Team Reveal – Motts

Written by Motts on March 3 2020

Remaining Salary: $64,600

The Maulers@SCT are a side that has achieved a modicum of success over the years through dumb luck and pure rat cunning.

With the annual goal of taking out my cash league, I have achieved that feat in 3 of the last 5 years and was the runner up in 2019 (because I didn’t have Max Gawn and he went Coco Bananas in the GF – I won’t be making that mistake again).

The 2020 version of the team has been based on a few factors:

  • “More midfield time”
  • Marsh Series form
  • Not facing a hard tag in the first few rounds
  • Opportunism (ie they were too cheap to overlook)
  • Previous seasons’ scoring ability

Standard disclaimers apply around rookies and injuries prior to Round 1.

Happy to answer any questions about it. All constructive criticism will be considered. All other criticism will be disregarded.

    1. Quite like the structure but I think there’s a really good chance that the of the 5 rookies in your back line 4 wont play R1.

  1. I think your side should change drastically over the next week when you see what kind of rookies will be debuting. Greaves, Ash, Budarick are probably worth a look, but we will see.

As for your premiums, Wingard for Stevens is a move I would consider. While Stevens has averaged 100-110 before, I think he is probably too old now. Wingard will have more midfield time and I expect him to go back to averaging 100 like he has done before.

Coniglio is a risk I believe could pay off.

Martin I’m not so sure about, but he seems ingrained in your team structure.

    1. Thanks Findog. I just don’t see how Wingard is going to increase his average with Titch returning, Worpedo blossoming, and Jaeger dominating. He’s a pass for me.

Steven may go before R1 pending his preseason scores. He may be old but he’ll be happy in a new environment and in my book that counts for a lot.

Same applies to Jack Martin. I was keen on him before but his ppm in his first PS game locked him in for me.

    2. I’ve been crunching some number on the mid price forward & went in thinking Wingard might be a good option & came out thinking it’s extremely unlikely that he averages over 92, his DE% is abysmal when he’s running through the midfield.

  2. After our last phone chat I was expecting Jack Newnes! Or did I just ruin your secret last minute shark move?

    1. Don’t get me wrong, Hutta, I truly rate the guy. I just don’t know if he makes our best 18 at the moment!

  3. I would consider swapping Dusty for a D1.

This would move Hill to the forwards and give you your DPP swing with Brander.

If you feel Dusty will start to pick up steam in the second half of the season, then you may get him cheaper later. Also, if Whitfield goes down, then bring Dusty in.

I am also not a Steven fan. Has not had a proper preseason and role is unclear. I personally feel some of the emerging underpriced candidates at around the same price offer better value.

    1. Like my post above on Wingard, crunched some numbers on Steven & he’s always need high possessions to score well & I just can’t see him getting more than 25 a game, 23K extra go for Acres with a defined wing role & a guaranteed possession increase on previous seasons.

  4. Very nice team except personally I’m not solid on the forwards, we need to see what Steven can do in the next marsh hit out!

Also as good as jack martin looked for the half he played his history suggests he won’t go near premo status, so incredibly ballsy move, but could pay off.

    Good luck in 2020!

    1. Motts supports Carlton so say no more where Jack Martin is concerned. Perhaps letting personal influences dictate that choice I reckon.

  5. Big fan of this structure. Am also looking to go deeper in the forward line and with speculative picks as well.

  6. I see you’ve been inspired by your beloved Carlton Football Club and left Cripps to carry your midfield lineup.

  7. I’d steer clear of Coniglio, Motts.

He’s slated for a 50/50 MID/FWD role this year. Plus, he’s got quite a low floor. Unlikely to finish Top 8.

    1. Gun Boat.

As allsaints has stated before. Don’t believe everything GWS sprouts. Regarding positioning ,injuries basically anything they’re full of sh*t. They’re ( like Sydney ) in such a shit fight just to get crowds through the door, they will tell the public what they “think” they want to hear. Never let the truth get in the way, when it comes to ticket sales. Last year Sydney repeatedly said Buddy was only a week away even though they new he was 3/4 at least!

Look ,Cogs may play more forward this year. ( apparently it lengthens careers WTF ) I’m thinking with Ward missing early and now Taranto going down…. Well it just seems they may need Cogs in the Middle more than before.

The main reason I’m not starting him is his durability.
If he stays fit he is a Bull and will score really well. Last year he had some low scores basically because the GWS midfield was riddled with injuries and I think Cogs played hurt. ( He always seems to have some sort of strapping ? )
Honestly I think he is priced very well, and with that nice late Bye could be a gem of a selection. You just want to hope his body stays together.
Its unlikely in my book, but its possible he could finish top 10
      Mid at years end.

  8. Nice team Motts.

Pretty risky running Doc, S Hill and all those rookies down back.

It does make for a killer Forward set up.

I love the J Martin Pick.
He was one of my two Breakout picks for this year. Rozee being the other.

Its really hard to pick either with Smith and Steven ( both cheaper and “proven” ) still in the mix.
Somehow you managed to fit them all in, and Whitfield and Dusty.

Have you hacked the system and upped your Salary cap!

No seriously, great team. lets hope those defensive rookies show up R1.
I also wanted to thank you for all you do for this great site. It just seems to be evolving all the time. I don’t know how you do it!

    1. Thanks FT! I’ll be honest with you mate, when Schwarz announced he was moving on I didn’t know if we’d be able to keep going but the support we’ve received has been tremendous. It’s certainly a group effort so thanks to the entire writing team and everyone else who makes running this site so easy.

      1. Amen to that brother.

This is the BEST SuperCoach site on the web. The mixture of pure Stats, and a deep knowledge of AFL… add to that, the “mostly ” friendly banter, and I couldn’t ask for more.

        Legends. 🙂

  9. Nice team Motts…some clear decisions made re def v fwds. My concerns are Stevens given his recent history…might have a good ppg average, but for how many games ?? I’m also avoiding Danger….reckon this might be his frog breakout year given his age, and declining average last year. Oliver for me….looks to be going in the other direction and about the same price.

Love to see how your final team compares.

  10. Must admit I’m not a fan of that team Mottsy, when I first viewed it I thought you’d have $450k in the kitty, till I saw your FWD line .. heavy on the mid-pricers… 3 of which I cant see giving you a decent return … I guess you’re not trusting the FWD rookies this year.
You’re back line is so reliant on the rookies and Docherty doing well it is high risk.
I’m sure there’ll be a few mods before the season bounce down..I wish you the very best of luck

  11. I think your structure would work really well most years but this year there isn’t the rookie defenders that there normally is.

I’d definitely be swapping one of your premium forwards for a defender.

Unlike most here I really like the Steven pick, I think many have forgotten how good he is.

  12. Great write up Motts. You are doing a fab job for the site and we are grateful to the people who work hard to keep this wonderful community going.
I like the team structure. The Rookies, I am sure like everyone else we need to see maybe one more JLT game for their JS.
Humm…Marsh series form? Where is the Bont??? and Petracca??

On a serious note, my only feedback is Cogs. There are currently too much value you know are candidate for top 8 Mids. I will go lighter forward to get in a Macrae, J.Kelly or Oliver instead.
