The Comprehensive Supercoach Preseason Post

Written by Motts on March 23 2012

Phew! Its been a busy preseason here on SC Talk. Hundreds of posts, thousands of votes, millions of comments, one troll.

Where do we start? Perhaps with team structure. This is how we set out the SCTTL team and I think its pretty solid. We also did a little midpricer poll which may help as well.

You may also want to consider how you’re going to handle the byes in Rounds 11, 12 & 13. Here’s a poll we did on it in early Feb. And this little widgety app thingy is very handy when looking at your team.

OK, so you’ve got your team structure and bye strategy sorted. Lets now start working on the players. First of all you’re going to need a permacaptain. We did two polls on this: one in mid January, one last week. The results didn’t differ too much.

One position down, 29 to go. Lets start down back with the Defenders. Which premiums should you be considering? This one got polled twice too: here and here.

On the midpricer front, we gave you a poll between the 2 most popular midpricers down back this year. We also did a little bit of work with the rookies.

We now move into the guts. A lot of this is going to come down to personal preference and we didn’t do a midfield premium poll because there’s simply too many options to choose from. If you’ve already got your permacaptain sorted, you really can’t go too far wrong with anyone priced over $550k.

But what about those blokes on the next level? We did a M/F DPP poll here and then again here. We also looked at the midpriced M/F DPP’s You may also want to have a look at BR&B’s analysis.

OK we’re over half way there. Lets now look at the Rucks. Here’s how everyone’s approaching their ruck strategy this year. Here are the most popular premiums. And here are the most popular rookies: Giles, Redden and Stephenson (there was no need to poll that one – check the NAB Cup results).

Only 9 spots to go and we head into the front line. Franklin, Fyfe and Martin are far and away the most popular forwards this year – evidence here. In the midprice position you could grab one of the M/F DPP’s mentioned above or you could have a look at either of these fellas.

For the forward rookies, check out Big Sexy’s analysis. Actually, you can also check out what he did for the backs, mids and rucks too.

Are you hyperlinked out yet? Motts is.

The final hyperlink I’m going to give you is the keys to the kingdom. This is the team that hundreds of supercoach experts on our site voted for. If all you’re looking for is a team that is the culmination of thousands of hours of research by people who care about SC a whole lot more than you that will strike fear into the hearts of your opposition, THIS is what you want.

We really appreciate you dropping past the site. And we hope you stay throughout the season. There’s a lot to love about SC, one of the things being the banter that goes on in the Comments section of these posts. If tonight is your first night on the site, welcome! We don’t expect to see you again but we hope to. Hey, maybe one day you might even get involved in the banter 🙂

Good luck to all coaches this year and thanks once again for your support!

  1. Well done Motts and along with Duck & Big Sexy on a stirling job. It’s dedication like this that deserves a pat on the back and without the 3 of ya this site would not exist to supply the information that every supercoach looks to – to provide us with any relevant information that can get our team over the line round by round. To everyone else who contributes as well, your guidance is well worth received and the fun and banter between all is a highlight which makes this site so successful. So to all supercoachers good luck with your teams both Supercoach and the Club that you love and let’s hope it’s a belter of a year and may the best team win. Cheers Baz!

  2. Amazing how much changes in two months. The ruck strategy poll (21 Jan) gave the following results.

    2 premiums and 2 Rookies (42%, 167 Votes)
    1 premium, 1 mid price and 2 rookies (28%, 112 Votes)
    1 premium and 3 rookies (20%, 80 Votes)
    2 mid pricers and 2 rookies (5%, 20 Votes)
    4 rookies (5%, 15 Votes)

A quick scan of latest Rate My Team thread suggests this has changed dramatically. Its hard to find a team with two premium rucks in it.

I’ve been holding onto this strategy forever but feel I’m about to crack…

THUMBS UP – Anyone going with 2 premiums?
THUMBS DOWN – Get with the times Omen and go 1/3

  4. Motts, Duck and Big Sexy,

I think I speak on behalf of a lot of people in saying a big thank you for your efforts throughout the preseason and look forward to a great forthcoming season, you’re advice, information, polls are fantastic for a first year coach or a seasoned coach..

  5. Lock out cheat 2. Think this will work
Make your GWS Emergencies. This does rely on someone not playing.
I have A Hall who may not play for Gold Coast I have on the ground. Now Dfieffer and Kennedy on the Bench Kennedy has an E. If Kennedy scores well I will leave Hall on the ground, if he scores poorly I will put Dfieffer on and Sub Hall.
    Think that makes sense.

  6. You have to make sure you pick someone not picked.
Which makes it hard as we all probably have everyone playing this week.
But in my Team Hall a 50/50 and Possible Magner, If they do play stuffs it all up. You need to have someone who is not in week 1.

  9. Thanks again for your efforts guys.
The beauty of this site is that you enable ALL posters to feel they have earned a level of ownership for its success, whether we be seasoned campaigners or newbies. This was clear for all to see last night when we were trolled (I thought I had logged on to DTTalk) and everyone stuck by one of our regulars.
The diversity of sophisticated, robust debate and assistance to novice SC coaches in a respectful (albeit sometimes with a witty tone of hubris) manner is unique within this environment IMO.
I think it is therefore important we also pay tribute to the regulars that have supported this relatively fledgeling site over the years (you know who you are) to make it what it has become.
Good luck to Motts, BS and Duck with their ongoing partnership negotiations with the Herald Sun and more to the point, to all SC coaches for2012.

    go the mighty eagle,s 🙂

  10. No doubt someone will feel the urge to say this is the wrong thread to post this in but hey, if its The Comprehensive Supercoach Preseason Post, what could possibly be out of place in here?

For all of those who’ve just read the (above) confirmation that the SCT Master has abandoned his 1/3 ruck strategy in favour of a Mum/Cox Combo Deal (and subsequently gone into pulmonary cardiac arrest), here’s how you might go about emulating this marvellous feat.

Either, copy and paste the SCTTL team and use it for your T1 line up or, dare to be different and copy the following. I really don’t mind sharing my hours and hours of online, crowd-sourced, purloining with you, all and sundry.

Goddard, Scotland, Deledio, Broughton, Clarke, Ellis, Bugg,
    Smedts, Morris

Ablett, Murphy, Selwood, Coniglio, Shiel, Magner,
    Kerridge M/F, Neale

    Cox, Mumford
    Giles, Redden

Franklin, Goodes, Fyfe, Martin, Porplyzia, Smith D, Pfeiffer,
    Kennedy A, Dickson

Use the spare $59,700 in the bank to put your own little smudge on the teamsheet before final lock out and you’re ready to rock!

Good luck to all SuperCoaches in 2012.

  11. Good luck everybody. Leaving my rucks as a 1/3. First 3 rounds are for no points. Big gamble I know but hopefully reddon can salute with the 3 fingers.

  12. Good luck to all the SCT Gang as game time approaches!!!!!

Hopefully we have the 50k winner from this site this year which wouldn’t be surprising at all with all the knowledge and guidance that’s thrown around!!!!

Motts , BS & Duck I echo the sentiments of all the above posts…Another terrific pre season, thank you, and look forward to the year ahead !!!!!

  13. What a fantastic website! SCT is the best place to get all your supercoach info. Last year i stumbled upon SCT by pure accident & discovered that there were hundreds of supercoach tragics just like me.

Seasons before I had to rely on myself to get the research done and the fact I couldn’t share my thoughts & theories made it hard to know if I was making the right decisions or not.

Now thanks to SCT, I got my best overall ever, highest weekly ranking ever, won all my league finals & at one stage was 11th overall in the competition. There’s no way that all of the above would’ve happened if I didnt come across this site.

It probably sounds like I’m doin an SCT infomercial but I honestly believe that this place will help any coach become a better player & the daily contributors (HGL, gimmeguitars, PA, Omen, juddy, THC, Catta, Deano, Scatts, Davo, MJ, Barry Kraft etc) are better experts than anything Shane Crawford, Jay Clark or Al Patton has to say. The topics, polls & discussions throughout SCT are pretty awesome & any first timer here will get plenty out of this.

So thanks Motts, Big Sexy & Duck for all the great work you’ve put into this site….
I’ll be a SCT member for life (or until HS starts charging us $29.99 for supercoach)

  14. Big ups to Motts, the Big Sexy & the Duck from this appreciative punter for all this wonderment that we call SCT.
Big shout outs to all you regular peeps that add depth, frivolity & information to the aforementioned site.
Big apologies to all of you that have been silly enough to follow the SC advice of a Collingwood supporter. HGL actually knows nothing about this caper and any advice offered by him should always be studiously ignored.
This site is a bloody ripper.

  15. Hey guys so excited the footy’s nearly ready to rock n roll and it starts tonight heres some lyrics from a old Greg Champion classic.
Ive got my scarf, got my old coat
I’ve got a footy game to go to
    Footy’s on footy’s here again
Back to greet me like an old friend, and
    CHORUS
    That’s the thing about
    Thats’s what i like about
    That’s the thing about
    The thing about football

I’ll meet a friend outside the ground
    we’ll argue who’s gonna win
He’ll go for his team i for mine
we’ll watch em slug, it out right to the end, and (CHORUS)

Show me the crowd and i’ll take my place
I’m hungry, hungry for the taste of it and (CHORUS)

I got a long road to walk down
To catch a train to my favourite ground
Use my legs, use my voice
Make some noice support the boys, and (CHORUS)

That’s what football means to me
That’s how i like my footy to be, and ( Back to the Chorus)

  18. Once again echoing the sentiments of everyone in praising the tireless efforts from Motts, Duck and Big Sexy. The difference that all your thoughts and opinions made to my team last year was phenomenal. Hoping this year that BRaB will enlighten us even more with his in depth knowledge and also cause he’s a dons supporter. Get him on the payroll! Good luck all in 2012! cheers

  21. well, it’s safe to say I have spent many hrs arguing with the mrs since SC opened up again this yr, but u know what, it’s been well worth it. I don’t leave a lot of comments or feedback, but do spend a heck of a lot of time reading through your forums and comments. great site guys, love your wrk.. you kinda give us an edge over our mates/opponents that don’t know about this site.. (i’d tell em bout it, but, u know, it’s our secret lol) great work lads..

  22. Everyone content with having Ahmed Saad in their lineups? His NAB scoring was pretty ordinary. Third lowest in the whole St Kilda list in terms of points scored per minute. Not that there’s many other forward gems out there.

Currently running with Smith, Saad, Hall, Kennedy, Dickson (Pfeiffer in mids).

  23. Just dropping by to wish everyone good luck for the new SC season!

I have a query though, how will the lockout work in Round 1? GWS and Sydney play tonight, yet we have to wait another 5 days to see the rest of R1’s action. Would greatly appreciate if someone could clear this all up for me!

  42. Hi guys,
Fairly new to S/C. Thank god for this ripping site.
Just a quick question, Why is there no love for N.Dal Santo?
5th ranked player in s/c for 2011, with an average just under 120.
Scored well in the brownlow and has a fairly good draw until his bye (port, g/coast twice, melb). Even the H/S didn’t mention him in their last minute cheat sheet.
    Can anyone shed any light?

    Cheers jase66

  43. Whats everyones thoughts on Simon Hogan
Only $162K and been banging out very decent scores in NAB Cup and played 4 out of 5 games.
Word is he will be Lingy’s replacement (tagging)
Will be lead to the ball a lot, good JS by the sound of it?

  48. I have Neale sitting on the bench expected in Rd 2.
That means I can play both the Captain Loophole and the GWS Emergency Work Around.

    Shiel M7 (E)

    Mumford (V)

If Shiel smashes it, put Neale on the field next week to get the E points from Shiel.

If Mumford smashes it (130+), put the C on Neale next week.

If Neale plays next week, no big deal, put the C on Ablett. Lose the E points from Shiel but gain the pts from Neale.

  49. Hi SCT. My mate just told me about this site. Its my first year at playing SC and I have no idea what I’m doing so really really need your help. I have just one quick question for you gurus.

    Thumbs Down – Clay Smith
(both worry me about the vest)
Im thinking Smith might play Callan Wards role as that tough onballer type player, but not sure how much game time he will get.
Also, Shiel hasnt played any NAB cup games
    Help please….
