Trade Or Hold: Dusty Edition

Written by Schwarzwalder on March 29 2019

This question seems to get asked a fair bit since Dusty won his Brownlow.  We know what he’s capable of, but he’s not quite there at the moment.  A 109 against Carlton wasn’t a bad result but 66 (from 19 disposals) against the Pies doesn’t make for great reading.  Keep in mind though that Levi Greenwood was brought into the side just to shadow Dusty all night.

With Rance, Riewoldt, Caddy & Grigg out of the side, Dusty is sure to get plenty of attention and may even spend more time forward.  With a couple of mid-pricers off to a flying start, the temptation is there to make a corrective trade next week.  What would you recommend to the owners of Dusty out there?

What to do with Dusty Martin (RIC)?

  1. I don’t have him this year, but did last year.

The question, ‘is his form over 2018 & early 2019 indicative of what you can expect?’ I thought it was, that’s why I didn’t take him.

He’ll average ~105, good for a position in the top-15/20 Mid, maybe M8/9. He’s gonna have some stinkers, and kill it occasionally.

If you started him, he’s yours until the byes at least. Try and make peace with it.

  2. Trade for a better premium or even a breakout ( Rocky, Sheed, Taranto..) and save cash. Dusty is a premium, he will now and then give you good scores because of his high ceiling. But he will be playing in a dimunished side and asked to do chores. He was also successfully tagged and the oposition teams will take note (Remember Zorko). The only reason he should be in your side is if he can rediscover his Brownlow form. Sadly he doesnt even seem hungry enough and if his tackling ability is to go by it is not going to change any time soon. Richmond being a side that is going for the flag, group dynamics and the team is more important than an individual performance. They will send him more forward where they are thin and need experience with Riewoldt out.
You can keep him and a trade , with a wish and a prayer. He will frustrate you.

  3. Sorry, off-topic, but thinking of buying a sherrin to get signed. Which colour would you buy?
    TU: red
    TD: yellow

  4. Would be mighty hard for Dusty owners to not trade to Rocky or Sheed if either of them pumps out another big score.

    Hope it is the former.

  5. Don’t have Bailey Scott and obviously want him. Cousins is my current strategy but considering Dusty.

  6. I’d hold. Even if he ends up being M8 at years end. Better then a rookie on field with no trades left.

  7. Apologies for repeating myself from the previous post, but I’m done, I’m spent with Dusty….2 years in a row now

I thought Dusty would bounce back this season but watching him closely for 2 weeks it doesn’t appear so. I can’t put up with another season of clangers, missed set shots and prancing around the fwd line….I can’t, I won’t; If Sheed or Rocky go large again, I’m pulling the trigger…At worst I’ll have an M9 loophole option +150k in the bank.

  9. People need to chill. The whole Richmond team sucked last night, but at the same time lower your expectations on dusty

  10. You shouldn’t have started in the first place, so do yourself a favour and get rid of him.

  11. I don’t have him so it’s easy for me to say trade, which I think I would do even if he was in my side. As mentioned by others I’d be inclined to go down to one of the breakout types like Rocky or Sheed and pocket the cash which always comes in handy down the track when you’re looking to do a straight swap, like Libba for a fallen Oliver maybe? That extra cash to get you across the line in one trade is priceless!
Just my view though as he might well pump out 130’s for the next month??

    1. Exactly, in the time it may take him to get his act together players like Taranto, Rocky or Sheed may very well have eclipsed him total points by a few hundred.

No use holding him because he might pump out big scores down the track, your rank will suffer in the meantime.

  12. If u own him you have to hold & just cop the frustration , he’ll go 130’s – 150’s against the bottom teams sometimes & when you add the 60’s – 80’s against the good teams , his price wont change much @ the end of the season , Probably wont get a chance to be rested this yr though , with Rance , Reiwoldt , Houli etc going down early , looks like they’re 2 yr , injury free , golden run , is over & they’re gna have to work a lot harder to finish top 4 , interestingly with Jack out for a month , big Tommy might break out

  13. FD and All Saints will be aghast. FD wrote a great article about every player, at some stage, having either their highest or lowest score for the year. AS has shown that each trade is worth $13ok.
And should we now throw out THE most important SC rule re sideways trading ??
I can recall many rage trading Grundy after r1.
    Dusty was 35 at q1.
I do agree Pendles is my first upgrade target.

      1. All I know is that if I’d made a “rookie correction trade” on Jack Billings or Michael Hibberd last year in rd 3, I’d have more hair.

    1. the sideways trade rule is great if your top 8 in an important league or ranked in the top 15,000 & happy enough with your team , if not . trades are there to use , either that’s btw R3 & R9 or btw R13 & R18 , we all have to conserve trades at some point , dosen’t really matter when , as long as you have a few @ the buisness end its all good , back your gut & have fun with it

  14. Richmond will be lucky to make the 8, and dusty is a shadow of his former self. He doesn’t give a damn anymore, and why would he? I mean he already achieved every award possible in one year

  15. As someone who grew up playing footy with Dusty I’d recommend trading him. He has always been a gun but always seemed to have runs of form whether good or bad. With the freakish talent he is even his worst is impressive (unless we are talking supercoach). I do however think he will get back to his best at some stage this season and when he does, watch out! If you trade him out to make some cash and he comes good down the track he is worth 2 trades depending on your strategy. I say this because Dusty in form is unstoppable and once he clicks he almost always continues and runs with it! I’d love to see him back at his best very soon for every AFL lovers sake and for all his friends back here in Castlemaine! Go Dusty!!!

  16. My Dusty plan is:
Trade him before price changes for Tim Kelly and Bank the difference
When I start to cash in forward line rookies after round 6 pick a forward/mid and switch Tim Kelly to the forward line.

Basically try and swap a guy that looks to finish around a top 15 mid for someone that could finish in the top ten forwards.

  17. Gawn/Grundy to Westhoff
    Oliver to anyone
    Anyone to Cogs

    Popular R1 rage trades.

Jury out on Rocky for a few rds yet. He compounded in second half.

And after one bad game…now Dusty to anyone. Got 106 r1 without trying.

Just remember sc rules 101 and 102 for long term success.
