Target Test – Johnno Brown?

Written by Big Sexy on February 7 2012

I know Mottsy likes to put two players up against one another, so I’m going to tackle it a little differently.  I’m going to focus on the player that everyone sees, considers and has risks…. they aren’t a full blown premium, or dirt cheap rookie.  So don’t expect to see Ablett, Swan, Pendles, Selwood or Juddy…. and don’t expect to see some rookie you’ve never heard of.

So first cab off the rank is Johhno Brown, aka Brown-dog.  He’s got a history of massive scores and massive injuries.  I drafted him last year the week before he had his face caved in for a second time.  So this season he’s starting at a bargin price of $397k, he’s well under value, but is the risk too great?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

  1. Its a tough one.
The only way he’ll find himself in “The Reach Arounds” is if he tears up the NAB cup. Should see plenty of him, apparently he’s playing in at least 3 games.

He doesnt fit the GnR strategy.
Hasnt avg over 100 in a year since 2007
As much as we all love him, he’s a midpricer. He’ll never avg over 100 again IMO. My guess is around the 90-95.

PS: anyone notice that in 2006 he only played 10 games but avg 140!

  3. He’s in my team at the moment. Doesn’t mean he’s a lock but he’s way unders, there aren’t many high scoring fwds these days, and i think he could easily maintain a strong scoring output all year.

  4. He is currently getting a run in my line up but I am torn, he has this uncanny ability to notch massive scores and I reckon his body maybe cherry ripe for one more decent season.

  5. Hafta wait till the NAB cup to see how Browny goes (just like every other player in my team) before i lock him in. But i hav a feeling he’s gonna come good….especially after a full pre season. Fingers crossed he doesnt go kamikaze & fly into a pack face first.

  6. Chapman is flying but let me just say I had Stevie j and chappy last year and they both got tested twice last year. With older bodies I’m very sure this will happen again especially before finals. Don’t know the answer but I know I won’t be touching Stevie j or chappy.

  7. Good choice and good write up Big Sexy One but maybe slightly misleading with those stats.

    True, he hasn’t averaged higher than 100 since 2007 but he was pretty damn close. 2008 – 99.8 2009 – 98.9 2010 – 97.6

Even if he only averages 90 I’ll take that for under 400k. That’s puts him not too far away from the top ten and will make at least 100k. Ripe to be upgraded to anyone you fancy or a golden F7.

The Teddy Bears should take a few steps forward this year and with their maturing gun midfield he will get good supply. As I said, I’ll take 90 but the man-love for the Brown Dog will be back in force when he’s cranking out 150s and averaging 110+

  8. I’m a bit torn – love the Brown-Dawg and he’s had his first full preseason in ages, but his previous averages (as mentioned) are a bit under 100, which is probably just below what you would want for a Keeper but it would seem a bit of a wasted trade to go from someone averaging 95 to someone averaging 105 points per round. Brown is also a bit injury prone (always has been), is getting a little older and struggled a little the past 2 seasons (and hasn’t had much of a chance to work out how he copes with the Forward Press).

Combine this with the decreased skill level when it comes to delivery from the Mids when compared to the Brisbane Lion’s Golden years (Rockcliff and Redden are great young players, but silky disposal skills are not their specialty, and Black will play less or be under more disposal pressure due to his increasing age and decreasing speed/agility). $400,000 is also a fair bit of money (even if it is cheaper than you could get Brown for in the past). All in all, I’m really torn on this one – and DON’T even get me started on N Roo !!
