Sneak Previews – James Aish (Coll)

For those that saw Hughesy spraying the Lions this year, he described Aish as a quiet guy………’still thinking about where ya gonna play next year, are ya?’ Classic Hughesy, Aish was more than a little uncomfortable. Speculation was rife all season that Aish would ask for a trade after refusing to sign a new deal. After nominating Collingwood as his club of choice, a deal was made on the last day of trade week.

Aish made 21 appearances in his debut season which saw him finish 4th in the Rising Star Award of 2014. He ranked 6th for total disposals of any Lion, 4th for marks and 5th in tackles. With the constant rumors on his playing future, Aish seemed a tad disconnected on the field in 2015. The poise and precision of 2014 just didn’t show up for 2015. Despite playing ten fewer games last year, Aish managed practically the same amount of clangers as 2014 (30 & 28). With his numbers down all over the ground, a finger injury ended his 2015 campaign in Rd17.

If he were judged solely on his junior credentials, Aish would rank right up there with the best. Not only did he represent Sth Australia twice during the U18 Championships (2012 & 2013), he was also selected for the All Australian team on both occasions. On top of that he played at senior level for Norwood during the same period (remembering he was only 16/17 at the time), playing a major role in winning two premierships.

Due to his disappointing 2015 season, Aish is now an affordable $275 700 and comes with the extra bonus of dual position. He’ll have plenty of competition getting a spot in the Collingwood line-up however. All eyes will be on him during the NAB Challenge. Without the speculation on his playing future, he might be able to concentrate on his football for a change……….

  1. Yep, awkwardly priced but we’re yet to see the best of him. We’ll soon see if he’s an option or not…….

  2. If you are able to pay 150k+ less for someone else with similar job security – I know where my money is being spent. Has to be “watch this NAB space” at best for me.
