The Hawthorn List – Defenders

Written by Motts on February 12 2012

In his final piece on the Hawks, D Mac gets down and dirty with the blokes down back who make life hell for opposition forward lines.

Thanks once again, D Mac, for putting the effort into these posts. Hope they’ve helped everyone and please address any questions to D Mac below in Comments. I’m sure he’ll be happy to answer ’em.

Grant Birchall – $509,600, 94, 21

“Birch” was back to his rebounding best last year, playing in 21 games & avg 94. Good solid choice that will back up each week. I can’t see his avg getting much better but he’s reliable & an avg like that in the backline is more than handy.

Matt Suckling – $492,000, 90, 20

โ€œSuckers” is another young player that stepped up for the Hawks in 2011. He’s young, confident & desperate to cement himself in the Hawks backline. Played 20 games last year and avg 91, I expect that avg to jump this year after another solid pre-season. Good choice for any backline.

Xavier Ellis – $432,300, 79, 8

Struggled with multiple injuries in 2011, only played 8 games with a 79 avg. Clarko recently quoted as saying “his really solid summer with no interruption from injury makes us really confident that he’ll enter the senior side and play some consistent footy for us in 2012” Now fit & firing, I think he should really preform for us this year & hopefully deliver some good SC scores.

Jarrad Boumann – $113,200

Clarko was recently quoted as saying “We’re keen to get Jarrad into our system to add some support to our back-end – if he can put together back-to-back games for Box Hill (which he will), he’ll definitely be able to put himself into contention for senior side selection this year” Positive signs. Played 19 games last year for box hill, ranked #1 for spoils and ranking 2nd at the Hawks for marks & rebound 50’s (which clarko will love!) Was on the Doggies list for 3 years but never debuted. Nothing to worry about though, being a key defensive back meant it has taking him a lot longer to adjust to the rigors of senior footy. Watch NAB cup form. Took some great contested marks in the Hawks intra club game.

  1. On your advice I’m going with the Pig (Suckling). Last year I recall he had some minor knee complaints so I hope that has cleared up for season 2012!

  2. Xavier Ellis injured his ankle in their praccy match down in Launceston. Poor fella, it always seems that he’s injured. I’m just so glad the Pies picked Thomas ahead of him in the 2005 draft.

  3. Or Burgers. Did you write up Burgers, D Mac? Let me guess. “Tearing the training track a new one and will be cherry ripe come Round 1. Don’t even watch him in the nab Cup, lock him in now.”

  4. Good to see Boumann getting some games.
    Was picked again this week.
    Keep your eyes on him.
Could be a good POD rookie.
