SC Round 1 Lessons

Written by Big Sexy on March 30 2011

A few Lessons Learned from Round 1:

  1. JP Kennedy isn’t worth the SC Hype (yet)
  2. Midpricers don’t pay dividends (very few exceptions)
  3. There are plenty of good Rookies to choose from, and we haven’t seen the Suns yet.
  4. Big Cox is back to his very best
  5. Those trying to exploit the captaincy loophole with Gibbs/Judd and have Swan in their side should not have got sucked in…. you invested in Swan for a reason!
  6. Captaincy selection is crucial…. Anyone who picked Selwood was in serious trouble (obviously couldn’t predict that).
  7. Don’t ever get sucked in to picking the Tiges second-string rookies just because they are named.  i.e Relton Roberts, Andrew Browne!
  8. Goddard can score well, even if he has a bad game.
  9. People looking to offload premiums who didn’t score-well in round one… should re-think….. this is a marathon, not a sprint.
  10. Anyone who selected Everitt is a massive loser (that’s a specifically directed dig, they know who they are)
  11. What rookies you play on the field and name on the bench is crucial to final score (i.e. I had Lower on bench, Duigan on field, that’s 50 extra points)
  12. Some other stories I have heard include:
a.    People forgetting to select captain or vice captain
b.    People forgetting to name emergencies
c.    People selecting the wrong player (i.e the wrong Otten)
d.    People not looking at final teams to re-jig what they have and avoid doughnuts.

What did you learn?

  1. 4. Is Big Cox really gonna pumpout 160+ scores every week though?? If so then goodbye Jolly.

    6. Had both Selwood (not capt thank god!) and Foley so copped a estimated -100pts off my score. can happen to anyone and any player though…be warned.

    11. had buckley playing and Lower on the bench 🙁

    13. Without the first 3 warm-up rounds that Supercoach has had in previous years alot of mistakes were made regarding selections, captains etc. 2 of the 5 teams i played hadn’t named subs.

  2. Clark got KO’d with 6 minutes left in the game and came back on 3 minutes later, unlike Selwood. As for Eveitt his playing for a new club and of course it take time to fit in.

  3. just because you have big cox doesn’t mean you always get a good score…. 😉
Would be interesting to see a poll between 2 popular ruck combo’s
    Sandi cox
    Cox ryder

Might answer some key questions on the SCT community…

  4. A little story about b)

On Friday afternoon my mate was chatting to his Dad about going to the footy that night and his Dad told him that he’d just gotten into this Supercoach thing. So he walked him through his team, the stars, the underpriced, the rookies, his emergencies…HOLY SHIT I FORGOT TO NAME EMERGENCIES GIVE ME YOUR PHONE

  5. cock jokes aside. it would be interesting to see what people think are the best ruck combos. especially (as i understand it) ruckman are going to be getting bigger scores in supercoach this year because they’re less likely to be subbed off??

i have Sandi & Jolly probably should have got Cox instead of jolly though.

  6. I learnt that I am not as wise as I thought I was. I had in what I thought was a very good side for 2200 pts. (considering the likes of Selwood,Goodes,Franklin etc) and to learn that some bastard had 2600+ absolutely fills me with self loathing.

  7. Can never have enough Cox jokes…. I love the handy work from the boyz on Cox.

If Motts doesn’t wack up a poll on Cox, I’ll put one up tomoz.

  8. People picked the wrong Otten ? LOL – surely you jest – one is Otten and one is Ottens and they play in entirely different positions !! On a side note, Ottens actually did surprisingly well Round 1.

  9. Max Otten for Syd… and serious.

And on the Topic of Ottens…. I was very tempted leading into the season to take a punt given his price and the fact he’s probably the 3rd best ruck in the comp (when he’s fit)….. He played all pre-season and is petty handy, he’s just a little injury pron…. but now I have Petrie, and previous years I’ve nexer had ruck cover… I continue to give it serious thought…. I’ll watch him next week and see.

  10. agreed you’d have to be a bit of a berk to confuse to players with similar names who play for different teams!

On another note, my captain nathan ablett is sure to bring home a great score this week.

  11. Lesson 1. Don’t get sucked in to Bret Deledio before Rnd 10

Lesson 2. Don’t get sucked in to Adam Goodes before Rnd 5

Lesson 3. Go with your gut – Don’t get scared off by not having a clear captain choice – I had H Taylor, R O’keefe and C Judd who all made way so I could re-jig and fit Goddard in. Est loss of 350 points. You live and learn… Hopefully.

Lesson 4. Enjoy every moment of a quiet B Harvey game as you just know that every kick he doesn’t get will come back with interest next week. Would give him the Big C if he wasn’t playing Collingwood this week.

Lesson 5. Cotchin, Burgoyne, Krakouer and Priddis were very good inclusions.

  12. Ah – at least that makes more sense, but “whoops !” doesn’t even begin to cover it … then again, I have Troy Selwood as a premium midfieldfielder, Dylan Grimes as a premium back and Nathan Ablett as my locked-in Captain this year … 😉

  13. I do believe the Everitt comment was aimed at me, PA.

I even received an email from BS during the week asking me to take him through my thinking when selecting him. I dotpointed my response:
    >> Preseason average: 105
    >> No C Bolton, no Malceski
    >> A firm belief that players get better when changing clubs

BS is running him down on the basis of one game which proves nothing except how little he knows about this caper. Everitt WILL get better. The season goes for another 23 weeks. We’ll see who’s laughing at the end.

  14. And my mistake with one other set of brothers, has been driving Krakoeurs …

The good thing with Ottens too is he is far more than competent as a resting FWD.

  15. You make me laugh Motts…. and I really LOVE your conviction!!!! Hell, I might trade him in next week…. Perhaps I’ll dump dead-wood Goddard and save some cash.

  16. I watched that one, and Burgoyne got a ton of it…. I was thinking BOG and 140-150 points…. I was surprised his score wasn’t higher….. but that was a good pick up so far Motts and Shane.

  17. Clark plays in the Ruck PA…. can’t trade him for a backman. I thought you knew better 🙂

PA, off the topic…. what characters do you use to do the different faces…. I only know the standard : then ) = 🙂

    Not sure what : then – then ) gives me…. testing 🙂

  19. thinking I might trade Barlow for Curnow in my mids leaving enough spare cash to trade Duigan for either McKernan-not this week- bye, Penderson or Markovic.

OR trade Barlow for fellow WB Libertore, leaving some cash spare to change/upgrade my 2nd ruck with still some money spare for next week’s trades?

  20. Just got of the phone with my brother, he has already made two trades!!! And not due to LTI. Looks like my bet of finishing higher in our league than him I’d a sure thing

  21. I’ll give you credit Mottsy, it is your site after all!

But I was on the Burgs bandwagon very early in the piece too, just a smooth player, has plenty of time and at that price how could you go past him?

  22. Motts is looking forward to seeing Wallis run around for the Doggies this week. Motts has it on good authority that he’ll be a better player than L’il Libba.

  23. Have you got Fev in the forward line?

Seriously I can’t believe he hasn’t been removed from the SC players list yet!

  25. I can quote big Sexy saying earlier in the per season “My advice is to jump on Cox, grab Big Cox with both hands while you can and not let go…. You don’t want to let Cox slip through your fingers, and leave you dribbling about missing out” 😛 and if u didnt take his advise, then bad luck 🙂

  26. I have Chris Knights, and Adelaide has a bye this week. I will put Darling OR Richardson in my starting 22. I’m thinking of Darling, because his versing Port – and Richo is playing against the Pies.

  27. Got caught out:
    * Thought Rhys O’Keeffe (Carl) was a steel at $91,700 given his 100pt avgs over the previous 5 seasons
    * Thought Jacob Brennan (WC) was great value at $103,600 since he’s now playing in a midfield with Ablett and Rischitelli
    * Thought Matthew Watson (Carl) was too cheap to pass up at $103,600 given he’s the son of Tim and James Hird will get playing like a legend this year.

Look at my score and none of them played. Turns out i got the wrong names and these are all young kids. How’d have known?!?!

  28. He was on 11 at halftime. Not a sound investment to bank him as getting 100 each week – and it was at AAMI.

  29. Remember Robert Walls saying “I just love big Cox” on the Foxsports’ On the Couch a few years back?

  30. thinking of giving Yarran one more week, then he’s out for tapscott if tapscott fires again, will save plenty of cash this way and upgrade elsewhere. Also looking to bring in Curnow after next week if he scores big again…just not sure who to trade out?? Kennedy or Atley, maybe Boak??? Any advice?

  31. BS,
Kennedy and Everitt both scored within 5 points of their last years average while they both played shit games. Your getting what you payed for and they’re only going to get better.
Although as the avatar shows, I can be a bit bias…

  32. He’s always been used as a tagger I thought Pump. Gets points for tackles but doesn’t get enough of the pill to increase his scoring average to what you would want from a midpricer.

  33. pretty sure ur right deano it was more a gut feeling he could go to the midfield with malceski out and thai due back soon everret coming in etc…

  34. On a rival website i just noticed this list of the 20 most popular SC selection this year.

I’ve got 16 of the top 20. Bloody hell!! Hope my more unique selections (people like A Swallow, Pendlebury, Higgins, Cox) fire for me.

The one stands out is that Cox was not in the top 20 selections!!

  35. I have 19 of those 20 Roo! Only one I didn’t pick was Pavlich, thought S. Johnson could be a bit of a differential to him.

  36. Boak should fire up this week, but wouldn’t trust him as captain yet.

Had a very average rnd1 and still got 85 odd.
