Scoring Anomalies – Round 19

Written by The Salamander on August 1 2019

I have written before about how there are still a fair few things that SyntheticCoach doesn’t know about. Well, I have since reminded it of that fact, with blindspot warnings now built-in to the breakdown functionality. For example, it can now say useful things like this:

James Worpel (Hawthorn)
• Effective kicks: 11 => 44
• Effective handballs: 15 => 22.5
• Clangers: 5 => -20
• • of which frees-against: 1
• Ground-ball gets: 11 => 49.5
• Goals: 0 => 0
• Behinds: 0 => 0
• Marks: 4 => 8
• • of which contested: 0 => 0
• • of which intercepts: 0 => 0
• Tackles: 3 => 12
• Frees-for: 0 => 0
• Hitouts-to-advantage: 0 => 0
• Goal assists: 0 => 0.0
• Spoils: 0 => 0
• Other one-percenters: 1 => 1.5
Total: 117.5

Bindspots:
• Player had 7 clearances – perhaps some were gathered from a hitout (2 points each)?
• Player had 14 uncontested possessions that did not come from a mark. Perhaps some came from handball-recieves (1.5 points each)?
• Player had 7 score involvements – perhaps this led to favourable scaling?
• SyntheticCoach knows nothing about when the game was on the line, let alone who did what when it was. This can have a massive effect on scaling.

You will also be pleased to see that the output is now significantly less ugly. I am still trying to figure out what to use in place of equals-signs (which give the server a hissy fit); I think the ‘=>’ arrows (which I like to think of as rockets) look okay, but I’m sure we could do better. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Oh, and CD gave Worpel 106, compared with a post-scaling Synthetic score of 108, in case you were wondering.

Moving on, Carlton ruckman Andrew Phillips looks to have been cheated slightly on the weekend, with CD awarding him 114 points, compared to SyntheticCoach’s 131 (146.5). Meanwhile, at face value, it looks like his captain, Patrick Cripps, might have been scaled a bit generously, with SyntheticCoach awarding him 136 (151.5), compared to CD’s 152. However, this is where the blindspot warnings really come into their own:

Patrick Cripps (Carlton)
• Effective kicks: 8 => 32
• Effective handballs: 18 => 27.0
• Clangers: 4 => -16
• • of which frees-against: 1
• Ground-ball gets: 10 => 45.0
• Goals: 1 => 8
• Behinds: 0 => 0
• Marks: 4 => 8
• • of which contested: 0 => 0
• • of which intercepts: 0 => 0
• Tackles: 7 => 28
• Frees-for: 4 => 16
• Hitouts-to-advantage: 0 => 0
• Goal assists: 1 => 3.5
• Spoils: 0 => 0
• Other one-percenters: 0 => 0.0
Total: 151.5

Bindspots:
• Player had 19 clearances – perhaps some were gathered from a hitout (2 points each)?
• Player had 11 uncontested possessions that did not come from a mark. Perhaps some came from handball-recieves (1.5 points each)?
• Player had 8 score involvements – perhaps this led to favourable scaling?
• SyntheticCoach knows nothing about when the game was on the line, let alone who did what when it was. This can have a massive effect on scaling.

Maybe he actually deserved even more?

Moving on, Dane wanted to know if Joel Selwood fully deserved his 145 on the weekend. SyntheticCoach gave him 137 (148.5), with the breakdown also having this to say:

Bindspots:
• Player had 7 score involvements – perhaps this led to favourable scaling?

Dane also wanted to know if Macrae deserved even more than his 153. SyntheticCoach gave him 170 (191.5), so on that alone, I would have to say yes. But it gets even worse when you look at the blindspots:

Bindspots:
• Player had 8 clearances – perhaps some were gathered from a hitout (2 points each)?
• Player had 15 uncontested possessions that did not come from a mark. Perhaps some came from handball-recieves (1.5 points each)?
• Player had 13 score involvements – perhaps this led to favourable scaling? (Not this time, it didn’t!)

I normally try to keep my personal opinions out of this now that I have a computer telling me what to think, but this time, I’ll make an exception: robbed.

Did any scores seem off to you on the weekend? Let us know in the comments, and I’ll let you know what SyntheticCoach had to say about it.

    1. 33 percent kicking efficiency really hurt him on the weekend.

      SyntheticCoach gave him 50 (55.5 pre-scaling).

      Wayne Milera (Adelaide Crows)
      • Effective kicks: 3 => 12
      • Effective handballs: 4 => 6.0
      • Clangers: 5 => -20
      • • of which frees-against: 1
      • Ground-ball gets: 3 => 13.5
      • Goals: 0 => 0
      • Behinds: 0 => 0
      • Marks: 6 => 12
      • • of which contested: 0 => 0
      • • of which intercepts: 0 => 0
      • Tackles: 8 => 32
      • Frees-for: 0 => 0
      • Hitouts-to-advantage: 0 => 0
      • Goal assists: 0 => 0.0
      • Spoils: 0 => 0
      • Other one-percenters: 0 => 0.0
      Total: 55.5

      If it hadn’t been for his 8 tackles, things could have been really ugly.

  1. What a massive effort in this article. Well done!

    Had MacRae C on the weekend so would have loved a few more points for him…..

    Hope everyone who complains about the SC scoring is educating themselves further by reading your article Salamander. Research on how points are scored has enhanced my game viewing over the years and helped me to not complain about some players scores…

    Thanks for your work again.
