SC Finals Wk1, 2013: Rucks

Written by MJ on September 4 2013

Hope you all enjoyed the Defenders post released yesterday. Lets now turn our attention to the big men of the game.

The In-forms:

Shane Mumford ($380,300; 3 Rd Ave: 117.3, 5 Rd Ave: 115.2) What a revelation this man has been since R18, scoring 123, 113, 111, 102, 91 and 159! Is he back to the Mummy of old we last saw in 2011? His confidence will be sky high facing the Hawks again this week.

Zac Clarke ($482,200; 123.3, 104.0) Before being rested this week, did anyone notice Zac Clarke pump out consecutive scores of 120, 116 and 134 in the first 3 weeks of Finals? Probably not, but now you’re aware, you can put him on your radar. Scored 97 against Geelong back in R14.

Matthew Lobbe ($363,300; 103.3, 109.6) Owned by only 0.86% of players at the conclusion of the regular form of the game, Lobbe has averaged 116 in his last 4 matches and would represent outstanding value if he could deliver another big score against the Pies this week.

The Undervalued:

Aaron Sandilands ($266,400) Sandi’s season has been one to forget. Sitting out the first 14 rounds, 211 returned to play two games before being rested in R17 and subbed out in R21 with concussion and a cheekbone injury. Here’s an ugly stat for you: in the 9 games Sandilands has played a part in this season, he’s amassed a total of 7 kicks! Will still be a popular selection nonetheless, on pure potential to score massively when he’s on his game.

The Loose Change Menu:

Brodie Grundy ($271,200) Seems to have cemented the #1 ruck duties ahead of the more experienced Jolly and Hudson, and with good reason too. The kid is a gun and will be one of the elite ruckmen in the competition sooner rather than later. Good for a score in the 60-80 range.

  1. For me it has to be Sandilands.

He has had a horrible year, but he is a class ruckman.

Geelong continue to have significant issues in the ruck department and honestly have no way to combat him.

Finals are traditionally tighter, tougher contests with more stoppages and therefore more chances for 211 to assert his dominance.

It is also a good sign that he is cheaper than the option in “The Loose Change Menu”!

Pretty good record against the Cats too with 7/11 hundred plus scores including a 172 and a 140.

The level of Mummy’s attractiveness depends a lot on whether or not Bailey gets selected for me. If the Hawks just go in with Hale and Roughead then it becomes a tougher call on Mumford vs Sandilands, but I think Bailey will play.

  2. Yes, I like big Sandi as well. He seems great value and only needs to be able to get around the ground to the contests to amass a big score.

  4. Mumford for mine, at only 380k and the form of a 115 average behind him he is a bargain. Sandi is a risk vs reward scenario, and I’m opting not to take the risk.

  5. Agree with Jurn the Stern…

Sandi could be hit by a falling leaf and be a late out. only play half a game due to being the sub getting subbed or being the just not match fit.

If this was week one of regular season and I had emergencies i might take the risk but with only 11 players if one player goes down or has a bad game you have a lot fewer mates around him to pick up the slack
