Sneak Previews – Zach Merrett (Ess)

Written by Schwarzwalder on March 1 2016

Starting Price: $477 400

SC Scoring History
2015 – 88 points per game from 17 games played
2014 – 64ppg (20)

For the older Tigers supporters out there, my idol growing up was ‘The Ghost’, Jimmy Jess. Strong hands, agile for his size and that booming kick……..bloody loved it! One of my earliest footy memories is from 1986. The Ghost, fair dinkum, got onto a barrel at the G from 70m out against the Doggies, nearly hitting my brother and I in the old Ponsford Stand (we were on the 2nd level!!!). I think that distance grows by the year 😉 Zach Merrett is a lucky guy. As a kid he grew up in Cobden (country Vic) supporting the Dogs. Zach Merrett gets to play footy every day with his boyhood idol, his current teammate Adam Cooney…….how cool is that??

Since the CAS decision was handed down to the ‘Essendon 34’ in early January, Supercoaches everywhere have been running a fine-tooth comb through the remaining Bombers List. While many are searching for those crucial rookies / cash cows / top-up players, others are looking for breakout contenders as a Point Of Difference. The hype surrounding Zach Merrett seems to be gathering momentum.

The experts are tipping a long season for the Bombers (apart from the two Carlton games……sorry Motts) with a bottom two spot already being penciled in. The beauty of Supercoach is that a bottom two side can still produce a decent breakout contender. Entering his third year at AFL level, this 20 year old is being widely tipped to fill the void left by Heppell, Watson & Stanton.

After a respectable first year average of 64ppg, Merrett’s SC output jumped a massive 24ppg in 2015 (so much for ‘2nd year blues’). He ran at a 95avg over his last ten games before a foot injury ended his season in Rd18. Merrett accumulated 20+ disposals in 14 of 18 games last season with a low count of 16 against the Saints. While only hitting the SC ton on two occasions (140 & 130!), Merrett only dropped under 70 once (69 against the Saints……again). What really drove his SC scoring in 2015 was his tackling. Young Zach is a machine, making just under six tackles per game…….always brings the big points with the folk at Champion Data!

I’m quite sure that Merrett will, at some stage, start copping a tag. Perhaps his idol, Cooney, can give him a few tips on how to deal with them. If Zach started around $400k, he’d surely be THE Hype player of the pre-season. With that awkward starting price however, you’re taking a gamble from the outset that Merrett will be a Top 6-10 Forward this year. One thing’s for sure…….The Ghost has got him covered for distance 😉

* Stats from NAB1: 24 disposals & four tackles for 124 SC pts

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

  1. Showing your whimsical side Schwarz, love it!

Zerritt wasn’t on my radar, but a great assessment. Too big of a gamble for me, but an interesting POD.

  2. Expecting around the hundred ppg from him. Likely starter in my team, but not quite a lock.

Watching with intetest. There’s a few others with similar outputs so far this NAB (eg Nick Graham, Matt Crouch, dare I say it Dale Thomas) who may be deemed better value at the price.

Could also go a bit more of a POD and go Stringer or Stevens….

  3. That F3 spot is a tricky one for me currently have wingard sitting there but I’m also keeping an eye on Buddy, Stringer, and young Merrett..
His an interesting one will get more midfield time this year and is capable of breaking out this year.

  4. He’s not quite a lock yet but I’ve been very excited about him. I’ve commented this before, but other than Dusty and Barlow, there are to many question marks around the other premo forwards. If you don’t have risks across other lines, I think Merrett is worth the punt.
