The Weapon

Written by Motts on August 1 2013

What did we think of the The Weapon’s interview last night? Made some damning allegations and threw Hirdy under the proverbial.

Essendon’s response was:

“The Club acknowledges that Dean Robinson appears to be under an extreme amount of pressure as are a number of people who are employed at the Essendon Football Club.

However, the series of allegations made by Dean Robinson on Channel 7 tonight are totally without foundation. They are coming from a disgruntled, disaffected and discredited ex-employee.

They are outrageous in nature and the club is seeking appropriate legal advice.”

Throughout the interview I was reminded of this open letter which still makes me giggle. This came out yesterday too – the pause is magnificent.

  2. Whatever the outcome, I still can’t believe it’s all been drawn out so long. AFL needs to act quicker in future instances. Like the Tour de France, it’ll happen again…….

  3. Yeah drawn out way too long, shouldn’t have taken this long. Either take action against the bombers who seem to do ‘ Whatever it Takes ‘ or don’t take any action. Should already be sorted out by now.

  4. Whether what he said last night is factual or fiction what bugs me about this is where was the duty of care for the players? It’s not as though they are upset about an extra teaspoon of protein powder or a few mls extra of cortisone; this was extracts from pigs brains and anti-obesity drugs and who knows what else. What are the long term effects….does anyone really know? Regardless of whether the drugs were legal or illegal I think the duty of care to the players went missing and it is for that reason i think the coaches (notice the plural) need to step down and the AFL need to place other sanctions onto Essendon for bringing the game into disrepute.

  5. I’d be interested to know if anybody did the same as me and made a conscious decision to avoid the interview.

It’s hit the point for me where I am sick of supposition, half-truths, half-stories, I-can-answer-this-but-can’t/won’t-answer-that’s.

As a member of the club involved I obviously have a deep interest in the outcome of the investigation and sincerely hope that, for the sake of the players involved, they receive a positive outcome, but I have made the decision to wait on ASADA.

I have far too many conversations with people who have varying levels of knowledge and interest in the topic who have made up their minds on the outcome. As 99% of us really KNOW nothing except what we have been told by various parties (many of whom have a vested interest), it seems pointless to me to listen to these sorts of interviews.

Once ASADA have completed their investigation and published the results I will read whatever they make available, because at the end of the day, what ASADA decides is really all that matters.

  6. It’s hard to know whether or not to belive what he says. There are times during the interview where he looks really genuine, and then there are times when he looks like a pi$$ed of ex employee. Just want this over already. Getting sick of hearing about it. Hope it’s out of the way for finals and next year

  7. I don’t get it, one minute he’s saying he doesn’t know what the players were given and the next he’s defending what was given to them, wtf.

  8. All I have to say is that this situation is the biggest farce in AFL history. How can it take so long to finalise this ASADA investigation when the AFL has 2 members on the board of ASADA???

  9. The whole thing just saddens me. I’m not a Bombers fan, but Hird has for years been such a figurehead of the game as a whole that, should he be proven to have cheated, the whole sport would be tarnished as a result. There is no schadenfreude to be had here. The players put everything they have on the line week in week out. It would be a great pity for this stench to hang around them for any length of time.
