Supercoach Tips 2012

Written by Motts on March 8 2012

A couple of years ago (back when PA was plain old Paul Aufiero and Happy Go Lucky was 2/3 lowercase) we posted some advice for those just starting out.

We did it again last year too.

With more and different people on the site these days, I thought it’d be useful if we asked everybody again.

What’s the one piece of SC advice you would give anyone who was starting out in the game in 2012?

Note: The Josh Gibson rule has now been made redundant with reversible trades.

  1. Do not pick Shaun Higgins.
Listen to most of the advice on this web site but not all of it.
Listen to none of the advice the Herald Sun gives you as it is mostly tripe.
Motts, Big Sexy and Duck are gods and are to be worshipped as such.(virgin sacrifice is optional but preferred).

  2. My advice from learning last year was to not trade willy nilly. Trades are gold. In addition i found mid pricers risky. Pick a blend of guns and rookies
But that’s just my 2 cents.

Players I wouldn’t use again from last year are Hurn, Higgins and Dawes. My fault as I bought them but once bitten…. Above all good luck to anyone starting out and to old timers!

  3. When you get home after a huge night on the turps and your team has been thrashed or your SC captain gets knocked out in the first 5 mins, take advantage of the new “delete” facility (colloquially known as the Omen button) after you submit your rant. 🙂 🙂 🙂

  4. Good one from roo bloke last year so true though 🙂
Walk away now .. it will become an all consuming passion that you can’t switch off from. GET OUT WHILE YOU HAVE YOUR SANITY!!

  5. Learn as much about the up & coming rookies as you can, as they will make up 50% of your initial team………….they will also be the catalys behind you upgraded throughout the season, to make a premium team come finals time! ……..IMO get this right = Happy SC season!!

  7. As important as it is to select the correct rookies, it is as important to select the right premiums. Accordingly, spread your research across the stars and rookies alike. Brian Lake’s happened every season, don’t let it be you who had them in your team. Oh, and there is this guy named Gary Ablett, he can play a bit…just sayin’…

  8. Lessons learned in 2011 ~
    1) Don’t argue, Ablett is one of the BEST.
    2) Pick those rookies wisely, it can mean the difference of a premium player.
Prime example last year – RUCK: Taking Derickx instead of Smith.
    3) Double & Triple check those rookies during the pre-season and ensure they get elevated to the main lists of their respective clubs.
    4) SCT is where the REAL advice is at.

    Err damn, went above one..

  9. Need a hand guys:-

    Chapman thumbs up
    Pavlich thumbs down

Keep in mind that Chappy is hell bent on giving back to his teammates after last season half injured all year.

  11. Thumbs Up: Hargrave D5 & MacIntosh R2
    Thumbs Down: Broughton D5 & Giles/Stephenson R2 (1/3 Strategy)

Just don’t know how MacIntosh will be used this year with Petrie and Goldy.

  12. Last year I tried to pick players who generally have a fairly good record with the tribunal. Ie. the risk takers were avoided. Or the ones who just love a good scrag fight. Though, by choosing risk takers, I think that is where you can score really highly in SC, it is not without a great deal of risk involved. Slow and steady *can* win the race.

*Always have 1-2 trades left for GF week. Absolute gold*

ps. the more I think about it this year… the more I’m starting to think “F*ck the byes”. Which, after last year, feels wrong to me. But isn’t it better to start with the BEST team possible? Tempted to go Cox & HMac this year but they are both r11ers and with Giles also being a r11… that doesn’t really work.

  13. Don’t load up on too many GWS rookies, as we saw with gold coast last year, only a couple will score consistently eg: swallow and smith. The only GWS players I will have this year will be a bench midfielder( yet to be selected) and Giles in the ruck is a given. I would suggest 3 maximum.

  14. I’d expect him to to get a lot more games this year.. Goal kicker, quick and gutsy. I had him in my sc side last year. Can’t tell you much else as I haven’t seen my boys play yet other than the intra which he played well in. Sorry I’m not much help. I do rate him and siposs as most likely to get a game, As well as ledger and Simpkin. I thought Ledger had played more than a miserly 4 games!

  15. Oops and sorry did you mean jack Steven? God he came along last year! Absolute leaps and bounds, will be interesting to see how he goes with Lenny back. Hope he doesn’t take the foot off the accelerator.

  16. Listen to all SCT advice but don’t just follow the herd. If you’ve got a good gut feeling on a player and a good bit of research to back it up then take the punt.

Suckling & Fyfe made my season last year.

  18. Never trade sideways unless you absolutely have to (LTI = long term injury). Typically trade in pairs. Downgrade a fat ($$) rookie to a cheapie, with the spare cash, upgrade another fat rookie to premium.

  19. Always support the people who have commented on SCT with your thoughts (even if it is just clicking thumbs up or thumbs down)

  20. Don’t load up on players from teams that have it easy in the last few rounds (aka finals). Some coaches (Alaster Clarkson I’m looking at YOU!) like to rest half their side in preparation for the real finals and it will decimate your team.

  21. Gather as much info from various sources as possible and run with logic and your own instinct. Definately look at team and positional trends from the previous year. Build a memory bank of failures and successes for future references. Enjoy the ride!

  22. Take note of Consistency and Fixture
Think Brett Kirk – 105-115 every week. Didn’t miss a game in 45 years.
Think Collingwood a season or two back with 13 games (give or take) in a row at the MCG. Half of which were bottom 8 clubs.

  25. Gee Dangerfield is looking like having a break out year in the midfield… Has been slick every time I’ve seen him with the pill. And is a DPP.

  26. Dont over-think.
Pick a good side and stick with the guys you pick (unless injury occurs)
Overpicking will cause stressing in the last few days before lockout, means u wont pick the team u REALLY want
