The West Coast List – Midfielders

Written by Motts on January 28 2012

Matt Priddis ($618 500, 114.1, 22) – Established premium status last year but with the expected return of a fit Kerr and the emergence of Shuey as similar types of inside mids, may have to share the available pool of points, potentially negatively impacting on his return. Unlikely to increase his average to challenge the elites in the 120+ category but may be a handy upgrade after the Rd 11 bye to compensate for the expected hits in 12 & 13.

Pros: Durability, proven scorer from contested possies, handles the tag.

Cons: Kick to handball ratio, poor goal kicking ratio.

Daniel Kerr ($490 200, 90.4, 14) – Only if you have massive cojones. Has been a long time since he averaged 119 in ’07, only managing 11, 11, 4 and 14 games in the subsequent seasons.

Pros: Can go huge.

Cons: Durability, efficiency.

Andrew Gaff ($331 100, 61.1, 14) – Will be a superstar with his ability to read the play, time with the ball, vision and silky skills. Suffered from the dreaded vest disease ‘substitutitus’ in his first year but showed enough when given the opportunity to suggest he will improve his average markedly this season. At that price though, he is unlikely to either provide a milking proportion higher than a rookie or become a keeper.

Pros: Class act.

Cons: Second year, starting price, SUB probability.

Chris Masten ($310 600, 57.3, 10) – Probably the Eagles’ biggest draft blunder at #3 in ’07 (unfortunately Melbourne had pick 4), he has struggled with confidence, injury and off-field distractions (Miss Moore). Did however, show late last year that he has the potential to score huge with 182 and 137 in the last two H&A games. Similarly though to Gaff, his price makes him impossible to pick first up.

Pros: Can go huge, untapped ability, girlfriend.

Cons: Durability, starting price, SUP probability.

Koby Stevens ($135 500, 25, 2) – I’ve been very surprised to see this bloke in so many Rate My Teams given how far down the pecking order he is impacting on his job security. He has undoubted talent but has been troubled by OP since after the ’09 U/18s where he averaged 18.6 disposals and made a carnival high 30 tackles. Is in the Shuey type inside mould and has used his time well in the gym to muscle up, playing some promising footy with East Freo last year. May be a good upgrade opportunity.

Pros: Rookie price, SC scoring type.

Cons: Job security.

Overall synopsis: Hard to make an argument for any other than Priddis. Whilst its hard to see him matching Pendles, Swan, Murphy, Dal etc, he does present a valuable option for Rds 12/13. To me there are far more attractive options than Stevens at lesser clubs giving them more likelihood of playing.

Best 22 combo:

Priddis, Kerr, Shuey,

Embley, Rosa, S Selwood, Gaff

Knocking on the door:

Masten, Stevens, Stevenson

  2. I’m tossing up the idea of shuey or priddis, thought about gaff but too risky, if Stevens is playing round 1 he’s a lock. But I can’t see it.

  3. I think this will be Bradd Dalziel’s year.

I’d actually be surprised if Gaff got too many Sub vests this year – he really kicked it up a notch in the second half of the season.

  4. gaff averaged 23 touches a game when not a sub.
considering that he has had a preseason and natural development i think he would be a decent pickup
wouldnt have thought he will be the sub at all this year really
