The Hawthorn List – Forwards

by Motts on February 12, 2012

In the 6th of our series of team previews from a fan’s perspective, today one of SCT’s most regular contributors, D Mac, brings you The Mighty Hawks. Thanks go to Macca for putting the time into this.

They’re a happy team at Hawthorn and I’ll tell you why: its because they’ve got very few holes across the ground with the return from injury of a number of players. To me, they’re the team everyone has to beat to win the 2012 flag.

But enough of the flag talk, lets get onto D Mac’s analysis starting with the Hawks’ very strong forward division.

Jarryd Roughead – $550,000, 101, 11 (Ruck)
Is back training with the main group, recovery is coming along better than expected. As far as I can tell Hawks are trying to keep it under wraps. Should be eased into the season so may be a good upgrade target. Although I worry about his numbers, they won’t risk him in the ruck again so his avg may drop. Watch closely.

Cyril Rioli – $540,100, 99, 16

“Junior” has been training the house down. According to Clarko & Cyril they have finally perfected his running technique & he is ready to go. He has been flagged for more midfield time, same was said last year but with injury concerns it never worked out. 2012 is his year. With the forward options we have this year he could definitely find a home in plenty of sides. Was one of the best in the Hawks intraclub game in tassie.

Lance Franklin – $600,600, 110, 19

I’m not going to bullshit you here: GET ON HIM! Fitter than ever, no girlfriend to worry about, spends plenty of time up the ground. Should top 2011 avg of 110 and maybe even take it up another notch. Played majority of intraclub game in the midfield. Great signs!

Jack Gunston – $302,700, 55, 12

I’ve only put him on here after his performance in the intraclub match. Awkwardly priced at 302k. Hawks were chasing him as far back as the 09′ draft. With Buddy up the ground more I could see “Norm” getting plenty of games and kicking plenty of goals. Avg only 56 last year expect that to rise with some game time this year.

Tom Schneider – $113,200

Still on the rookie list but has impressed all pre-season. Definitely one to keep your eye on over the NAB cup and early season.

You have to be kidding Scatts, apart from young Thommy S, these players would line up in 90% of forward lines in the competition!

GGrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! A huge ” worthy” Thumbs down to you Scatts!

There’s little doubt that they can all play some decent footy Catta, but I have to agree with Scatts on this one. Buddy will be the first picked in 99% of forward lines this year. After that Hawthorn has very little to offer Supercoaches up front. Roughead is coming back for a serious achillies injury and thus has had a limited preseason. Sizzle has hamstrings made out of fairy floss and by all reports will remain forward this year. And Gunston, well there are plenty of better mid-priced players than Gunston (Brown, Christensen, Didak, Porps just to name a few).

Which Hawthorn forwards are “worthy” of a spot in Catta’s Clan.

Buddy & Rioli Bender, but we cannot put too many of the same team’s players in one’s side…….for team balance of course! I still think Norman at $302 has some upside for a F5, where I rate J Brown an under priced Premium, Didak well what can one say
(2010) may of been nothing but a fluke & Porps….even Adelaide supporters bag him on a yearly base, ( Christensen…….I accept, he’s a potential gun ). As for Roughie he is flying & with all reports coming out of the club, he will be eased in to the 1st 1-3 rounds & then, they will cut him loose to do he’s thing!

Furry Muff. I’ve had Rioli for the last two years and delicious isn’t the only adjective I’ve used for him. He’s an excitement machine and has the ability to score the same amount as Sam Mitchell but with half the touches. Unfortunately he has burnt me in the past due to injury, so once bitten, twice shy. But that didn’t stop me picking him last year now, did it?

This brings me to another point that I was thinking about earlier. Often players that “burn” coaches are put onto the “never again” list. Once they let you down, you feel a certain resentment towards that player. However, the following year that player may be totally over his injury, play all 22 games and lift their avg by 20 points. There was a thread on all those players that massively let you down in the past. The only reason why I’m hesitant in selecting him is because he’s let me down in the past. I will now move him from the never again list to the consider list.

Well howdy Scatts…………mate Bender mentioned in his last line of his post that he’s actually going to take Rioli off he’s never again list & is putting him back on the “Consider” list. He’s a very astute SCT coach!

Don’t worry about Junior, although he’s taking little strides these days which I believe will help his hammy’s from going ” Twang”, he’s got smoke coming from his footy boots when he takes off

Awesome clip, very funny Scatts…..but don’t forget this..

I’m not a Hawk fan but if you don’t have Buddy in your team you can not win! Buddy to smash the all time record this year and when I have him as el’ capitan!

I like the reports out of the Hawks and I am considering Rioli in my team for the first time ever. I just think they may manage those injuries better this season.

Just managed to summon the courage to get Sizzle in for the first time this week myself.

When he averages just under a ton floating in and out of games and getting 15-17 touches what will happen when he finally gets to stay in the middle and racks up 25? That can easily translate to a 120+ average.

Hope 2012 is the year for my SC team and more importantly for the mighty Hawks!!

If you don’t got Buddy in your team, you might as well give up and take up knitting or something. In fact, add Sizzle to that as well. Averaged 100 with dodgy hammies albeit for only 16 games. His hamstring issues might be over. Could go bananas this year. Well worth the risk imo.

P.S. Nice touch with the spelling and stretchy box thingy Motts!

King of the Internet Duck made a couple of changes over the weekend. You can now edit your comments up to 5 mins after posting them. Good work, Duck.

Is there any chance you could ask Duck to see if he can make these functions work on the iPhone? The edit box comes up after pressing edit but deleting or adding does not work. Thanx.

I never use mobile theme as replies to posts are not shown under that post, it just gets added to the bottom of the page. But I just tried to turn Mobile Theme ON and could not find that option anymore.

Can this edit feature extend to 20minutes on Friday and Saturday nights after 11pm when Omen’s had one too many and he’s sitting at his computer frothing at the mouth over the poor showing of his SuperCoach team?? :)
