As an avid WCE supporter and a close follower of the Tigers, I’ve come up with a few names that might be worth a look in at some stage throughout the year.
1. Troy Taylor – The resident bad boy of Punt Rd and he hasn’t even played a game. Apparently he’s an absolute freak, in much the same vein as Daniel Motlop and will be the X factor the Tigers are screaming out for down forward. Whether or not that is this year is the risk we’ll have to take, chances are though, due to the Tigers’ poor form last year and the grim outlook for 2010, he’ll get his go sooner rather than later. Charges pending of course.
2. Gerrick Weedon – Has been given the recently-retired David Wirrapanda’s number 44 guernsey, so WCE must expect big things from him. Exciting small forward who is great above head and has a good defensive side to his game. A lot depends on how the Eagles go this year as to whether or not he’ll be a regular fixture. A forward line of LeCras, Lynch, Kennedy, McKinley and with Andrew Embley likely to play forward, it could be difficult for him to break into the senior line up.
3. Matthew Dea – Probably won’t play a big role for Richmond this year as he’s only been playing AFL for 12 months! But there are big wraps on his athletic ability and decision making with a history of junior basketball at the elite level giving him a great fitness base to build on. I’ve put him simply because of how bleak the outlook for RFC is at the moment, they could get desperate at some stage and decide to throw this kid to the wolves to get some games into him.
4. Nicholas Winmar – The name says it all really. Less likely to play that Matt Dea, but has every chance of impressing St Kilda and being given a run against the Dees or Freo!
These kids aren’t going to win the Brownlow this year but for less than $100K you can’t really go wrong. Hopefully they get some game time in the NAB Cup/Challenge and we can have a look at how they handle it before committing to a spot on the pine for Round 1.
