SCT Technical League

Written by Motts on February 29 2012

Received this email from Stocky tonight. It’s pretty long so pour yourself a tall glass of cordial and settle in. I’d be happy to facilitate it with polls if enough people’s Mums expressed an interest in being part of it.

Take it away, Stocky…

“Hey Motts,

With your recent poll on Premium Defenders, it reminded me of an idea I posted last year in the SCT Suggestion Box about a competition to test our ‘coaching’ skills against each other more directly.

Essentially, we set up a standard team of all the popular premiums and rookies, and all those that wish to participate set up an account with this exact team. The idea then is to see who uses their trades, emergencies and captain the wisest to see who wins league and overall honours.

One small hitch is getting around the “one team per player” rule. My guess is that a lot of girlfriends, boyfriends, mums, dads, kids and dogs will have a team this year also.  As long as this doesn’t ethically challenge you, I think it could work.

The other difficult part would be choosing an initial squad of 30 players. This is where your polls comes in handy!! The defenders poll could be copied and used in exactly the same way for mids, rucks and forwards.

Firstly, I think it would be beneficial to determine a team structure. It will make selecting the team much easier.

The ruck set-up has already been voted on (see ‘Ruck Strategy 2012′ post on 21/1) with the set and forget strategy seeming to be a winner. It could be worth revisiting this as we progress through the NAB cup and teams are tweaked to see if opinions/strategies have changed.

It would be interesting to see the most popular mix of premiums, mid-pricers and rookies for each of the other positions. However, with the huge variety of combinations, I think setting up a poll could get very complicated. Having a look at a few of the teams posted in the Rate My Team thread, most teams seem to have 3-4 premium defenders and a mid-pricer, 3 premium midfielders and a mid-pricer and 3-4 premium forwards with 1-2 mid-pricers. Overall, I think we can easily select a side into the following format without having to worry about $$$:

Format is –

Position: Premiums, Mid-Pricers, Rookies

Defenders:         3, 1, 5

Midfielders:       3, 1, 4

Rucks:             2, 0, 2

Forwards:          3, 1, 5

I would suggest creating polls to determine who are the most popular picks for each position, for each price category. From here, my guess is that we’ll have enough $$ left over to upgrade a rookie to a forward /defender premium, depending on who the most popular picks are.

I’m sure there’ll be arguments and disagreements about who should or shouldn’t be in the team, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter what team we select. Everyone is going to have to manage the same players and can choose to trade in and out whoever they want. Thats the point of the exercise.

Sorry if I complicated things or created a lot of work, but i reckon it’d be great fun. I remember having a few thumbs up and comments when I first posted the idea, so I think it will have good support.

Cheers for your time Motts, you do a great job with the site as is.

Stocky

PS I’ve always rated your advice so much higher than either Duck or Big Sexy’s – clearly you know a hell of a lot about everything to do with Supercoach. I should also add I often find myself laughing out loud and banging the table at some of your comments – gee your wit is rapier sharp. I’ve also got a sneaky suspicion you’re a good lookin’ rooster and a massive hit with laydeez.”

*OK so I might’ve tagged a little bit on the end there.

  1. Yeah, my girlfriend would probably put a team in that if you have room for her, although shes not very good so I might have to “help” her. hehe

  2. i know you guys dont know me that well (or at all) but i would love to be a part of this.
i’ve suggested this to a few mates before and they seriously cant be stuffed doing anything like that.

i think this is a great idea, and it would take a whole lot more thinking to get over the other competitors.

so yeh, if you’d have me, i’d love to join in.

  3. Actually, thinking about it, we could create more leagues if we need to so don’t fracture a finger on your keyboard coz you’re trying to write “me too” really fast – there’s plenty of time.

  5. Sounds great i will play
I can already see myself making at least 6 trades asap just so my team would be different to everyone else.
After first round i know i would trade out one mid pricer to the best rookie not in the starting team and then trade another mid pricer to an elite premium just to get ahead of the pack

  7. If only Herald Sun utilised this idea, running this competition alongside normal supercoach to create a competition based purely on skill. Brilliant idea Stocky !

  9. Another idea on top of this as someone else has mentioned before is to have a “SUPERCOACH TALK TEAM” which should start with this team that everyone will and then as the weeks go on polls will determine if we trade or not and who we trade for. Other sites have a similar thing going on as well. This would lead to great discussions and debate IMO. Just a thought anyway.

  10. Will we need to stick to a budget though if purely selected through polls? Maybe not if it’s only 3 premiums etc.

  11. i already put this in as a suggestion only, what do you guys think??

    “Position: Premiums, Mid-Pricers, Rookies

    Defenders: 3, 1, 5
    Midfielders: 3, 1, 4
    Rucks: 1, 1, 2
    Forwards: 3, 1, 5

only question now is who is eligible for the positions??

i reckon we should only choose like this.
    prem def: $500k+
    prem mid: $600+
    prem ruck: $550K+
    prem fwd: $500+

    mid price def: $350k – $450k
    mid price mid: $400k – $500k
    mid price ruck: $350k – $450k
    mid price fwd: $350k – $450k

    Rookies – $200k and under”

I reckon it’d force us to think more carefully at our team and strategize a lot more if we limit the players who we can choose.

  12. so… question…

how does round 1 work? if we are all starting with the exact same team, do we just get a choice on which rookies we start on the ground? which would give the scores a difference, or are we all having the exact same score for round 1?

  13. League update: 10 teams now locked in. There would’ve been 11 but I had to delete someone for already having a team done.

  14. will definately make for some close scores then! with rookies between 40-90, and everyone will use all their premium sand mid pricers. will be awesomely close in the first couple of rounds. haha

  15. With the leagues not starting until RD3 will we be able to make trades over RDs 1 & 2?

It could save a few draws and throw up an extra strategic element. Do you burn trades early to get some POD????
