  1. Solid team TDA. Don’t particularly like the Ferguson and Dwarshius selections and my recommendation would be U Khawaja and B Laughlin which would need to be funded by a slight downgrade of 1 of Hughes/Weatherald/Sams.

U Khawaja has averaged 102.88 from his past 8 matches (BBL05 to BBL08) and 75.06 from 18 matches since BBL02.

B Laughlin recorded his lowest avg last season and the only time below 45 . Is now at the Heat who have a double 1st up and his addition should be beneficial due to their poor bowling line up.

  2. Thanks Adam and I will seriously think about taking your advice on board as your advice before the BBL last year helped me greatly to finish as high as I did in the overall rankings of 131

  3. Current lineup:

    Bat: U Khawaja, C Lynn, S Marsh, J Vince, T Banton, (M Harris, J Fraser-McGurk)

    WK: J Philippe, (A Carey)

    Bowl: T Curran (C), Q Ahmed, A Agar, C Morris, B Laughlin, (J Paris, C Green)

    Remaining salary: $1900

Most of the team is set bar S Marsh and the majority of the bench spots (excluding M Harris).

  4. Never played BBL, but the advice offered on this site for SC has been second-to-none. Clearly, this is my first team attempt (ever). Appreciate any commentary in advance; thanks.

BAT: Curran (C), Khawaja, Cutting, Lynn, Banton (Harris, Sutherland)

    WKT: Philippe (Bancroft)

BWL: Sams, Agar, Morris, Laughlin, Henriques (Paris, Green)

    1. Very Solid Mike!

You have got the right idea with plenty of DGW players for Round 1 and Round 3.

I reckon Carey is a better option as your W/K for another 17k over Bancroft having the Bye Round 1 so is the perfect Captain loophole when you put Phillippe on the bench if you want to take your VC score after your VC’s first game of their DGW.

      1. Cheers TDA!

I see what you’re saying about Bancroft in the WKT. Very similar to how you would use a non-playing rookie in the Ruck on SC. It does bring up a dilemma around which player to downgrade, and then also to whom?

In the above set-up I have $500 Bank, meaning I’d need to downgrade to a Batsman or Bowler for $156.1k or less… any suggestions? I’ve got some flexibility due to plenty of DPP.

        Thanks in advance 🙂

        1. That is exactly right Mike. I am hearing in some BBL SC big chat rooms that Paris @81k is unlikely to play. So I would move him on structure wise for a Fraser McGurk 42k for now and just slot in another cheap bench player if he is not named at the start of the Tournament.

  5. Current Side: 25k left
BAT: Khawaja, Lynn, Sams, Banton, Hughes, (Harris), (Davies)
    WK: Philippe, (Peirson)
BOWL: Curran (C), Abbott, J Richardson, Agar, Henriques, (Green), (Sutherland)
    Thoughts on the side lads?
Other side I’m tossing up with:
BAT: Khawaja, Sams, Bryant, Banton, Hughes, (Harris), (Davies)
    WK: Philippe, (Peirson)
BOWL: Short, Curran (C), J Richardson, Agar, Henriques, (Green), (Sutherland)
I’m unsure whether to start D Short or not, he could be really handy in non-DGW’s, especially when not many people are not starting him. Could get me a leg up on the rest of the pack. Also I don’t mind Chris Jordan as a decent pick but I’m a bit scared to pick him.

Would you be able to answer my questions? And which side is best and why?
    Cheers,
    Placey

    1. Wouldn’t bother about starting D Short due to his high price and lack of doubles and if you are after a Hurricane I recommend Q Ahmed. Averaged 83.7 last season (from 3 games) but is priced at an avg of 51 thus representing great value and his economical bowling and wicket taking bodes well for his consistency.

Really like C Jordan as a selection but the price is very offputting. Quite perplexed that they priced him at his average across all of his BBL tenures rather than following the precedence of pricing players at their avg as Jordan played in the BBL last season and should be priced $50,000 below his current price.

Prefer J Vince over D Hughes if you have sufficient cash and the rest of the side is solid. Just be wary that it currently seems unlikely that 3 basement rookies will be selected but this can be alleviated by dropping J Richardson for Q Ahmed and potentially S Abott/D Sams.

What are your thoughts on the following picks?
J Richardson, Z Khan, Chris Green, Cutting, NCN

        1. J Richardson-Solid selection but prefer his teammate C Jordan.

Z Khan- Overpriced and hard to fathom how they determined his starting figure. Wish they had cheap internationals as has been the case over previous years but alas they too few and far between. Typically the international spinners fare well in the BBL and the low economy rates and potential for wickets are enticing. Prefer B Laughlin from the Heat in regards to Brisbane bowlers but Z Khan is a close 2nd.

C Green- Great POD and with the departure of F Ahmed will become the Thunder’s main spinner. Honed his craft around various T20 tournaments since the previous BBL and recently signed the largest contract (in terms of years) in BBL history. Economical which is a positive in conjunction to pinch hit with the bat and at an affordable price which is enticing.

NCN- Interesting POD but has moved to a stronger batting line-up which could decrease his batting chances. In the 3 seasons prior to BBL08 he averaged 79.8, 83 and 82.

    2. I think the second side is of a higher quality mate, Short should start well and he could be a better pick than Lynn & Abott. If you can get Chris Jordan in , he has a great T20 record especially in Australia and is probably even more suited than some of the DGW players like Abott for instance. Even some of the Scorchers pace bowlers like Hardie could be a great cog in the works this year especially since they’re such a qualified and all round side! Even get Hales in there somewhere, will be back to his bustling best shortly!

      3

      1. Yeah thanks mate.
So you think Short will be good to start. Would also be good as not too many people are selecting him this year and would be very handy for non-DGW’s and I can use him as a captaincy option. And you rate Chris Jordan as a nice option too? Do you like Jhye Richardson as a POD and a nice option for his DGW too?

  6. Adam and Joseph,
What are your thoughts on Finchy as a nice POD.
Not many sides have him and I believe he is a bargin imo.

    1. Great selection. Prefer him over D Short due to the cash saved which can be utilised on another upgrade. I’m trying to find a structure I like that fits in a Renegades batsmen (A Finch or S Marsh).

      In the past 2 seasons Finch has averaged below 45 (BBL07= 34.5 and BBL08= 41.4) in comparison to 4/5 seasons averaging 70+ between BBL02 and BBL06 (73.8, 72.7, 28.7, 83 and 84.4)

    1. Great lineup and very hard to fault. An option could be C Jordan to U Khawaja but would need to be funded by a move such as S Abbott to B Cutting/D Sams etc or M Henriques/B Stanlake to ?.

U Khawaja has averaged 102.88 from his past 8 matches (BBL05 to BBL08) and 75.06 from 18 matches since BBL02.

Love the Carey starting selection as the early fixture and DPP allows them to be switched around depending on the doubles as well covering for each other’s byes.

I’d be lying to say Sams/Cutting & Uzi all haven’t been in my side to this point, all great options!

  8. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Bank: $3,800 left
BAT: Short, Khawaja, Cutting, Jewell, Peirson, (Harris), (Fraser-McGurk)
    WK: Carey, (Philippe)
BOWL: Curran, Sams, Q Ahmad, Green, Henriques, (Green), (Sutherland)

Rookies are probably subject to R1 selection
I’ll use Carey as my loophole round 1, probably looping Khawaja into Curran

    1. TJ I think Short is too expensive to start but not the worst pick as he can go large.

I think with the Hurricanes signing David Miller 198k will probably come in at 3 that Jewell is a very risky pick as he will come in down the order and does not have the DGW Round 1.

Banton and Bryant at 125k and 129k with heat having the Round 1 DGW are obvious replacements for Jewell or even the Thunder W/K Batsman Gilkes.

I think Ben Laughlin @107k playing for the heat is also a better starting option than Qais Ahmed.

Good Luck for BBL09 SC season!

    2. Would forego Short as it’s detrimental to the other aspects of your side.

      An option could be:
Out: D Short, B Cutting, J Peirson and W Sutherland
      In: B Laughlin (via M Henriques), T Banton, A Finch and J Vince/A Agar

Other than that, I like the remainder of your selections.

    1. If you want to use the majority of your remaining salary, you could grab M Henriques/etc to replace C Ferguson allowing you to acquire B Stanlake to replace O Davies/J Fraser-McGurk. Agree with TDA’s sentiment regarding your line-up.

  10. Very solid starting line up Sean.

Just beware that Morris who is very well priced might not play both games for the Thunder in Round 1 as his team in another tournament could be in the final on the night Thunder play their 1st game.
Morris then has a 17 hour flight to make it for the Thunders 2nd game 2 days later which will not be ideal preparation.

Good Luck Sean in your debut year!

    1. Usually utilised in the wicket-keeper position with the player selected operating as a loop for the captaincy duties exactly like AFL SC. But I wouldn’t be overly bothered in trying to set up a loophole as this can wait till the latter half of the season.

My preference is to relegate some of the core players from your side to the bench during their bye, rather than trading them thus allowing the player to be utilised as a loop in their bye and then switched back on in the following week with the pattern repeating with another player in his place in the following round.

  12. Tried to pick up a few things from the earlier comments.
    Bat: C Lynn, D Sams, A Agar, T Banton, D Hughes, C Jewell (Bench), W Sutherland (Bench)
    W/K: J Philippe, A Carey (Bench)
    Bowl: T Curran, C Jordan, C Green, R Meredith, B Laughlin, B Stanlake (Bench), N Ellis (Bench).
    Bank: $1,300

    1. Hey TDA,
Thoughts on which side you rate best? I’m tossing up between these two
Do you like the first one?
BAT: Khawaja, Lynn, Sams, Vince, Banton, (Harris), (Sutherland)
      WK: Philippe, (Peirson)
BOWL: Abbott, SOK, Z Khan, Jordan, Laughlin, (Cam Green), (Ellis)

Or do you like the second one?
BAT: Khawaja, Sams, Vince, Banton, Hughes, (Harris), (Sutherland)
      WK: Philippe, (Peirson)
BOWL: K Richardson(Good replacement for/Curran), Abbott, SOK, Z Khan, Laughlin, (Ellis), (Cam Green)

I’m really liking the SOK pick atm, good POD and very underrated as an option imo for the two Sixers DGW’s. Also I have decided to not start Curran for now and to start planning without him due to him likely playing in Mzansi Super League Final clashing with Sixers first game and him potentially only playing 1 or no games of his DGW.

It really is actually not a bad thing if he misses as it frees up more cash to strenghten the rest of side. Also thoughts on Vince over Hughes, Laughlin pick, and who to get from Jordan, Maxi, Cutting or J Richardson?

I could even start K Richardson over Curran (as in second team), as he would be a good POD(not many sides have him), a great captaincy option for the non-DGW’s, and just a great consistent scorer.
      Cheers,
      Placey

      1. Hey Placey

I prefer Team 1 with Lynn over Hughes and Jordan with the Scorchers having the Round 3 DGW over Richardson who is expensive for a player who does not have a DGW until Round 5.

I prefer Vince over Hughes due to the fact he scores at a better strike rate rather than an accumulater like Hughes.

Laughlin at his price of 108k and the all time BBL wicket taker with the Heat having the Round 1 DGW looks a must have bargain.

I prefer Jordan at 162k with the Scorchers Round 3 DGW as you want a few players in your starting line up that have the Round 3 DGW.

Kane Richardson is not worth starting just as a captaincy option for the Round 2 non DGW Round IMO. I would be looking at getting Richardson in at Round 4 ready for the Renegades Round 5 DGW.

Adam if you have any thoughts or anything to add do not hesitate to give Placey your thoughts as well , however , I know you have already given him advice earlier on in this thread.

  13. Also do you like the Patto pick (should be released from test squad), and the Steketee pick? Both are in good Sheffield Shield/Marsh Cup form. Could even start Steketee on field as last bowler to free up cash and potentially grab a Richardson, Short, Stoinis. Only downside to starting Steketee on field is his JS, wouldn’t be locked into that Heat side I would think, especially with that strong bowling attack.

    1. Great to see you are participating in this format.

An option could be to remove Cutting and Dwarshius and replace them with B Laughlin and T Banton (by switching Curran to the bowling line up). This will increasing your remaining salary from 97,000 to approximately 180,000.

Those funds can be utilised to upgrade your bench and stash upcoming double game players. For example Evans to B Stanlake, O Davies to M Harris and W Sutherland to P Salt/A Agar/etc.

      2

        1. Once you grasp the basics, it’s quite easy to play and far less difficult than AFL SC.

Little to no injuries to relevant players
          Less suspensions, rests, omissions, etc
          Less relevant players
Schedule centric which is beneficial for astute players to be able to efficiently and consistently capitalise
          Transparent scoring system

          In regards to the format:
          Target the top 4 batters
          Target the death/strike bowlers
Select batsmen with high strike rates
Select bowlers with low economy rates
          Select several/many all-rounders
Develop a solid bench to allow potential guns to be relegated to the bench during their byes rather than being traded
Avoid excessively targeting the DGW’s (1-3 per team is recommended and avoid selecting 5+ from a team)

  15. Great sensational analysis of SC BBL Adam.

If you don’t mind I would like to expand on your fantastic analysis and put an article together for Motts to put up on the site.

Adam only if time allows and you don’t mind could you please email Motts the top 5-10 batsman strike rates and 5-10 bowler low economy rates over the last year or so to help me compile a write up for Motts.

Adam you are the best stats man the site has had so it would be very much appreciated if you could help me on that front. It would be great if we can get some more BBL SC articles and input on the site.

We are in the process of putting together a thread of local and International players stats from the T10 and MSL League.

    1. If you head to ESPN Cricinfo, you can find those stats for all of the BBL seasons.

      Steps from the homepage:
      1. Select the series section (next to live scores, near the top left corner)

      2. Then select Archives.

      3. Select which season you are after (eg BBL08=2018/2019).

      4. Scroll down to the T20 section and select Big Bash and then series home.

      5. Select stats. This will provide you with strike rates, economy rates, most runs, most wickets, etc.

  16. Adam would love your thought on this first draft please

Bat: Khawaja, Lynn, Marsh, Vince, Morris ( Davis, Fraser-McGurk)
    Keeper: Philippe ( Carey)
Bowlers: Curran, Sams, Q.Ahmad, Green(thunder) Henriques (Sutherland, Green)

    1. Extremely hard to fault the onfield selections as I’ve heavily considered them all. Only concern is the bench and the likelihood that 1-2 will only play which will affect cash generation. M Harris for Davies and J Paris/B Stanlake for Sutherland is an option likely to be funded by a downgrade of A Carey or D Sams to J Doran or B Laughlin.

  17. Ideally will try to squeeze Lynsannity over Bryant but proving difficult without omitting either Curran/Abbott.

Curran, Khawaja, Bryant, Morris, Philippe (Harris, Green)
    Banton (Carey)
Abbott, Faulkner, Agar, Laughlin, Henriques (Stanlake, Ellis)

    Cash: $1,700
