The Top Job

by Duck on July 14, 2011

Back to league games for us all this week and with the possible exclusion ?? of Gary Ablett there’s going to be lot’s of us having to give the top job to someone else …. but who?

UPDATE: GAJ trained and looks like he’s going to play …. but do you risk it?

If I had Selwood I would be putting it on him. Must be angry and ready to pump out a 140+ game.

Swan for me with Collingwood winning by 50 points over the Blues without a forward or backline.

Very tough this week!

I usually avoid ‘Top of the table’ type clashes with two great midfields competing for the 3300 points. On average they will all be below par, too hard to pick which player will buck the trend.

Then you have Cox and McEvoy going head to head.

Not sure about Goodes or Pav.

GAJ against a struggling Tigers? Maybe best bet. Not sure!

In round 3 Pies v Blues, Judd was the highest scoring midfielder with 112, and he was 41st highest scorer for the round.

Can you remind me what happened last time the mighty Eagles fronted up at Etihad?
I’ve got two words for BJ: Adam Selwood;
and two words for Nicky Dal: Scott Selwood.

“Goddard has played the Eagles seven times since ’05 for a low of 93, high of 175 and average of 122. He has scored 175, 112 & 157 in his last three encounters against them (148 average). Goddard is averaging 129 from his last 26 games at Etihad Stadium.” (from YSCC)
Goddard for me!

Perfect example of why those YSCC captain pages are about as useful as a pub with no beer. Goddard played a dominant season in a dominant team last year and the Eagles won the spoon. Why anyone would even bother looking at those Saints v WC before this year confounds me. It is a meaningless comparison. Nothing personal Ollie.
Also, that YSCC guy’s record on picking captains is not great. In two weeks recently he had Franclin and Swallow as his top picks. I highly recommend ignoring him.

Ha ha, I know I am in the minority on historical stats being of marginal value, but I just don’t see how you can consider form against WC last year to be a good predictor of form against WC this year. They are two different teams.

Not sure what competition your referring to when you say “That’s not to deny that Goddard played well against them this year and may do so this week” as this is the first WCE vs SK game in 2011????

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

Mike July 15, 2011 at 9:19 am

I thought that was what Motts was referring to above and i didn’t bother checking the fxture before commenting.

Also, two weeks ago when Goddard scored 161 I was arguing for Ablett for captain as he was back in perma captain form and you have to play the percentages with perma captains rather than trying to pick the week when a Goddard will do well. Ablett scored 185 in that round.

Selwood or Goddard for me. Goddard maybe a little iffy as West Coast is a little better now than what they have been for the last 3 years so I don’t think he will find it as easy this time. Selwood for me.

It is a tough one this week!!!

Ablett slightly injured but only played a quarter last week will be fresh and playing an out of form side with no ruckman in Darwin. ( Boak scored something like 160 there when tigers and port last played there)
Swan Im leaning towards as he is finding the ball very often once again and has one more week to get his efficiency up and rarely gets tagged.
Gibbs did the job on Pendles last time so I might stear away from that
And Ive also got S Thompson and Goddard who I think is to high risk…

Hmmmm…Swan or Ablett at this stage for me …

Mick you might a good point re top of the table clashes but I have a feeling pies might run away with it and Swan might dominate

Believe it or not IMO if you have Boyd you’re better off seeing the dogs lose. As their skipper he always works his b*tt off to keep the team in it …

When they are up and running they’ve got their talented outside players breaking the lines and influencing the game in Griffen Cooney, Ward and they do take all the points of him even if he gets high contested possessions

I’m leaning towards Swan purely as potentially the least worst option. Boyd is inconsistent. Don’t have GAJ. Don’t trust Judd. Thompson? What if the ESSENDON Bombers stick Hocking on him?

It’s Swan for me at the moment.

Tossing up between Swan and Ablett.

If Ablett is fit to play i reckon he’ll score well against an out of form Richmond. But what if he knocks his knee or lands awkwardly half way through the game??

Swan is probably a safe choice cause he probably won’t get tagged. But he’s playing against/with a lot of supercoach guns who might steal points from him.

I’ll steer clear of Pendles cause he’ll most likely get a tag from Gibbs like he did in round 3.

Deledio doesn’t have a high enough ceiling IMO.

You need a captain that has the potential to get 150+ while most likely getting 120ish. So Deledio doesn’t meet any of those things.

However i could be wrong and he could be a good POD.

Swannie only (hah!) got 108 for that game. Could Gibbs line up on Swan instead or not? I think he is named as being on him (I too would put him on Pendles, Swan an -albeit slightly- weaker link currently than earlier in the season). Meh who knows what the coaches have up their sleeve. Not willing to risk it on GAJ this week. Actually also considering Cox against my saints (Goldstein went crazy against us the other week) if he can ever find his way into our state!!
