SC Finals Wk1, 2013: Defenders

Written by MJ on September 3 2013

This will be the first of a new 4-part series being released this week in the lead-up to the inaugural SC Finals. Join the other 79 coaches already signed up for the SCT League with the code: 714272.

The In-forms:

Bryce Gibbs ($404,700; 3 Rd Ave: 103, 5 Rd Ave: 93) Smashed Port Adelaide last week to the tune of 139 points and was instrumental in the 1 point victory to secure a spot in the Finals for the Blues. Comes up against the Tigers on Sunday, whom he scored a 150 against in R1 and an 89 in R21. Gibbs has the highest 3 game average of any defender competing in Finals with 89, 81 and 139 in his last three games.

Brandon Ellis ($338,100; 94.33, 102.2) 35 disposals last week made the 20 year old the 2nd highest scoring SC defender of the round behind Gibbs with a massive 137. That’s his 5th score of 120+ this season and is priced very attractively due to the 5 games he’s played vest-effected, averaging 99.7 removing those games. The only knock on him is that he was tagged by Armfield in R21 against the Blues for a score of only 59. Will Mick employ the same strategy on him this week?

Andrew Mackie ($381,600; 93.33, 94) Has gone about business quite nicely in the run home, chalking up 7 90+ scores from 11 games. Scored 115 against the Dockers off 27 disposals in R14, which would instil a bit of confidence in those who select him against Ross Lyon’s men this week.

The Undervalued:

Grant Birchall ($403,800) The PCL injury he sustained in R13 came in Q1, reducing his score to just 40 that week. Removing the injury affected game, Birch actually averaged just shy of 96 points this year, whereas he is effectively priced at a 92 average. Scored 106 against the Swans last week. Can he repeat the performance?

Chris Yarran ($268,300) Averaged 62 for the year, but that doesn’t tell the full story. Starting as the sub 3 times and being subbed off twice means that his real average is much higher. He’s managed an average of 78 points in non-sub games this season, which admittedly isn’t much, but is quite a lot for the price you pay.

The Loose Change Menu:

Dylan Grimes ($189,300) Probably the cheapest defender who’s guaranteed game time, unless Lewis Roberts Thompson ($159,800) returns from long term injury.

Sam Colquhoun ($206,600) Has become more of a regular in the 2nd half of the year for Port. Banking a 93 point game in R22 may give him a chance of making the cut, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the sub after starting with the green vest twice from his 8 games this season.

Jared Rivers ($209,000) Played the last four games for the Cats after a knee injury set-back in R5 for scores of 40, 67, 68, 57.

  1. Ted Richards is only $287k. Stop me if I’m wrong but he’s scored 140 and 100 over the last two weeks. Plus he hasn’t had a vest all year……..

  2. My backs at the moment Burgoyne, Ellis and Grimes but after reading about Ellis getting tagged by Armfield might have to rethink. Shaw is tempting this week also but do you save a bit of money to spend in the midfield?

  3. Can I ask if your players go up in value do you then have more $ or is it 3.7 each week?….What I am really getting at is what are the strategy options?

If this is already covered in another post I’m happy to read that Cheers.

  4. Anyone else considering T.Richards, J.Rivers and D.Grimes? I think that money can be better spent in other positions. These guys are your effective ‘rookie’ selections. Might as well invest in guns from other positions given the lack of cheap players across all positions.

  5. Of the 11 players that you need to select, six seem to be staying in every version of my side and the other five change daily. Two of the guys who are in every version of my side are defenders. At the moment, I am running with:

    Rivers – Colquhoun – Grimes

It looks terrible, but it means that I look at the rest of my side and just have a lot more confidence that the premiums in those sections will perform compared with those on offer in defense.

Providing both don’t get injured (as they have a tendency to do) I think Rivers and Grimes should deliver 125 between them. It is unspectacular but at least I expect it. Most of the top rated defenders could also chuck out a 60 and that would annoy me no end.

Colquhoun is the interesting one. If he is selected, I’ll find him hard to ignore. He has been involved in the vest in three of his eight games, but has only missed one of the last seven weeks of footy. He can find the ball, having had 16 after starting as sub four weeks ago against the Crows, 18 against the Cats, 16 against the Dockers and then 20 in three quarters against the Blues (those last three are all top 8 sides).
