The Rucking Dilemma

Written by Big Sexy on March 2 2011

First off, I need to say my theory seems to be different to that of most when it comes to the Ruck Bench. I have always been an advocate of not putting too much cash in your ruck area…… in particular the bench. However, this season is different:
1. You now have a bye that will impact your R1 and R2 at some stage. So you need backup and can’t afford a zero.
2. You now have an extra bench spot for you Fwd, Mid and Back, but not your Ruck.
3. Everyone knows Rucks take time (years) to develop, so it is unlikely you will get a first year ruck rookie on your bench who provides good cover…. for Bye’s and short-term injury.
4. You wont be wanting to waste trades on you ruck area if you can help it.

I see from the “Rate My Team” post the ruck bench is typically made up of Smith and Derickx, or a subsidy combination with Redden, Cordy, McCauley, Campbell, Bailey.

However….. I think that given you can have Petrie ($216k) or Fraser (237k) who are guaranteed starts with their respective teams, bigger conditioned bodies, for about an extra $100k…. I think it’s a handy insurance policy.

Tell me what do you think?

For what it’s worth I currently have Cox, Jolly, Petrie and Derickx (changed Fraser to Petrie today after previously locking Fraser)…… However, if Robbie Campbell actually gets a run and goes ok, he may be the exception.

  1. Petrie looked like a great option but now hes gone and got himself suspended and the bye he’s lost that appeal completely.

Yet supercoach gold has him rising in value by 200+k over the season….Is he worth the punt??? i dont know….at the moment

I had him as a lock with sandi but now i dont know what to do.

Ive got bailey and campbell on the bench who should both see some game time.

About my best option as far as i can see is having mummy and someone like goldstein or maric. or cox & brogan.

The other option is to keep sandi and and have mark blake or someone like that, wont score big but will play most games and score something.

    What do you guys think?
How would you spend 776k on 2 ruckman?

  2. In short, i wouldn’t spend 776K on two ruckmen.

The way i see it, with the new interchange rule, teams will be reluctant to bench ruckmen as they will need to rest fatigued midfielders. Rucks will, like they did in the 60’s, rest in the fwd line (or a kick behind play). Some rucks, like Big Sandi, will get huge amounts of game time and in my opinion, will achieve greater SC scores across the season.

Therefore, my suggested ruck set up is to pick two gun rucks. I’ve gone Sandi and Jolly (Jolly’s average after Fraser got dropped mid last year was awesome), Smith from GC is a cheapie who will play which for R3 is a must and Campbell who may/may not play but is cheap.

Another option could be Joel Tippett in R4 and Petrie in fwd line which means you can swap Petrie into the ruck as injuries and byes occur.

Yes, Petrie isn’t playing Rnd 1 and 3 but look bigger picture and a 200K player who is likely to score 80-100pts each week is a steal.

  3. In fact, the more i think of the Tippett and Petrie theory the more sense it makes to me. Tippett at R4 instead of some other cheapie/chump is no real difference to your team structure and i’m currently thinking of picking Petrie in the fwd line anyway.

Off to the official website to make another change to my squad!!

  4. Like your thinking above.

I need to find my 4th cheap Ruck that will play. Is Z Smith a starter? or anyone else? as I missed the boat last year with this 4th R position.

  5. I’ve gone with sandi and jamar as both have supercoach byes with my r3 r4 changing frequently originally had Tippett and Petrie swapping up forward now have smith and Bailey as my ricks but by seasons start could be anything

  6. Always insightful Big Sexy. The change in this years comp throws a few spanners in the works unless you change your thinking from previous years. I like you never put much on the bench and even started with a pretty average second ruck man whilst trying to save some $$.

This year I’ll have to tackle it a bit differently.

Currently i have Sandi and Jolly with Smith and Derickx although that may change if i free up some $$ elsewhere.

  7. Cox and Petrie/KTipp (both DPP and will swap out whoever isn’t playing) with Campbell and Smith on the pine.

Still not 100% on that, but it’s looking more and more like that combo for me.

  8. For what it is worth I have gone for Hale in the forwards F7 and Petrie in the rucks. For Round 1 and 3, Hale will move into the rucks (I think he is a certain starter for hawthorn for at least the first 3 rounds barring injury) and will put Pertrie on the pine, hopefully one of my Rookies play. I just can’t see J.Tippett getting a game and if one of my forward rookies steps up and scores well, Hale will be good coverage on the bench.

  9. My problem with the rucks in my opinion is that they dont offer much room for upgrade down the path (bar the obvious Petrie Dish).

Why would I spend 320k on Todd Goldstein as my second ruck to Cox/Sandi, on the idea that he will see a bump in price with Macca out, when Andrew Gaff will probably average just as many points and at a price that will rise significantly more and quicker.

Having said that, I have no idea what Im doing and I may just downgrade elsewhere to include Ryder 😛

  10. Due to poor fund managment my ruck division is now
    cox & jolly
dericx and z.smith on the pine….cant afford to have sandi in there but cox is set for a big one i reckon.

  11. gone with j tippet in R4 to swap with petrie when needed,
    sandi, jolly and derickx
have never used a R4 in past years and petrie will cover that if needed!!

  12. No one’s going Cox and Sandi combo? Everyone seems to want to pump money into mdifields instead of paying the extra dosh for Cox – he’s gunna kill it.

  13. Gone with Sandi as R1 and Petrie as R2 after the McInstosh Injury – K. Tippett will swap w/Petrie and go into R2 from F5 for rounds 1 and 3… K.Tippett is covered by any of 3 (hopefully) playing rookies in the forward line… Then Zac Smith & Derrickx in R3 and R4

Out of the Crowsnest – there is a change of gameplan this year – long and direct to Tippett/Walker to beat the defensive press – so expect to see KT doing a of of mark/kick/goals this year – which is Supercoach gold… he can do no worse than last year…

  14. I’ve gone Sandi/Cox with Smith and someone else at R4.

But what does everyone think about seaby for R3 for those that are investing? Even if Mumford comes back, won’t the swans play both with Seaby going forward and mummy going a kick behind play?

1 more point in favour for seabiscuit, he registered a couple of hundred’s last year until he got injured and is only 26 – a good time for a ruckman.

I think might be a better option than fraser or petrie!
