The Fallen Premiums – Rd 11, 2020

Written by Chillo on August 8 2020

The clear focus this week will be on bringing in players who are fresh off the bye and ready to charge towards the finals without interruption. There are some fantastic options amongst this group, particularly in the midfield, and once again the biggest battle may well be deciding who not to bring into your team. Here are the Fallen Premiums!

DEFENDERS

Rory LAIRD (ADE), $481 700 (-$44.1K), avg 93, BE 77 – The normally prolific Laird has been down on his usual form this season, currently sitting tenth among defenders for scoring aggregate. But if you’ve been watching closely, you’ll have noticed that Rory has been moved into the Crows’ midfield in the past fortnight with good results, including 120 in his most recent game against the Dees. With Adelaide well and truly into a rebuild, Nicks may decide to keep the ever reliable Laird in a central role and move the other puzzle pieces around him while he looks for the best combination. Laird’s scoring history is of course excellent, with a career best of 108 ppg coming just two seasons ago.

Just quickly – Tom Stewart ($458 500, avg 89, BE 63) didn’t deliver the swag that his new owners would’ve been hoping for last week, but I expect that was an anomaly and he is still a good choice for your backline this week.

Backing it up….
Caleb Daniel, $536K, BE 137

MIDFIELDERS

Tom MITCHELL (HAW), $568 800 (-$62.1K), avg 114, BE 75 – A former Brownlow medallist and Supercoach legend, available fresh off the bye, with a price tag of less than $570K. No hard sell required here – if you’ve got the cash to do it, Titch is a very safe and wise choice this week. Just starting to wind up after a long injury layoff and has a ceiling that few other players can even see, let alone touch. Jump on now and enjoy the steady stream of points that come your way every time the Hawks take the field!

Patrick CRIPPS (CAR), $488 500 (-$147.4), avg 102, BE 70 – Has spent a lot of the season getting beat up around the stoppages, but the Blues champion is as resilient as he is talented and is now available at an irresistible price for the few of you who don’t yet have him in your midfield. One of the great contested ball beasts of the past decade, Cripps bounced back from a lean spell with 149 (19 contested possessions) in his last game, and like Mitchell he has had the bye to refresh and recharge.

“Boots” doing what he does best.

Luke SHUEY (WCE), $488 100 (-$60.1K), avg 99, BE 48 – Here’s a slightly more left-field option, but looking at the numbers the 2018 Norm Smith medallist is actually a very intriguing prospect this week. Shuey suffered a hamstring twinge early on against the Swans in round 5, but if you can ignore that game then he is averaging a smidge over 110 points this year. That is elite scoring in anybody’s language, and with the Eagles set to play a majority of their remaining games at Optus Stadium, Shuey might be the smoky you need in your midfield to give you the edge over your rivals in the run home.

Just quickly – Tom Rockliff ($465 900, avg 95, BE 44) has scored 103 and 134 since he returned to the Port midfield. I’m just saying.

Limbo land….
Josh Kelly, $624K, BE 166
Nat Fyfe, $588K, BE 158
Adam Treloar, $569K, BE 146
Josh Dunkley, $596K, BE 141

RUCKS

Brodie GRUNDY (COL), $592 700 (-$18.8K), avg 126, BE 92 – Brodie is already in two thirds of all teams so you’ve probably already got him locked into your ruck division. If not, here’s a rare opportunity to pick up one of the elite scorers in Supercoach history for less than $600K. Faces Adelaide this round who are giving up plenty of points. Don’t wait.

Todd GOLDSTEIN (NTH), $578 000 (-$22.5K), avg 125, BE 106 – Alternatively, you could go with the Shinboners’ warhorse who just keeps getting better and better. Big Goldy was rated the number one player in the comp at one stage this year according to the official AFL player ratings, and at only 7% ownership he is the POD to end all PODs in 2020. As an added bonus he faces a banged-up Gawn this weekend and there could scarcely be a better time to do that, with Max struggling along through injury and rookie Luke Jackson taking a fair share of the ruck duties. Goldy might enjoy the thought of competing with that pair right now!

Timberrr…..
Max Gawn, $721K, BE 240
Tim English, $531K, BE 177

FORWARDS

Due to the large number of “successful” midpriced picks in the forward line this year (think Greenwood, Petracca, Simpkin), there aren’t many viable Fallen Premiums to speak of here in the forward line. I will point out that Lachie Whitfield has hit a hot streak recently and if you don’t have him for some reason, you should definitely aim to pick him up after his bye next week.

Forward thinking….
Hugh Greenwood, $526K, BE 149
Christian Petracca, $607K, BE 135

  2. Yep same with mine it’s currently taking all scores not just top 18. On another note , not that he’s a premium but is Conor Rozee worth a look

    1. IMO Rozee is definitely worth a look.
Stick him on your bench and if he pulls out a big score then loophole him.
You know his JS is solid and he only needs a couple of injuries to PA mids and he will get far more midfield time

  3. Hoping someone can help me split Titch and Tim Kelly.

Both have now had their bye, Titch slightly more expensive with a marginally higher 3 and 5 rd average, Kelly the POD.

    Torn.

    1. Simpkin is a no brainer for sub-400k. Even if he only averages 85 from here-on out, you’ve still got your money’s worth. Would make a handy F5/6.

  5. Concern for Shuey getting tagged by Curnow this week? Or is it more likely he goes to Gaff? I don’t watch enough of either side to get a feel for the likely match up

    1. Blues didn’t use Curnow as a tagger when they played they Hawthorn recently, and ended up letting Titch do his thing.

If they didn’t tag a Brownlow Medallist, surely they leave the Eagles MIDs alone?

If not, he would probably tag T. Kelly imo.

  9. Is it more important to get Cripps or Simpkin in this week? I’ll be getting both within the next 2 weeks but i want to maximize cash, who more likely to gain more cash this week?
    T/U: Cripps (BE=70 vs Eagles)
    T/D: Simpkin (BE=81 vs Dees)

    1. Cripps has a much higher ceiling, but is more likely to cop attention from Yeo.
Even if Simpdaddy tons, he won’t go up by too much anyway. He can always wait til next week.
