Sneak Previews – Scott Selwood (Gee)

Written by Schwarzwalder on February 3 2016

Starting Price: $310 300

SC Scoring History
2015 – 58 points per game from 13 games played
2014 – 81 ppg (11)
2013 – 104 ppg (18)
2012 – 102 ppg (22)

To say that Selwood comes from a football family is somewhat of an understatement. ‘Scooter’ is the youngest of four brothers that have all played at AFL level (Adam, Troy & Joel). Taken at Pick 22 by the Eagles in the 2007 Draft, the Bendigo youngster toiled away at his first two seasons before making his mark as a tagger then ‘in & under’ midfielder. Chronic ankle problems have hampered his last two seasons. Despite being available for selection, Selwood was overlooked for the Eagles Prelim & Grand Final appearances in 2015. Exercising his rights under the rules of free agency, Selwood opted to join his brother Joel at Geelong………a deal was brokered during the trade period.

It’s easy to forget that Scott Selwood is still only 25 years of age (will turn 26 during Rd1). Despite having missed so much football over the last two years, he’s played 135 games at the top level. For someone that averaged 104ppg just three years ago (his last injury-free season), his starting price of $310 300 reads like a massive bargain for Supercoaches. From 18 matches he topped the SC-ton on ten occasions with a further three games over 90 pts. He averaged a massive 27 disposals per game in 2013, 40% of which were contested possessions. Only a year earlier, Selwood took out the Best & Fairest Award ahead of Big Cox………..There’s no more relevant info here, I just miss using the term ‘Big Cox’ in a sentence 😉

With the off-season signing of Dangerfield & impending return of Mitch Duncan, there is massive competition for a spot in the Cats midfield. With experience on his side, Scooter will get his chance to shine at some stage. If his ankles hold up and he can find some form, then he’s definitely worth considering as a ‘stepping stone’ (to a fallen premium) option . Despite Scooter being confident of an injury-free season, reports suggest that he’s struggling to be ready for Rd1 (along with his brother). Keep a close eye on the site for more news heading into the season……….

  1. Scooter can really play, he will definitely be in Geelongs best 22 if his ankle comes good, and he is very consistent.

In any other year, he would definitely be in my side if fit for round 1, but we are very spoilt for choice around that price range in the MIDS this year.

At the moment, I have the Libba, O’Meara and Crouch combo – and looking forward to the pre-season games so that I can change my team after every new game!!!

  2. whilst I rate having Scooter at the Eagles, it’s more so the leadership and behind the scene qualities I rate. On field if he gets his body right and isn’t a tagger, you’ve got to pick him. That’s a big if. Plus side is he won’t be right for R1 so we can have a sneak peak before any price rise. I rate Dale Thomas and Scooter as the same. And there’s no way I’m picking Thomas.

  3. Two Selwood’s at Geelong plus Dangerfield means my pants are constantly wet. Can’t wait for the season to start!
