The Hawthorn List – Forwards

Written by Motts on February 12 2012

In the 6th of our series of team previews from a fan’s perspective, today one of SCT’s most regular contributors, D Mac, brings you The Mighty Hawks. Thanks go to Macca for putting the time into this.

They’re a happy team at Hawthorn and I’ll tell you why: its because they’ve got very few holes across the ground with the return from injury of a number of players. To me, they’re the team everyone has to beat to win the 2012 flag.

But enough of the flag talk, lets get onto D Mac’s analysis starting with the Hawks’ very strong forward division.

Jarryd Roughead – $550,000, 101, 11 (Ruck)
Is back training with the main group, recovery is coming along better than expected. As far as I can tell Hawks are trying to keep it under wraps. Should be eased into the season so may be a good upgrade target. Although I worry about his numbers, they won’t risk him in the ruck again so his avg may drop. Watch closely.

Cyril Rioli – $540,100, 99, 16

“Junior” has been training the house down. According to Clarko & Cyril they have finally perfected his running technique & he is ready to go. He has been flagged for more midfield time, same was said last year but with injury concerns it never worked out. 2012 is his year. With the forward options we have this year he could definitely find a home in plenty of sides. Was one of the best in the Hawks intraclub game in tassie.

Lance Franklin – $600,600, 110, 19

I’m not going to bullshit you here: GET ON HIM! Fitter than ever, no girlfriend to worry about, spends plenty of time up the ground. Should top 2011 avg of 110 and maybe even take it up another notch. Played majority of intraclub game in the midfield. Great signs!

Jack Gunston – $302,700, 55, 12

I’ve only put him on here after his performance in the intraclub match. Awkwardly priced at 302k. Hawks were chasing him as far back as the 09′ draft. With Buddy up the ground more I could see “Norm” getting plenty of games and kicking plenty of goals. Avg only 56 last year expect that to rise with some game time this year.

Tom Schneider – $113,200

Still on the rookie list but has impressed all pre-season. Definitely one to keep your eye on over the NAB cup and early season.

  2. I’m not a Hawk fan but if you don’t have Buddy in your team you can not win! Buddy to smash the all time record this year and when I have him as el’ capitan!

  3. I like the reports out of the Hawks and I am considering Rioli in my team for the first time ever. I just think they may manage those injuries better this season.

  4. If you don’t got Buddy in your team, you might as well give up and take up knitting or something. In fact, add Sizzle to that as well. Averaged 100 with dodgy hammies albeit for only 16 games. His hamstring issues might be over. Could go bananas this year. Well worth the risk imo.

P.S. Nice touch with the spelling and stretchy box thingy Motts!
