The TEAM 2017 – Walk Up Starts

Written by Schwarzwalder on March 6 2017

Anyone and everyone on the site can help shape the TEAM!

When looking at our ‘Rate My Team’ threads, there are a number of players that are consistently in the majority of teams.  Whether they’re returning from injury or simply a gun player (or both), the question needs to be asked whether these players get a ‘free pass’ into the TEAM for 2017.  Should they get a ‘walk-up start’ into the TEAM for RD1 and bypass the upcoming voting procedures?

Below are seven players to vote on for a guaranteed start in the TEAM in 2017.  If a player is successful but unavailable for RD1 (for whatever reason), they WILL NOT be taken in the final TEAM.  If they don’t win themselves a free pass into the TEAM, then these players will still appear in the regular voting procedure in the upcoming weeks.

Choose wisely, Coaches!  Who gets a walk-up start into the TEAM this year?

  1. Fyfe and Dahl qualify I think – the others probably come down to structure and competition with other similar priced players.

    1. I suspect both would get in, absolutely, but there’s justification for starting without them which should probably be opened up to the community.

Danger has a massive price tag, so there’s a case to be made that starting without him saves $120k+ that could be well used elsewhere.

Roughy looks a steal, but depending on structure he could be competing with guys like Wingard, Miller, Heeney, Ryder, Billings, Martin, Petracca, Nankervis or Hrovat for a “mid-priced forward” option.

Fyfe has the potential to be the number one player in the comp, and is priced under $600k. No brainer. Dahlhaus is the standout Mid/Fwd premium, surrounded by risky KPP’s or breakout contenders. Also a no-brainer.

Let the people decide, though 😉

      1. Yeah Roughys got way too much competition at his price to be a lock, but looks like you and I are in the minority, bloody democracy :p

        1. Haha, he’s a lock for me as well – but there will be some with other preferences. I don’t think any mid-pricer should be a walk-up-start in the community team given the structure needs to be determined.

If Swallow and O’Meara make the midfield, Bob Murphy sneaks into the backline and Sandi slots into R2 – do you want another midpricer up forward or do you go for the top end players? And if you’re taking a mid-pricer up there, is a DPP preferable to a one-position player?

Those are the questions that need to be asked.

    1. I see four primary ruck options this year – Gawn, Goldy, Grundy and Sandilands. Given there’s only two on-field spots, probably doesn’t hurt to poll for preferences.

    2. As it stands right now, we’re heading for a ‘set&forget’ set-up in the Ruck. I’m assuming that Gawn will be one of the players picked there.

    1. I’ve looked at what my team could be like with Nankervis; all the time thinking, “you cannot be thinking about this, you really can’t be thinking about this.” Sadly I am thinking about it. He even makes Sandilands look like an option, which without a good backup for me he would not be……aargh.

Looking a the results guys are either clearly in or out, which makes it easy. If someone only got 55% I’d not think they made it, as that is far from a consensus, but that seems to not matter looking at the votes so far.

      1. I’m in the same boat with Nankervis and Sandi. Taking both has done wonders for my midfield…Fyfe at M7…oooooh yeah.

          1. The team is down the bottom of the latest Rate My Team thread if you wanna take a gander.

Nankervis is at F3 to start, with that being my weakest line. Ideally he averages 90+ and finishes the year as a R3/F7 swingman, but if trades become tight he could potentially take F6.

With a super-deep midfield, I’d be hoping to blitz a heap of points early on, and snag the best available forward and defense options gradually as they bottom out.

  2. Personally I take durability into account for a ‘lock’. That’s why at the moment I don’t have Fyfe nor Dahlhaus in my team. Whereas even though JJK is erratic he’s durable and will finish near the top with aggregate.

    1. I agree with this I’m currently going without Fyfe. Not Dahlhaus though I think there are a lot less solid premium options in the forward line your going to have to take a risk not having him so you may aswell take the risk by having him. IMO

    2. Dahl has been super durable over his career – his knee injury last year is the first serious injury I can remember – he’s hardly Shaun Higgins!

  3. Great to see so many Coaches jumping on board to vote (250+!! Wow). O’Meara is a flip of the coin as it stands right now, going right down to the wire!
