The Collingwood List – Forwards

Written by Motts on January 25 2012

In his final piece on his beloved Pies, Bender analyses the Forward players and gee, haven’t they got some depth. Once again I’d like to thank Bender for his magnificent work in getting this analysis done. I, for one, am truly grateful.

If anyone else wants to analyse their team and thinks their writing is up to the standard presented here then I’d love to hear from you. Mail it to me at motts@supercoachtalk.com.

Dayne Beams ($546,400, 100.79, 14) – Laser had an up and down season in 2011, playing his fewest games so far in his career after being dropped mid-year. He came back in emphatic fashion scoring 179 in his return game. He flies under the radar a bit in a star-studded midfield. A handy mid-forward option.

Travis Cloke ($529,800, 97.73, 22) – Cloke dominated the air last season, grabbing 85 contested marks during the H&A rounds, the most ever and 35 more than his closest rival. Cloke improved his 2010 scoring accuracy by 11% last season with his set shot accuracy improving from 46% in 2010 to 60% last season. He’s a genuine superstar of the game and only 25 years old, so should also be entering his prime as a key forward. Should push that avg past 100 this year.

Chris Dawes ($427,200, 78.8, 15) Dawsey was another magpie to miss a chunk of the season through injury. Just 23 so is still developing, but with Cloke the main focal point up forward it means Dawes’ scoring is somewhat restricted. He can produce the odd high score as he showed in rounds 1 and 2 last season, scoring 140 and 110 respectively. The gap between his best and worst is just too much though at this stage of his career.

Alan Didak ($336,100, 62, 17) – This bloke has got to get a mention at that price. His average last year was down more than 40 points from 2010 (103.6). He tore his pectoral muscle from the bone in the 2010 Grand Final and was obviously hampered last preseason. He stayed home while his teammates travelled to Arizona for their annual high altitude training camp. With a full preseason under his belt this year, surely he can recapture the form that saw him as one of the most dangerous forwards in the competition. The only concern is the form of other small forwards, Jarryd Blair, Andrew Krakoeur and Alex Fasolo.

Jamie Elliot ($106,600) – Part of the trade with GWS that saw Marty Clarke arrive at the Pies, Elliot possesses extremely good hands for his size, with his marking a feature of his game. Fits Collingwood’s game plan to a tee as he is also an elite tackler, known for his forward pressure. He should play this year and release the likes of Sidebottom and Blair into the midfield. I don’t think he will play early though, so he looms as a good downgrade target during the year.

Alex Fasolo ($348,900, 64.36, 11) – Nathan Buckley wanted him to take the number 1 jersey vacated by Leon Davis, so indications are there that Fasolo is already one of Buck’s favorites. Should see more game time and less vests this year. If Swanny and Daisy stop giving him shit on Twitter, he may improve.

Steele Sidebottom ($452,400, 83.45, 22) – Was one of only four Collingwood players to play every game in 2011. He kicked the second-most goals of the top 10 ball winners at the club. As a midfielder his kick rating was elite and he was equally adept at using both feet, with 25% of his kicks coming on his non-preferred left foot, the fourth-highest percentage if the top 100 kick-getters in the comp. He has been running PB time trials since returning from Arizona and is primed for more midfield time in 2012. Get around him.

Well, there you go Motts. My take on this year’s Supercoach relevant Magpies players. I hope this can help a few people with their Collingwood selections, just as your write-up helped me with choosing Carlton players. And you’re absolutely right, it certainly does take a bit of time, but it’s all worth it when you know you’ve been able to help make someone’s decision a bit easier.

  2. Dayne Beams will be the next big thing at the pies. Expecting big things from him this year. Bigruss does not like Blair’s treatment of his boys inTeal.
