will be a key forward more often that not this year, which I believe will adversely affect his scoring) or,
    (c) Risk Giles starting and having another cheapie on the bench. I very much doubt I will make up my mind on this one until the final 24 hours pre-lockout, but as of right this minute I am leaning slightly towards the Sandy and Mummy combo

  4. I pretty much have my rucks sorted. I am really liking the combination of Mummy and Naitanui, although the thought of McEvoy has crossed my mind. But a Mummy/NicNat combo, mixed with Giles and the Big O is almost a certainty for me!

  5. My rucks currently stand at: Sandi – Nic Nat – Giles – Stephensen.
Naianui is set for massive things in 2012 IMO, and I’m keen to have a POD in the ruck department…

  6. My rucks will be 2 premiums, 2 rookies. Premiums will be ruckmen who are the standout No. 1 ruck in their team. The teams that adopted this strategy last year gave their ruckmen more opportunity to score points, rather than teams that shared the workload between 2 or more ruckmen.

Teams im avoiding for ruckmen – WC, North, Ess, Carlton,

Goldstein was a standout last year as he was the only ruck for North whilst HMac was out. Petrie pinch hit every now and then, but Goldy was able to rack up the points. With HMac back, supercoach points are now going to be shared between the two. The emergence of Nic Nat has also made me put a line through Cox as I think the workload will start to shift as Cox gets older. Kreuzer is in the same situation. Fantastic player, but not able to get access to all the supercoach points available to a full-time ruckman. Dodging the bombers as their strategies often involved 3 ruckmen last year.

Teams im considering – Freo, Sydney, Brisbane

Sandi, Mummy and Leuey are the number 1 ruckmen for their respective clubs and generally take on the majority, if not all of the workload each game. Sandi is a gun, we all know how good he is. Mummy showed last year how he can dominate a game and Sydney generally have a lot of stoppages, giving him a lot of opportunities for points. Seaby didnt get a look in at the end of last year which further enhances mummy’s status at the club. Leuey is getting more consideration given the move of clark to melbourne. I think with redden, rockliff and black at his feet, he will also get good support.

Set and forget strategy has worked for me in the past so Im sticking with it. Dont fix something that aint broken.

  7. Hmm, normally I go with a 2 prems / 2 rookies, but this year I like:

    1 Prem – Sandilands
1 Mid-price – Minson, he should be number 1 ruck every game this season for WB.
2 Rookies – Giles and Stephenson.

  8. Any word on some other talent? There are more than 8 ruckmen available. Or are we all just reading the papers and copying each other?

  9. Everyone’s talking Giles, Stephenson, Rowe or even Derickx but haven’t seen too many people talking up Jarrod Witts.

This might get him a bit more interest – http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/tabid/5586/default.aspx?newsid=128413

I had to have another shower after going to the Pies website but def worth a look. 5 nods from team-mates bodes pretty well and for those who have never heard of him, he’s 209cm and 113 kegs. 211 MK2 in the making.

  10. So has the emergence of Redden skewed peoples view on this most crucial of subjects? Still 2/2 for me McEvoy/Sauce Giles/Redden
