Team Reveal – Thommo

Written by Thommo on March 13 2018

Behold!

Yep, you have just visited Risky Town.

Population: Me.

Rucks

As many coaches have stated, the Ruck line and the Rookies often shape our overall teams and my team is no exception. The inclusion of Scott Lycett at R2 frees up a lot of cash and allows me to limit how many playing Rookies I have. If he knocks out a solid 70-80ppg average until the bye I am ahead of the game, if he gets injured in Round 1 I have a stinky donut which I can’t afford to upgrade.

Backline

Initially I had the solid combination of Laird, Hibberd and Hurley but I am concerned that Hurley is underdone and will be cheaper during the season. Shane Savage is a risk but Richo rates him and only dropped him because Savage was playing too defensively last season when the coach wanted him to be attacking. I can’t see Savage averaging poorly enough to really hurt me.

The same goes for Sicily: He will fluctuate wildly but should average above his price enough across the entire season.

Let’s wait and see on the rookies: If none are named Round 1 things could get interesting.

Midfield

I have toyed with removing Dangerfield from my starting line-up all season so I haven’t had to restructure much with his possible injury. My main concern right now is whether I should scrap Coniglio and Liberatore for Martin and Will Brodie to save myself possible trades later.

That is really likely to happen before Round 1

Forwards

This is where many teams will get funky this season. There are so many break-out contenders around, I was forced to beat a few back with a large stick.

While both may start the season slowly, Billings and Heeney will be top 6 forwards so I decided to cop a few poor scores to save trades later. After them I have considered Devon Smith, Petracca, Toby McLean and Mathieson. Right now, Petracca and McLean are leading but Smith could easily come back in for Petracca.

Christensen has recently been cut for Tom Bell because Bell seems likely to play higher up the ground and there are just no decent forward rookies.

Thoughts?

Go hard folks. Tell me where I am wrong, why I am wrong and how to fix the wrongness. Don’t be shy: I listen and I am very impressionable!

For the record, if I change my mind on Lycett, I will bring in Ryder or Goldstein by cutting a midfielder.

  1. Backs and miss look really solid, although not sold on Cogs.

Lycett is a huge, but somewhat acceptable risk. Smith, you’ll at least get what you paid for and if things go your way, more.

But I had to google whotf Crozier is! 😛

  2. With only 1k in the bank my first thought is to free some cash up somewhere, just for safety incase of injury. Just a small downgrade on Hurley would suffice as you said you aren’t confident on him.

Also you are talking about Tom Bell but why is crozier there?

  3. Some of your explanations dont match the team pictured, is that your most updated team? I’m also interested in Bell over Christensen but really unsure if either will be worthwhile.

    1. Mmm.. same here. There is always someone that we get sucked into because of the JLT. If I don’t know who the player is, I don’t touch them. Has Bell ever been known to be a high scoring Supercoach player? Or is it just a pre-season where he played decently? Not for me I don’t think.

PS. Then again, I said pretty much the same things about Clayton Oliver and Josh Kelly laat year so who knows? I might be way off!

      1. Bell has averaged around 90ppg in his Carlton days. Given the number of playing defensive rooks I might upgrade Bell to Smith and downgrade Sicily to a rookie.

      2. Bell had one good season, 2015, where he averaged around 90. After that, he went to Brisbane, and it’s been all downhill since.

If he can get some decent midfield time then he’ll probably be a good pick, but he’s a big risk.

  4. Sorry folks, my update didn’t save. Should be:
    Backs: Savage replacing Hurley.
    Mids: Liberatore replacing Kelly
Forward: Bell and Petracca replacing Crozier, Stephenson.

I’ll update the image later today.

    1. 6 mids is not enough for you Matteo? Only joking, I’m guessing you mean uber-mids and I have the same concern. I have already adjusted my team again to bring in Dusty.

      1. No where near enough. 9 is ideal with 8 guns and an average player on the bench for loopholes. Someone that’s almost a premium but not quite. Perhaps Cripps would be good for that role 😉

  5. I would be worried about Lycett too big a risk if he goes down early. I think the move to Ryder would be a better option.

    1. Yep, Cameron seems unlikely to be a decent back-up so I think I will bring in one more premo ruck. I don’t think I can afford Ryder thougb.

    1. Definitely wasn’t happy with Bell, Sicily or Lycett. I’ll sit down on teamsheet night and overhaul the whole thing.
