SCT Tech League 2019 – Team Reveal

Written by Chips Ahoy! on March 14 2019

Hey all,

Welcome to the Tech League team reveal for 2019. Motts has thrown me the keys this season, so lets jump into it.

Firstly, just a quick refresh of the rules. With the Tech League, every team starts and finishes Round 1 with exactly the same squad of 30 players.

  1. This squad MUST remain unchanged until Supercoach opens for Round 2 (even if players including rookies aren’t named when teams are announced next week)
  2. You can bench and captain whomever you want during Round 1, but you cannot trade players out of your squad until the beginning of Round 2
  3. Once Round 2 opens, you’re free to trade as you wish for the remainder of the season
  4. Each league is run by a member of SCT, who will check all teams. Any incorrectly entered squads will be ineligible to compete
  5. The simplest way to double-check you have the right squad, is to compare your ‘Remaining Salary’. You should have $187,900
  6. Make sure you join the SCT Tech League Group

Ok, pretty straight forward. Onto the team.

I absolutely love playing Tech League, and for those that haven’t before, I definitely encourage you enter this year (using an account created by your wife, boyfriend, child or dog, of course…). There’s a few reasons why it’s great, one of which is scratching that early season trade itch. While most coaches in SC Classic sit on their trades until Rounds 6-7, with Tech League, you absolutely need to start trading as soon as possible. With everyone starting with the same team, getting an early advantage in critical.

Also, by mid-season, when things start to go pear-shaped with your classic team, Tech League gives you another challenge to keep you interested for the full season.

Another reason Tech League is great, is it provides a squad of players you wouldn’t traditionally pick, and allows you to often make more speculative trades. Suddenly you become interested in a less popular premium, that for whatever reason, you wouldn’t consider for your classic team. Some use to refer to this as ‘the Matty Priddis’ effect, who despite being a consistent premium, always featured in relatively few sides. Until this season, Lachie Neale was another that has always had relatively low ownership.

This season, the Tech League is made up of the unpopular premiums, that despite boasting healthy scoring averages, are currently featuring in 5% or less of teams. They are PODs in a sense, but in reality they are proven performers* that have been shunned by the 2019 Supercoach Community.

Hopefully this team provides a much broader scope of interest for you across your weekend, giving you a bunch of premiums that haven’t made your classic side, but will now be an additional source of curiosity (and frustration) each round.

*Rookie selections not based of ownership levels
** Proven performers apart from the Rucks, which is a nightmare, obviously…

A couple of players may jump out. Gaff will obviously miss the first two rounds, so coaches will need to decide whether to ride out his suspension, or flick him ahead of Round 2. Lobb is the other who is bending the rules a little bit. He’s never been a premium, but I wanted to leave a decent amount of cash ($187,900) plus he has DPP status, which gives coaches some flexibility to bring in Gawn or Grundy.

Apart from those two, every other premium could justifiably make his way into any coaches starting classic line-up, despite current low ownership. Except for Hawkins and McDonald, most have been mentioned sporadically in RMT, although for one reason or another, coaches are leaning another way.

There’s some obvious upgrade targets. Danger, Heeney, Cripps and Laird will no-doubt make there way into most Tech Leagues sides, but when, and for who is where the fun (suffering) begins.

** To sign-up for the SCT Tech League, email your interest to: Schwarzwalder ‘at’ supercoachtalk ‘dot’ com.  He’ll provide a League and Group Code.**

So there it is – the Unpopular Premiums of 2019!  For the first time, the Tech League has a cash prize of $100 to the team that scores the most pts for the year (top of the Tech League Group) thanks to our anonymous donor.  Good luck to all Tech League coaches this season!

  1. This would have to be one of the best looking Dead teams I’ve seen, loving the concept of the “unpopular premiums” so thanks for throwing out the rot that Motts has dealt us up the last couple of seasons, to hopefully something that may mean I won’t run out of trades quite so early!

Looking forward to the challenge after being eliminated in the prelim last season.

      1. Apologies Motts, I was working off the comment “Motts has thrown me the keys this season”. Whoever came up with the concept & the fresh theme each year, should be congratulated, its a great league to be a part of.

  2. I have been waiting for this all summer, as I couldn’t wait to give this a go for the first time! This team definitely suits the name of Nato’s potatos or the old name of The Spud Patch
The more we can get doing this comp the better! Come one guys joins up and give yourself something different to focus on and see how well of a coach you really are!

    1. Thanks Motts! Had a few ideas but in the end was keen to put a fairly strong team together. Hopefully we’ll get some coaches performing well overall!

  3. I’d love to but if I did it would jeopordise any success/winnings that my primary team may generate, remember the post from Sam who finished 11th but was then upgraded to 10th because somebody in the top 10 had two teams.
Perhaps as the administrator of the #1 supercoach community Andrew could approach heraldsun to get an excemption to the ‘one team only’ rule for the Tech league?
I don’t have a wife, child, dog or cat and none of my resident wildlife has email.

    1. I was just thinking the same because of Sam’s post the other day…

Is there a way of making sure that helping out my wife’s Tech League team won’t jeapordise my $50k budgeted winnings for the year?

      1. When I did it a couple of years back, I only ever logged into my Tech Team from a library or internet café. A VPN would work, too.

It’s a tough call. It was great fun back in 2017, but the stakes are potentially very high if you get caught.

I guess it all comes down to how serious a chance you consider yourself to be to win the whole thing.

    3. We’ve been through this before unfortunately. Best option is completely different email address and completely different name…….except for me……overseas applicants are ineligible to win anyway 😉 Plus I’m quite sure that I’m not on the Christmas mailing list of the HeraldSun……

    1. Why would he do that? He left the ones from the rd13 bye that we want. Danger, Grundy, Gawn etc. Adding salt into the wounds 🙁
