Team Reveal – Huttabito

DEFENDERS

Sicily: I’m expecting a bounce back for Sic-Dawg this season after being thrown around last year dropping his average 11ppg. Could very well rival Lloyd for the #1 defender and not getting suspended last season shows he is maturing (even if he may have been close once or twice).

Houston: Every year I get sucked into a defender set for more midfield time (looking at you Lumumba) and Houston is that man this year. I was always speculative of this pick, but I can’t deny the coaches word and the sheer number of centre bounces he attended in Marsh week 1 along with averaging 111 over the last 4 games in 2019 played as a midfielder last year, despite the very small sample size.

Docherty: Probably should be price lower after 2 years out of the game, but he would be a much easier pick and I don’t mind his current price as you want to make sure he will be a top 10 defender. That I am positive he will be. Will become the play maker from half back again and cruise his way to 95 at a minimum.

Roberton: Obviously has health concerns but hasn’t missed a beat this off-season and playing a very supercoach friendly role. Might be managed, but very low risk given his price vs potential and is at a good price to be a stepping stone to a fallen premium come the byes if he doesn’t quite average enough.

MIDFIELDERS

I’m not mucking around this year in the midfield and I want all the premiums, so have decided to go full uber. At one point I even had Oliver at M7 and loved the rest of my team, so it’s still not out of the question for me to lean that way. But I also love a balanced team with the traditional 3/5/2/3 keepers with a couple of midpricers.

Macrae: First picked midfielder and hasn’t moved. No explanation needed.

Neale: I have only ever owned Neale for 1 week in my SuperCoach career and that was his for his injured 44 in 2017 – his only missed game in the last 5 years, so I hope I don’t break him again. Second highest SuperCoacher player over the last 5 years, seems like one of the safest picks out there.

Fyfe: It’s just not SuperCoach if I don’t start Fyfe.

Kelly: Durability a concern but as a premium scorer as they come. I’m buying into the whole first full pre-season he’s had in years and just hope the medical staff finally have it right with him.

Cripps: 195cm inside midfielder who can rack up 17 contested possessions, 6 tackles per game while moving forward and hit the scoreboard, yes please. It was a little weird watching him in the All-Stars match not have to carry a team and he ended up sitting back a lot more, so I do wonder if he ever steps back as the young blue midfield brigade mature but for 2020, I think it’s still alright.

RUCKS

$1.5 million is a lot of money to spend in the ruck division and I have my reservations of starting Gawn this year, but owning them both all last season was just lovely. My captain pick averaged in excess of over 140 in 2019 and the Grawndy combo was a big reason for it. It just made SuperCoach easy.

FORWARDS

Whitfield and Martin are a gift from the SuperCoach gods for me. I know not everyone is convinced with Martin, but he is the third highest scorer over the last 5 seasons and I’m happy to lock away a top 2 forward for sub $550k. Whitfield will get thrown around again (not quite sure how he got FWD status but anyway), runs all day and knows how to find the ball. 108 average for his last 14 games of 2018 and 111 in 2019 I think you would be mad not locking him away at F1.

Smith: I was very bullish on starting Smith the year he moved to Essendon and turned out to be a great starting pick. He was priced at $440k that season and comes in $105k cheaper than 2018 and with the state and uncertainty of the remaining forwards this year, I don’t mind a cheeky punt at F3.

Afterthoughts

It feels weird not having Dangerfield for the first time in forever but there has been a clear trend downwards the last 2 seasons. I would also like Oliver who I think is set for a big year at a slightly cheaper price then the others. It’s a tough one. Can’t have them all, but I like my current structure.

Something needs to change this season as my ranking has been getting worse the last 3 years!
2016 – 1,229
2017 – 1,492
2018 – 2,096
2019 – 5,801
So I would love for you to let me know where I went right/wrong and what you would do to improve it.

Current bank is all of 5k – my motto is, I would rather have no bank and a team I like than some bank and a team I don’t like.

  1. I really like this team, fairly similar to my own squad.

If roberton doesnt play marsh week 2 but gets named what would you do?

  2. Quality side!
I remember putting a post up about Fyfe and most coaches were against starting him. I usually would say yes, but why not?
    Thoughts appreciated.

    Tu ; Nat Fyfe

    Td ; Lachie Neale

  3. I’d probably trust your selection process more than mine Hutta, but did you look at moving Budarick to the mids so you have the swing and flex with all the F/Ms. Also same deal with moving Hill or Brander back to keep the swing between forward and defence.

Structurally, not sure you are going to miss Bianco, Robertson or Valente early, making way for those DPP moves.

Love the team as it stands, but I always look to the DPPs if I can and it doesn’t hurt a good structure.

    1. FWD rookie depth seems the shallowest at the moment so I’d prefer to keep Brander and Budarick there for now. Not too fussed about opening those DPP swings from Rd1, once I start upgrading the rookies I can flick them around as needed.

Rookies are all placeholders anyway for now and I’ve mainly just picked popular players on the bench.

  4. Great team Hutta.. You made me laugh about Houston. We never learn. Bernie Vince, Lumumba, McGrath and now Houston. All they need to say is more midfield time and we are sucked in….
You have both Fyfe and Kelly in the mid line…. Ballsy…. High risk, high rewards. You are heading for monster scores. I am taking just one of them because I like to keep my starting 13 premos until R22 and these 2 have more chance of not making it than making it.
Having said that, very balanced team. I like the B. Williams pick. Low ownership but he has entered my team too.

  5. It looks like a good team all be it a bit safe I feel .. I think there a few fwd/mid players you may regret not having like greenwood, wingard, acres, maybe even petracca and Ceglar if as it looks he has the number 1 ruck spot. It’s very much a rookie and premo team which I find hasn’t worked for me the last few years but that’s just my vibe ..

    1. Nathan

I think the thumbs down may be due to the fact..

Hutta has gone none of the above guys you mentioned purely because he is not sure which one will become relevant.

He still has at least 3 Premo Forward spots to fill.

By the time we are ready for upgrades we should all know a lot more about ,who is who in forward Premo land.

      I like this team Hutta.
I couldn’t start both Fyfe and Jelly myself. History suggests, It’s like starting with one less trade. 🙁
You have gone pretty safe in both defence ,and forward so I guess thats where your putting your risk.
      Fair play.

Lets just hope some more cheap Rookies show up this week .

      Thanks again Hutta

      1. I guess that’s the risk I’m talking about by picking them at the start of the season you save a 100k or maybe lots more .

For example Martin .. I haven’t picked him because I know somewhere in the season he will be worth the same or possibly less then he’s starting price .. the risk is I don’t miss out on some big points but I think by going greenwood say and acres I could get those points back

It’s risk v reward and most of that is in the starting team

Also I think we are looking a bit short in the rookies this year but that might change after this week

    2. Yeh my problem is youve just rattled off 5 names that need to be in talks with Whitfield, Martin, Heeney, Walters and Greene who are more than likely going to push top 6 FWDs again and players you will want season end.

History suggests 1, max 2 of those will be season keepers. Stuffed if i know which ones that will make it. Hence locking in the 2 big dogs and someone who has gone 95 before at a very discounted price.

  6. Ha!

My team is pretty much the same as I imagine many will be.

    I’ve gone:
    Daniel instead of Sicily
    Dunkley instead of Fyfe
    Tmitch instead of J Kelly

And thats about it. Hope we go well Hutta

    1. I’d back Sicily, Fyfe and JKelly to average more, but you certainly have a lot more chance getting 66 games from those 3! Something to think about for sure.

My rookie loophole game will need to be strong.

  7. Very very nice Hutta and I like your quotes!

    My forwards exactly same.
My differences are slight, but for now I’m chasing Lloyd and unsure on Doc.

I also can’t start Fyfe this year with what’s been posted of him playing more forward and Jelly is very questionable and not currently in my side (I can’t go against the average v points article now can I??!!)

Thanks for posting and the thought process too!

    1. I had Lloyd for a long time and I did kick myself last year not starting him. He’ll be hard to bring in if he goes nuts.

      1. Yeah mate, will be watching the matches with interest this week .. and then team lists and any info we can get on Dawson … if he looks like old role, with no other player offsetting, you simply cant go past his scores from last year over first 12 rounds …

  8. Very solid guns and Rookies. Pretty low risk selections all round. Good luck for the season Hutta. I’d be interested to here what happens if Gawn misses round 1?

    1. I’m hoping we get a cheap second ruck, I wouldnt mind taking a punt after pulling Witts off a few years ago.

  9. Port now have a round 11 bye. Might be worth removing Houston and making him an upgrade target.

    1

    1
    1. I’d argue the other way … it makes good sense to have him in … assuming you have some other upgrades already by then, you lose nothing, if he goes as well as expected he already covers you for all 3 byes and you save that trade …
each to their own though …

  10. I really like it, I’ve decided against starting Doc, reakon they’ll ease him in the real stuff, and probably needs to be managed after 2 knee reco’s. I have Fyfe as well and wanted Oliver but the funds only go so far. Had Fyfe last year and traded him after his KO thinking concussion would affect his scores..it didn’t! Missed that train!!

  11. This is a lovely team, maybe a little cookie cutter but that’s pretty rarely a bad thing. does the Bye news affect your Houston pick?

  12. Exactly the same defence as me except you have Bianco and I have Greaves.

Other than that instead of Gawn, I’m taking a punt on Naismith and as such I have a 6-premo midfield

I just figure if Swans weren’t confident they didn’t have good rucks, I don’t think they would have let Nank or Cameron go so easily.

Also, I just can’t back in Green after watching Hately last season. Their midfield is just too deep and too good for first year players

  13. I had this structure, Hutta, but the lack of decent forward rookies worried me so I have gone weirdly mid-price up forward instead.

  14. Good safe cookie cutter team but I want to say more so, I want to see Grundy absolutely dominate in Marsh2 before I’ll start a 700k ruck this year. Grunder was only average in the bushfire game and he got matched by Pittonet and De Konig during the 6qrtr praccy game the week before.
He could easily lose 100k in the first 6 weeks. No Treloar will have major impact on his HTA and its the same hammy that left the bone previously so I don’t see him playing first 2 or 3. Rnd 1 nobody knows what English is like this year, yet, but if Pittonet could match Reg around the ground a dramatically improved English might slow him as well he certainly wont be getting 50 HO like l/y plus those doggy mids will steal a few. Rnd2 should be a walkover for him Rnd3 more unknowns has he played against Ceglar b4? Rnd4 he only ave 110 in last 3 games against them Rnd5 Port Reg only scored 108 against l/y in a crushing win Rnd 6 Bombers and his top score V Phillips is only 85 in a JLT game.
Long way from a lock at his price unless he rips Marshall a new one this week.
OK maybe suggesting a 100k drop in 6weeks is a bit much but I’m fairly confident that his drop plus Jacobs rise in 6weeks will total well over 100k
