The Run Home – Part ONE

Written by Schwarzwalder on July 25 2017

Welcome to ‘The Run Home’, where we take a look at the remaining fixtures of all eighteen clubs from our Supercoach point-of-view.  First six clubs to go under the microscope are:

Fixture: COLL(A), PORT, ESS(A), SYD, WCE(A)

Two trips to Melbourne and one to Perth in the remaining five weeks.  There might even be a Finals spot on the line for the Eagles in the last game which adds even more spice to a hot contest.  With the exception of Collingwood (and they’ve won their last two), each game is against a Top8 contender and possible Finals opponent.  If Adelaide finish as Minor Premiers then it will be well-deserved!

Gun: Rory Sloane – Despite run-ins with opposition taggers, he’s still the #8 scorer for the season.  Was averaging 124 before opposition Coaches decided to put the hard tag on Rory.

Smokey: Matt Crouch – Last Five Rd Avg of 123 and now $582k.  Main beneficiary of the hard tag on Sloane, Crouch is now 14th on the list of points scored in 2017.

Fixture: WCE(A), WBD, GCS, MEL(A), NTH

It’s going to be a tough game in Perth on the weekend without Zorko.  The Lions have shown a bit of promise for the future in recent times however.  With three of their final four at the Gabba, who’s to say they can’t produce another win or two?  Only one of their final five opponents is currently sitting in the 8.

Gun: Obviously Zorko will miss this weeks game but he is definitely their best player in 2017.

Smokey: Dayne Beams has been able to score well on occasion.  As is always the case however, Beams is slowed down by injuries.  If he stays fit for the last five weeks, Beams will produce some big numbers.

Fixture: GEE, ESS(A), WCE(A), HAW, SYD(A)

Apologies to the Top Brass at SCT (sorry Motts), but it’s hard to see Carlton winning another game in 2017.  Especially after their performance against Brisbane on the weekend.  Good news for us is that it doesn’t seem to affect their Supercoach scores too much.  So I’d still expect plenty from their elite performers (Kreuzer, Docherty & co).

Gun: Sam Docherty – Second only to Dangerfield in total points scored this season. Still managed 110 on the weekend despite being stuck on 10pts at Qtr Time.  I’m calling it now……..if Danger is the new Perma-Captain then Doc is the new Dependlebury moving forward.  Rarely plays a bad one………

Smokey: Bryce Gibbs – Was well held by Rockliff on the weekend to just 45pts.  Surprisingly Gibbs is 13th in overall pts for the year and is averaging 107.  With Cripps out, Gibbs is sure to see plenty of the ball before seasons end.  Massive POD with just 2.4% ownership.

Fixture: ADE, NTH(A), PORT(A), GEE, MEL

Only playing outside of Melbourne once in the last five weeks yet facing four teams currently inside the Top8.  Finals are only a mathematical chance but reality tells us it’s nigh-on impossible for the Pies, especially with Captain Pendlebury missing for the next few weeks (sorry PieFan….even with a fit and firing Braydon Maynard) 😉

Gun: Taylor Adams – Still perplexed how he managed to gain dual position status, but he’s proven to be a Top6 DEF nonetheless.  Has managed to stay injury-free and has been incredibly consistent.

Smokey: Steele Sidebottom – Only a 95 avg for the season but has gone 105 over the last five weeks.  Might be the one to benefit without Pendles in the side……

Fixture: WBD(A), CAR, ADE, GCS(A), FRE

This weeks game against the Bulldogs is, simply put……massive.  If the Bombers can get over the reigning Premiers then they can just about start planning for September football.  Only one interstate trip in the remaining five weeks and that is against the out-of-sorts Suns unit.  If they’re good enough then they’ll play Finals……..

Gun: Zach Merrett – Amazing how far he’s come over the last two years.  Even more amazing is that opposition Coaches give him so much room to move (nudge nudge wink wink…..MAN UP!).  Doesn’t stop running and just accumulates possessions at will……..

Smokey: Joe Daniher – With a decent run home, the scene is set for a few big games/scores/hauls from the big fella.  He’s one key position FWD that could go large in the coming weeks…….

Fixture: GWS(A), GCS, SYD(A), RIC, ESS(A)

Four of the last five games against current Top8 teams……..Giants, Swans & Bombers all away from home over the last five weeks…….Ouch!  Didn’t show much over the last two Rounds at home, it’s hard to see Freo winning more than one of their remaining games.

Gun: Lachie Neale – Followed up his breakout 2016 season with another rock-solid performance during 2017.  Currently the 7th highest points-scorer despite ‘just’ a 97 avg from the last three weeks.  Sure to go large again before the season is through…..

Smokey: Connor Blakely – Will cost you a smelly penny($561k) but is producing the goods of late.  With taggers heading to Neale and/or Fyfe, Blakely has been surfing…………….I mean, benefitting!  Has a 123avg over the last three weeks and is owned by just 0.5% of Coaches.

What do you make of the run home?  Are there any clubs to avoid in your opinion?

  1. I do not mind the fixtures of Brisbane and Essendon. While l love Zorko he is vulnerable to a heavy tag. I think I will target Merrett to replace Pendles.
