Trade Talk Rd4 – PART TWO

Written by Schwarzwalder on April 9 2019

Plenty of Coaches wanting to make their moves……..either looking to stay in touch with the leading group or just get a win on the board in their Leagues.  Dusty being suspended makes his Coaches’ jobs a lot easier. Who else is making way?

  1. Dunkley. The man’s not in the midfield like we were promised. Tricked by Magnets again!
Kelly, meanwhile, is solely in the midfield, and at the best club in the game right now.

Dunkley -> Kelly for me this week. Thoughts?

      1. It’s a good point – obviously this trade just dependent on Kelly playing. If not, the decision is deferred another week

      1. Sheed is a big question mark for me still. Scored 2 exceptional scores with Gaff out, then Gaff comes back in and he still scores a very good score but only due to kicking three goals. Without those 3 goals, he’s back to an 80 point man and I’m not sure he’ll consistently kick 3 goals. Without that I doubt he’ll make the same cash as someone like libba will and can’t see him being a top 8 mid so he’ll have to make way at some point.

        1. realistically , how many of us actually get all the top 8 mids in our team @ any point in the season , or all the top players on any line for that matter , its a nice dream , but your bottom 2 are usually mid pricers , you just want durability & a decent output from those guys

          11

          6
    1. I was so thinking the same, but then looked at who I want as my top 8 mids at year end. I’m going straight to M Crouch. Reckon trading to Libba means two trades to get to full premo unless you are certain he will be top 8 mids. Also, he has to share with macrae, bont, hunter, and has two reconstructed acl’s.
      Just saying.

  2. Hey guys, just seeking some opinions.

Is it too impatient and sideways to be giving Balta the flick, thinking of going Balta-Miers.

Also thinking that with his BE rising a bit Bailey Scott might be on limited time in my side.

    Thoughts?

    Cheers.

    1. If Balta is playing (and he should be, given Richmond’s outs) just leave it alone. Miers has gone 37, 83, 69, and in his next three games will be up against GWS, Hawthorn and West Coast. Pretty good chance he dishes up another sub-50 score and his cash generation stalls a bit. You’d be down $50k and a trade now, and Miers may only have another $75-125k growth in him. If Balta can get a few games and churn out even some 40s, he’ll make that money himself.

If you wanted Miers, last week was the time to bring him in, before he jumped $50k.

Sit on Balta until a proper rookie priced player on the bubble presents. Perhaps Stack (if you can shuffle some DPPs) or Dylan Moore next week, or Schultz if/when he gets named for his third game.

There are quite a few forward rookies that I can see getting games as the season progresses, so I don’t think you need to waste money AND a trade chasing one with just a moderate price ceiling.

  3. 28 trades remaining, looking at using one more corrective trade.

Cant see Darling finishing in my fwd lineup, too inconsistent and want to give him the flick now.

    T/U for Kelly
    T/D for Boak

Want them both in by completion of bye weeks but just one for now

    29

    12
    1. Kelly for me – more confident he can sustain his scoring than Boak, while Boak having the R12 bye is a good initial upgrade target. If you want to bring Kelly in during the bye rounds, you’re waiting til after R13. Whichever you take, you’re going to lose them for their bye week, but taking Kelly now means you can theoretically get the second premo in a week earlier.

Also, I’m not convinced on Boak, so it gives you more time to assess whether he’s likely to continue in his current role or get shifted back into a forward or defensive role.

        1. Don’t sweat it. I never put any thought into the byes when setting up my team, there’s just too much uncertainty around rookie selections and injuries and the like. Once you’re into the season though, it can be a worthwhile consideration when trying to split two players.

  4. First time poster long time reader..

I’m of the thought Laird will not be in the top 6 this year.

Thoughts on my first two trades if you will:

    Laird>Whitfield
    Cousins>Libba

    T/U Go
    T/D Just get to libba

  5. Not sure what to do with Toby Greene

    T/U hold
T/D Trade for Moore or Rozee

I have not made any trades this season as of yet. Sitting 466 overall so want to make some smart decisions this year unlike previous years.

    13

    25
    1. i swapped him for sheed this week , my plan was to wait & see on sheed until gaff played & get 1 price rise out of greene , looks like his injury is ongoing though , biting into that lemon on that 1

      2

      4
  6. Can’t hurt to reiterate some of these points from the previous thread:

    HOOOOOOOLD!!!

The big question to ask yourselves this week – “Do I HAVE to trade this player?”

I’m not gonna lie, I’ve been tempted to hit the trade button. After all, isn’t that what Supercoach is about? Making trades to improve your team and increase your scoring? Well yes, it is, but you must remember that you only get 30 trades for the season. Across 23 rounds.

As tempting as it is to start getting in on that sweet sweet trading action, the more often you can avoid making uneccessary trades the more trades you’ll have available later in the season when your rookies are at full value, and there are a dozen fallen premos to choose from every week. Seriously, go back to some of last years mid-season Fallen Premium articles and have a look. They’re choc-a-block full of quality players who had a poor week or two through injury or form, and dropped $100k in the blink of an eye.

You don’t need to have the best team now. You need to have a team that keeps you within cooee of the top 1000, and is making money so you can pounce on the value picks week after week after week through rounds 6-14. And you then need to leave yourself with enough trades that if someone gets injured in round 19, you’re not stuck with them for the rest of the season. An injury that you can’t cover with a trade with 5 weeks left in the season is a probable loss of 300-500 points. That’s game over.

Yes, there are exceptions. Dusty looks shit, and not only shit, he looks like he’s not focused or interested. But Gawn and Grundy after round 1? Heeney after the first couple of rounds? People rushed to trade those players out for Lycett, Westhoff, Rockliff etc. off the back of one or two big scores, and now they’re left wondering why they didn’t listen to the 30+ folks on SCT who suggested they trust their pre-season judgement.

Early season – trade if you must, or if a rookie is on the bubble and simply too good to pass up (even then, you want to give it a good bit of thought). If you don’t need to, let everyone else fall behind in the remaining trade tally while they chase last week’s points.

    Simple Checkpoints Before Trading:

Check 1: Do I need to trade anyone? Action accordingly.
Check 2: Can I make significant money through a trade? Long-term and short-term gain both to be considered – crunch the numbers.
Check 3: Is the likely reward worth the risk? Best case vs. worst case vs. somewhere in the middle.

Check 2 is super important at the start of the season, because the sooner you can make bank the sooner you can upgrade your team.

Check 3 needs some context applied. High risk high reward trades should be avoided in the first half of the season, because there’s more time for them to backfire (ie. Rocky, Mumford). Late in the season, if you have trades up your sleeve, they can be the difference between making/missing and winning/losing league finals, and have the potential to catapult you past the top players on the leaderboard.

    25

    1
      1. Of course. Trade everybody! Muahahaha!

Seriously though folks, don’t trade for the sake of doing something. There should be a compelling reason to pull the trigger. You only get 30 trades, so treat them like the valuable resource they are.

Forget about your team for 24 hours. Scroll through the trade threads and read what other people are asking about. Think about what advice you’d give people, without the emotional aspect. You’ll find you’re actually much more knowledgeable and sensible than you suspect, then you just need to apply the same thinking to your own side.

        6

        1
    1. Interesting synopsis Blueballs, a lot of good advice in there as well. Check 2 is particularly interesting, there’s an amount of risk involved but there is no other instance of cash generation that can be had early in the season. Getting a decent kitty early on may save trades down the track. Particularly if the rookie pool is low.
Most would want their teams near completion after the bye rounds. What would you say is a safe number of trades that should be available for the last 8 rounds. I’m thinking 10?
That gives me 17 through to the bye rounds
Conor Rozee is listed as number 14 as the most prolific scorer on my team and it’s safe to say anyone south of him ,bar Bines, will be traded come the end of the byes. Thats 16 trades right there. Not a lot of wiggle room there in getting it right is there.

      1
      1. My equation is 2.5 trades per rookie upgrade.

Most downgrades get you around $120-200k. Most upgrades cost you around $200-250k.

So conservatively, I assume I’ll get around $150k per downgrade as an average figure, and each upgrade will cost me $225k. There are some outliers, but they usually balance out. Outcome is that 3 downgrades will fund 2 upgrades.

I started the season with 12 players I felt would be certain keepers.

Squeezed in 3 midpricers, figuring perhaps one of them might become a keeper, but also assuming that worst case scenario they’re a reversal of the equation (ie. 2 downgrades funds three upgrades, or 1.66 trades per upgrade).

That left me with 7 rookies on field in positions that need to be upgraded.

        7 rookie upgrades @ 2.5 trades each = 17-18 trades.
        3 midprice upgrades @ 1.66 trades each = 5 trades.

Leaves around 7-8 trades for early season corrections (dodged that bullet so far), injuries (dodged that bullet so far) and luxury trades (not even thinking about them). Usually I’d allocate 2 to corrective trades, the other 5-6 to injury insurance, and any I can get away with not using become luxury trades come finals.

A lot of the trades people are asking for advice on are ones they perceive as corrections, but look like premature luxury trades to me. Laird to Whitfield? Heeney to Kelly? They may pay off, but those people who are already down to 26 trades and haven’t reduced the number of rookies on field have halved the number of trades they’ll have available to cover injuries (assuming they want to complete their team too).

There are ways to get around it – you can go real hard on the bargain hunting and turn corrective trades into effective downgrades, and you can take risks on breakout contenders in the mid part of the season to make more efficient use of your money (with increased risk of getting stuck with ordinary players).

Different strokes for different folks of course – but having a plan and trying not to get sucked in to impulse trading is a good way to avoid digging yourself a hole come the second half of the season.

    2. Great points BlueBalls, this needs to be re-posted in every one of these trade talk threads. Waaaay too many knee-jerk reactions in here.
It’s only round 3, players have not made enough money to be worth downgrading or upgrading yet. Unless you’ve been hit with a proper injury (e.g. Fyfe) or a serious dip in form (e.g. Dusty, Simmo), hold all trades.

    3. Great advice & like your comments.
1st time on here & 2nd year at Supercoach.
I am trying to follow your advice above & interested in opinions on Jayden Short & Ben Jacobs.
I have enough cover to not Trade & put Emergency on Hore last night, so was going to take his Score with Short on the Ground.
Have cover in Lysett for Jacobs.
Short will loose another $30k after his next game, when he lines up again. So thought was to hold until needed & get a better upgrade in a few weeks?
Jacobs is in the same boat, $26k after his next game. Looking to get Gawn or Grundy down the track too.
Have made 1 trade a couple of weeks ago to cover 0 for Jacobs.
Traded Heehey to Lysett. Mistake in hindsight….
      What are your thoughts?
      cheers Damian

  7. Thoughts on trading setterfield and lycette out for Whitfield and Lockhart, allows me to bring Rozee and Moore to forward line and put scrimshaw on field and play one less dodgy forward rookie. Have use two trades already and sitting touch outside top 1000

    Or save trades

    5

    10
  8. Why is everyone jumping off Smith? Its only round 3, and he’s only had one average score. His breakeven is still down at 44.
FWIW, I didn’t start him (didn’t see the hype, he’s never been a good scorer), but those who have him surely just wait til he pushes to 450k, then trade him to a proper premium. Wasn’t that the plan all along? For him to be a stepping stone?
Jumping off now when he’s only gone up 22k is just burning a trade.

    21

    1
    1. Because people are seeing premos they don’t have doing well and thinking they have to find a way to bring them into their side. Or they’re seeing a rookie coming off a tonne and thinking they have to do the same even though said player has already made 30% of the money he’s likely to make.

People just need to relax a bit and understand that you can’t possibly have all the big scorers at the start of the season, and there is NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT.

Be patient and wait for these premos to have an off week or two and drop in price. It’ll happen to 90% of them.

  9. If fyfe misses I’m bringing in Whitfield via DPP. Not carrying a concussion this early in the season. Really hope it doesn’t affect Fyfe but past history of players suggests otherwise.

    7

    1
  10. considering the following:

    b smith > whitfield
    oliver > liberatore

The oliver trade is really just to get the $$ for the whitfield trade. I see whitfield as a must have and see this as potentially the cheapest way to get him in. oliver will be right up there at the end of the year, but i’m not 100% he’s a lock for top 8 yet, while whitfield clearly is.

These would be my first trades of the year.

    2

    41
    1. Oliver will likely outscore Whitfield. Libba will need trading, and you’re $70k late on him. Target Whitfield, sure, but through upgrading rookies.

  11. If I had Fyfe and was still in it for overall, I’d be doing the same. He looked horrendous after the incident. Regardless of whether he reckons he’s good enough to play or not, the club and the AFL surely, for the sake of his physical well-being (superhuman or not) need to give him time to recover.

I know it’s an inherent part of the game, but seriously … in any other employment, he’d be given the requisite time to recover. Superstar or not!

    8

  12. If Fyfe misses would it be wiser to trade him to

T/U Neale which requires two trades as I need to downgrade a rookie to find the cash

    Or

T/D a straight swap to Cognilio

    5

    12
  13. Moving on Dusty , first trade of the year, only have 40k in bank so I can’t go up to one of the expensive guns.
t/u Buy in who you can afford.
t/d Use a second trade/downgrade to finance Dusty upgrade.

    12

    3
    1. Bruce. p

      I picked T/U.

With only about $560k to play with, I would be looking at any DPP’s you can use to target a Premo forward or back? It maybe easier to find a keeper / maybe even cheaper, to start building a bank for future upgrades.

As for the other option, I can’t really see too many juicy rookies on the bubble this week ( S Stack next week ) to make it happen.

Best of luck what ever you decide.

  14. If Fyfe misses and is likely to be a bit off for a few weeks, considering:

    Fyfe-Libba
    ZWilliams-Lloyd

Williams has done nothing wrong I know but its an opportunity to bring in Lloyd whose scoring 30pts more a week.

  15. Looking at offing Fyfe now sadly before he starts burning cash, concussions not looking to keep him sustainable. Who is the better in at this point?
    T/U Neale
    T/D Macrae

    24
  16. I have the funds to go Fyfe to Neale straight up, making my Mids Macrae, Neale, Cripps, MCrouch and Steele… worth the trade?? I’ll have 28 left after making it.

I also have Dunkley but I think I’m going to hold, can’t see any of the forwards I don’t have outscoring him significantly enough from here to be worth it.
    Any thoughts appreciated.

But more importantly, wtf do we do with him?

  18. Has anyone got an opinion on who seems better all round Rookie (points, price, dollar potential & job security)

    T/U Markov
    T/D Wagner

    5

    14
    1. Wagner is averaging an extra 15 points (only a 2 game sample though) and costs $35k less.

Hard to tell on the job security front. Melbourne are in all sorts and may start swing the axe, and while Wagner’s intensity at the contest *should* help him keep his spot, it’s also possible Melbourne just look to mix things up structurally and he gets squeezed out.

I’d have said Markov would be a chance of making way for Houli, but now that Short is out for a couple of months he may well get an extended run.

Comes down to cash generation vs. time required to appreciate, I reckon. If they continue on their current averages then Wagner will take around 6-7 rounds to top out at 290k ($170k growth), while Markov will only get to $240k ($80k growth) by the same stage.

Working back for Wagner, it’ll only take him 2 weeks to make $80k.

Had no idea where this was going to lead when I started, but it’s looking pretty clear to me that Wagner is the smarter pick (if named!). Will only take two games for him to make the same kind of cash that Markov is projected to make by the byes, and you save $35k on the initial trade as well.

      1

      1
  19. Thoughts on Darling? Not a great start to the year.

Thinking of trading him to Rozee and banking the 200k.

    8

    8
    1. Why do people pick KPP’s they know will be inconsistent and then trade them out at their low point after a few poor scores?

Darling will most likely average around 85-90 points. He achieves that reasonable average with plenty of games in the 80-100 range, a handful below 60, and a handful above 130.

In 2018, after scoring a 42 in round 5, seeing his price “stall” at $448k, he went on to post 112, 132, 125, 181 over the next four games and shot up to $583k.

By all means, use a trade, but be prepared to see Darling pump out some monster scores down the line.

Personally, I’d flick him if you haven’t used any other trades yet. I’d be more inclined to go a sideways trade to someone like Dahlhaus. Trading him to Rozee makes you $180k now, then you just end up using the bulk of that $180k to upgrade Rozee to a premo in 5-6 weeks. Two trades for a premo, when you could just do it with one.

      5

      2
        1. I have been debating this all week as well. But I am now convinced it’s not worth trading Darling. I don’t have the funds to trade up to Kelly or Boak, and even though I haven’t used any trades as yet, I’m not sure the net benefit of using a trade to go to Dahlhaus will be worth it.

          1

  22. No trades used yet but don’t have Libba thinking omeara to Libba pocket 120k and Libbas breakeven is minus 50 I know trades are gold but Jesus this is hard not to do help

    5

    9
  23. Dunkley to be traded – thinking either Boak or Dahlhaus. Boak, even though his price has risen about 40k, there is still money to be made from him in next few weeks, plus he could end up a top 6 fwd, but can he maintain his output? The Dahl is obviously about 80k cheaper but has a solid three game average of 100, could end up a strong F6-7/8 player, but is 3 Cats too many as have Danger and Kelly already. Another option is to swing Moore from Def to Fwd and go Whitfield, most expensive choice though, but could be worth if for him.
    Thanks for any tips!
    T/U: Boak
    T/D: Dahlhaus

  24. Trading Dusty > Sloane. $29k in the bank

The tough one for me this week is to hold or trade Simpson. If the consensus is to trade then it’ll be Dusty > Sheed and Simpson > Whitfield. $77k in the bank.

Waste of a trade? Should I keep the faith in Simpson considering it’s more likely Sloane will be top 8 mid than Sheed which in turn will cost me another trade?

    T/U: Trade Simpson
    T/D: Hold Simpson

  25. Haven’t made a trade yet.

  26. Hi all,

I was unlucky enough to not only trade in Fyfe for Dusty last week, but also nominate him captain..

As frustrating as it is, it seems as though trading him out might be the go based on player history after concussion.

TU – Trade for another high-end premo ($300k in kitty + Fyfe value)
TD – Hold if he is miraculously named to play this week

Don’t have libba, Whitfield or boak as the main missing guys. And i have dunkly.
Unfortunately I was coping a zero after round 1 in the back line. So traded missing mid pricers to rookies. Then upgraded heeney to Lloyd(which I’m very happy with).
I’m happy with my team except dunkly and am happy to hold him. But I have the funds to turn him into boak.
So should I sit tight trusting my team to keep the pace. Or get boak.
Like I said top 3% but I haven’t posted a monster score yet to get there.

      1. I think it will come down to how my team is going up to the port game. I don’t want to trade but losing 30-50 points a week in the same position sucks lol.

    1. Three trades down already, yeah?

      I’d hold.

Rolled out some numbers earlier – based on likely price changes it normally takes around 22 trades to fully upgrade a team. If you’re using half of your remaining trades on corrections by round 4, you leave yourself super vulnerable to injuries later on. Is Dunkley – Boak worth it if it means you’re playing a rookie for 2-3 weeks (or longer) when a premo gets injured late in the year?

      1

      1
      1. Lol, the worst thing is I was one of the people who talked up boak pre season but ended up going dunkly instead. I think if I hadn’t copped that zero I’d trade him but alas I did so have to hold, Al leased I’m running 4 deep in the forward line so not coping 3 bad rookie scores this week.

      1. Silly comment is silly.

There are multiple teams in the top 30 overall who only have one of the three players. You reckon someone without them all couldn’t crack the top 6000?

          1. Traded to avoid copping a zero.

And there are multiple teams on the top 30 who only have one of the three players you seem to think are essential to be in the top 3%.

Teams with only Whitfield, no Boak or Libba. Teams with only Libba, no Whitfield and Boak. I’m in the top 1% and only have Libba from that trio.

So not sure why you seem to think the OP must be lying. Care to share your own team and ranking?

  29. Seriously considering holding Dusty.

Already copped his sh1t scores so far, along with his $40k drop in price. Only out for 1 week.

He has now become a serious POD.

Am I crazy to think he will come back with a vengeance, with something to prove, and get back to his best?

      1. Certainly understand that. I guess my thinking is that if he regresses to the mean, then it is not worth trading him.

His lowest season average over the last 4 years is 103.9 (last year). If he can manage that this season, then he would average 108 from here.

It is definitely a risk, but I’m now thinking it is one worth taking.

Heard a good quote yesterday: “If you’re thinking the same as everyone else, then you’re not thinking”…

  30. Really considering going Fyfe (who should be out for a couple of weeks and have a couple of down games when he gets back) up to Macrae & downgrading Dunks > Rozee to get the cash to upgrade Goldy > Grundy next week. Would leave me with 24 trades after next week.
    T/U pull the trigger
    T/D hold the trades

    1. Have to agree with David C at this stage – blowing through 20% of your season trades in the first four weeks is insane. Especially seeing as it looks like your net result is one less keeper than you started with (Fyfe, Dunkley, Goldy -> Macrae, Grundy, Rozee).

What have your other trades been so far? Forced changes, rookie corrections, injuries, itchy fingers?

2.5 trades per upgrade. If you’re down to 24 trades, you’ve got enough to cover 10 rookie upgrades between now and the end of the season – assuming no more injuries. Don’t like it.

  31. Haven’t used any trades!
    Thoughts on:
    Darling –> Worpel

    J.Steele –> Merrett

OR any other suggestions (keep in mind i have $1,600 in the bank)

    0

    7
    1. Really rate Steele to Zerrett.

Steele seems to be tagging again and it’s logical to me that he will only average 100 in that role in the long term, whereas I think Zerrett will average 110 from here on. If you agree with those two points its better to make this trade than not to.

A mid averaging 100 is not a true premium as a “midfielder” unless he’s a fallen premium, we consider a forward a mid pricer unless he’s top 10-15 and we have far too looser definitions with mids by comparison (100 average puts you 30th in 2018).

You can’t do that many of these trades because your priority is to go full premo but at the start of the year it’s acceptable because you will get 19 weeks with 10 points of extra scoring. That is 190 extra points by season’s end and worth a trade. This type of trade is no longer worth it as the weeks become fewer. Nobody would argue about trading an 85 avg forward to a 95 average forward at this stage but people don’t have the same logic with mids.

      1

      4
      1. Problem here is it requires two trades.

Darling to Worpel frees up the little bit of cash needed to trade Steele to Merrett. There’s a second unnecessary trade to be factored in, unless you think Worpel will average more than Darling over the entire season.

Steele to Merrett is a luxury trade you do when your team is looking really healthy later in the season (bye rounds or later) and you have cash in the bank.

  32. Currently havn’t used any trades. I also play for overall.

T/U – Fyfe to Libba, Dunkley to Lloyd (via moore) and 100k
    T/D – Don’t burn trades!

Thinking i should hold but if Fyfes out for up to 2 weeks its not ideal since Atkins / Scott both look poor field options as replacements.

    1

    4
    1. Purely going for overall, no trades used, and if you’re confident you have all the required rookies for cash generation – it’s potentially a high risk move with a big payoff.

Two corrections and banking $100k. It’ll hurt if Libba goes down though, because not only do you lose a player, but there’d be a decent chance Dunkley would bounce back.

I’d be more inclined to just trade Fyfe to someone safer and call it a day. Kelly, Gaff, Bont, Treloar, Crouch – there’s a few good options there.

      2

      0
      1. I see where you are coming from but i don’t want to sideways him to another mid. Macrae is the only other mid premo i deem a must have at some stage of the season (already have Neale and Cripps) so all those names are bound to have an off day and fall in price.

I could however go Duursma into the mids and bring in Lloyd which i am now considering. Does mean Walsh up to M5 but team structure has never bothered me (i currently have darcy moore as D3) .

Edit: Turns out im actually 4k off Fyfe to Lloyd! That hurts

        0
    2. I have a similar type of issue regarding Fyfe.

I am intending to hold him but do I :

T/up – Gamble that Atkins or Scott will score well

t/dwn – Ignore the Josh Glenn rule and go one week early on Stack and trade him in for Gibbons.

If Gibbons gets dropped I can loop hole Atkins and if he bombs then put Scott on field

      Thoughts?

T/D – Bench him and play Constable on the field (not much harm done)

    TU: Trade Wagner in

    1. You simply have to get rid of Dusty mate. Only my personal opinion, but don’t think he will be a top 15 mid this year. Leaking cash, losing points and not playing this week. No positive signs to speak of. The weeks rest may allow him to clear his head a little, but I don’t expect premium numbers from Dusty that would warrant a starting position in our midfields. Think it’s time to cut your losses with Dusty unfortunately mate. Good luck

    1. Hold missed the boat IMO will only make 100k on each & will cost 2 trades to get in then out

I just don’t trust Moore to score consistently all year.

        1. Then why would you upgrade a bench rookie to Moore after he’s already had two price rises next week?

    1. I’ll go against the crowd here mate and advise to trade. Looking to leak a lot more cash and I have seen no signs that he will turn his form around. We have asked ourselves this for the last 5 years, but has Father Time caught up with Simmo? I think it may have. Out of that list I’d trade him to Hurn as I think he’ll be a pretty consistent scorer. Good luck

      1. Appreciate your advice Dan Rich, trade is my gut feeling as well. I may make a second trade by swapping out a Gibbons for a Sydney Stack as I’m only 10,700 short of Whitfield. 38. I’ve got three rookies that are all essentially useless aside from loophole purposes. They are:

    Hore (Melb)
    T. Watson (Fro)
    Bines (WC)

I’m inclined to get rid of Hore as Bines is in the specialist ruck position, with Watson a very handy loophole given how many Sunday afternoon games Freo play.

I’ve also got 300k in the kitty, however I’m more inclined to save most of that for a premo upgrade in the next week or two.

    TU – Trade one
    TD – Hold the trade

    Comment – Good trade options

    Thanks team.

    4
    1. Also worth noting my existing backline consists of Whitfield, Williams, B. Smith, Moore, Clark & Duursma.

      1

      0
    2. The loophole is a bit of a trap, I feel. There aren’t so many viable rookies running around that there’s much likelihood of being able to manipulate it for a big score. It also leaves you a fair way behind the pack on cash generation. You’re an injury away from half your bench generating $0.

I’d wait and see on Hore – a loss up in Sydney will force more changes for Melbourne and he could find his way back into the side. He flew up with the team, so he can’t be far down the pecking order. 5+ games between now and the byes would represent decent cash growth for him.

Can’t see Watson or Bines ever getting a game.

No replacements really stand out for Bines, and he does provide a nice captaincy loophole option that doesn’t mess with other emergency options. I suppose there’s a chance he could be flipped for O’Brien if Jacobs is looking like an extended out, but I don’t think that’s the case.

Where is Watson in your side? Down back, you’ve got no emergencies with him and Hore which sucks, but no standout trade-in options. In the middle, you could look at Wagner or Stack.

      1

      0
      1. Fair point re Hore, he remains for another week!

Watson is indeed up back, meaning there are no emergencies in place with the two of them. Possibly worth trading out Watson to a Rozee, Jay Lockhart or Markov?

In the mids i’ve got Butters, Scott and Gibbons
Won’t be moving on Stack until next week pending his performance this week when the bubble is due to burst.

        0

        0
        1. It’s a worry down back – a late out and you’re staring down the barrel of a donut.

Prefer Markov to Lockhart for JS reasons, but the extra dollars are a worry.

Watson to Lockhart as a corrective trade looks OK. Not super inspiring, but it’s either that or be stuck with a rookie who is never going to make money.

          1

          0
            1. I’m really not confident on it.

Hore made the side in round 1. He’s a travelling emergency this week. Melbourne are getting spanked. Who knows if they’ll get fed up with Frost/McDonald struggling to keep bigger forward lines contained and turn to Marty. He’s not a huge unit, but he’s a decent size and should be able to play the third defender role.

Lockhart came out of nowhere, and looks OK, but plays a role that is perhaps more easily filled by others.

Would suck to trade Hore to Lockhart only to have Hore get a recall and Lockhart to be given a spell. On the flipside, Lockhart could keep his spot and Hore could be banished for all eternity.

My gut tells me it’s not a good trade. On current scoring, Lockhart only makes $120k over time anyway, so there’s not a heap of upside. If he was belting out 80-90 types scores then it’d be a different story. Hold Hore, see if he can make a little bit of money between now and whenever the next really promising rookie presents.

  39. Thoughts on

TU Dusty –> Worpel & Gibbons –> Constable
Short back story no trades used so far. Have Fyfe out this week. Would mean I only need to field one of Drew, Setterfield, Parker, Petruccelle. Then just for this week loophole Scott and Atkins with Fyfe out.
TD Constable is gone no point getting him in just go Dusty to Worpel

Midfield is Cripps Fyfe MCrouch BCrouch Brayshaw Libba Walsh Bench Atkins Scott and Setterfield/Drew post trade

Really need help on this one. I was contemplating doing these trades last week and they would of worked out really well

    0

    1
    1. Last week was the week for Constable – not sure how you missed the boat 🙁

That being said, he’s still got upwards of $200k in growth if he keeps pumping out scores around the 90 mark.

I think there’s just enough cash to be made to make it worthwhile. Though I’m not as sold on Dusty to Worpel to facilitate it. If Gibbons gets dropped (half a chance, I reckon) then I’d probably pull the trigger. If not, maybe consider just doing Dusty to Constable and bank the cash for now. Puts you in a strong position for a couple of early upgrades.

      1

      0
      1. Missed the boat because I hung in on a premium for an extra week then downgrading to rookie. Only had 5.5k ITB and had no issues in my team other than Dusty. Wish I had of done it last week would of gained about 80 points and 150k ITB.

Worpel I watch intently last week would of gone 100+ if he just kicked the ball had 18 handballs and Hawks have injury concerns for the foreseeable future.

Alternatively could go Dusty to any play under 525k on any line like TK

        2

        0
        1. Prefer Kelly to Worpel if you don’t have him – much more likely he ends up a top 6 forward. Doesn’t help you with Constable though. Missing $200k in rookie fattening hurts a fair bit.

Worpel – he looks good now, but if he tires during the season he may be rested, and if his scoring drops away like you’d have to half-expect, you may end up sideway trading him later too.

          1

          1
  40. Holding Fyfe but really concerned about playing Atkins or BScott. Got Westhoff too with his consecutive 30s/40s.

TU – go for it, cash gen and points
TD – nah, hold off and keep faith in Westhoff

    1. I’d definitely persist with Crisp mate. No way you should be trading out Walsh now. Give it another week and see how Stack goes. Remember that Scott pumped out a 100 in his first week and has followed up with some poor scores. If Stack pumps out a score in the 30s, you be kicking yourself. Good luck with the decision mate

      2

      0
        1. And the plan to get Whitfield in is to boot Walsh coming off a tonne, with potentially $150k in growth still to come, and a premo you backed in at the start of the season who has had one poor score, but is capable of averaging 95+? For Whitfield and a rookie who has only played one game?

Donald – don’t chase last week’s points. Whitfield looks good, but teams aren’t going to let him run around getting 42 touches all that often. Save your trades, trust Crisp to average a respectable score, let Walsh make his money, pick up Stack if he has another good week this week, and wait til Whitfield gets tagged out of a game and comes down a bit in price before bringing him in.

          4

          1
  41. Hey guys,
I’m thinking Fyfe has to go. I’m very much against trading my premos when they are only out for a week, but I think concussion is different. It may take Fyfe a few weeks to feel like himself again and I don’t want to hold onto him and risk him pumping out moderate scores. A big risk I know, as he could easily return to his early season form.

The other reason why I am leaning towards a trade is that it is also a good opportunity to do a mini restructure of my team.
    Out: Fyfe
    In: Boak (via Setterfield)

This allows me to play Butters on field and strengthen my fwd line by not having to field a poor scoring rookie. Going for overall and currently in the top 1000, so want to generate as many on field points as I can.

    T/U: Good thinking DR
T/D: Fyfe is life and he will come back to haunt you!

    4
    1. Cheers for the reply, DR.

Fortunately i don’t have your Fyfe dilemna, mate but i agree he might be a bit quiet for 1-2 matches when he returns so i’d use him to boost your prem mids now.

      Good luck!

    2. D_Riches

I like the way your thinking but I’m not sure Boak is the answer.

Check out FD’s Cow Talk this week, he makes great points re Boak.

Personally I would be looking at T Kelly , R Grey or Menegola.

If you have Moore back, you could aways target a Premo defender?

      2

      1. Thanks for the advice mate! I actually tried to bring in Lloyd in the backs instead of Boak in the fwds in the first place, but unfortunately was a couple of grand short. Already have Danger, Heeney and Telly, so cant afford to bring in Menegola due to bye constraints. At this stage I’m slightly more confident on Boak over Grey due to form and role atm. I’ll definitely check out Fathers article. All the best and good luck FT

  43. Thoughts on solution for non playing defender David Cunningham $250,100. Should be back in the team in 3 weeks. Have bank roll of $319,200
Current defence is Lloyd, Laird, Whitfield, Sicily, Smith, Collins & Clarke.

    Duursma is in the midfield.

T/U: No trade, wait a week or two for fallen premiums.

T/D: Send Duursma to defence and with $569,300 trade in say DPP M/F type Menegola, Wingard, Heeney, Dahlhaus type

    0

    2
    1. I’d sit on him for now – if I remember right it was billed as a three week layoff at the time, and he’s missed two games, so hopefully just the one more. Should be back into the side as soon as he’s fit and spending some time around the stoppages while hopefully kicking the odd goal.

Backline looks solid as is, so no need to rush him out of the side.

      1

      2
    2. Prob the deepest backline I have seen in a while mate! I’d send Duursma to defence and bring in another premium in the mid/fwd as I’m assuming based on your backs that you might be lighter for premos on those lines.

      2

      1. I’d probably side with blueballs here. You’ve waited this long, sitting tight another week for him to come back is the better long term option.

  44. Is it still feasible to bring in Sam Walsh and/or Connor Rozee? Although we might have missed initial price rise there still seems to be significant cash generation to come coupled with more than reasonable scoring?

    1

    3
    1. Personally think you are wasting trades there mate. You will have to use 2 trades to get them in, then 2 trades to get them out. Don’t think it’s worth wasting that many trades for the cash generation you will receive.

      1

      0
        1. I’d definitely bring in Constable over Walsh or Rozee mate, but have borderline missed the boat. He was a must have last week but not so sure now. In saying that, he still has a fair bit of value in him, so wouldn’t be the worst trade in. Good luck with the decision BB

          2

          0
        2. I think the ship has sailed on Walsh and rozee. Constable seems very well placed in our midfield (cats supporter) but I’m not sure how consistent his scoring will be with so many high scoring players in the team. The game he got nominated for rising star where he had 31 touches and a goal, he scored 80. If I were you, I’d probably wait for stack%another rookie to come along. The time to bring these blokes in was last week imo

          0

          0
      1. Hold fyfe!!! Only out 1 game at this stage. I know concussions can be tricky but if he does fall in cash, most of us will be jumping on him anyway as a fallen premium. This is my thinking anyway with Yeo.

  45. Have 30 trades left and am thinking of trading Fyfe to Lloyd. Players in the past such as Stef martin, Wingard, parker, Merrett, J Lloyd and B Smith etc. have scored poorly after concussion.

  46. Traded Fyfe and Dunkley to Merrett and Dahlhaus. I reckon both these boys will be in the top few in their respective positions come season’s end and are both underpriced. While I considered Macrae/Neale instead of Merrett I can get them when they inevitably have even a slight dip in form/price whereas I think Merrett is as low in price as he’s gonna get.

Any glaring issues with this thought process?
    Thoughts very welcome

        1. Sorry mate, I wasn’t clear at all, I already have Dunkley and was wondering if he’s a better option to trade out

          Cheers

  49. TU: Scott to Constable, net loss of $46,600.

TD: Save the trade – missed the boat on Constable. Saving the trade will force me to play Atkins, Gibbons or Wagner (emerg. from last night)

  50. A lot of talk already but hard to find a clear answer.

Dunkley not expected to get more cba’s unless there is a midfield injury.
I don’t have options to get Whitfield in otherwise I wouldn’t hesitate, so….
Is Boak the real deal and going to be a top 6 fwd?

    T/U: Trade to Boak
    T/D: Persist with Dunkley

  51. I can’t help it but with 30 trades left Fyfe is going this week due to insufficient cover as Scott is out. Plus concussion can have lasting affects. Sticking to the rd12 byes I have 3 options. Macrae, Bont and Zerrett. Bont just doesn’t sell to me, so I rule him out. This leaves Macrae and Zerrett

Macrae at 686k would leave me with 40k left over, but I didn’t start him due to an expected price drop. He has a BE of 138 so just 1 somewhat average game and it will fall a fair way. I’d need this to happen in the next 2-3 weeks.

For Zerrett he had an interrupted preseason but the last 2 week has scored tonnes and his first round 60 odd has dropped out. He has a BE of 86 and is priced at 533k. I’d make 70k and then have 200k itb for an easy upgrade to someone like Macrae.

So do I go Macrae and spend the money or save money on Zerrett and hope for a Macrae price drop then bring him in with my 200k?

    TU Macrae
    TD Zerrett

    1. I’d go Merrett now, and then Macrae before the bye when their prices are $100k or less the difference.

You’ve got a full set of trades left remember.

  52. Oh, wow. Are most people trading Fyfe? What’s the consensus? I don’t have him but I’m interested to know what everyone’s doing.

    T.U: Yep, he’s out.
    T.D: Be sensible and hold.

    1. Concussion can cause ongoing affects and without making a trade this season I can treat this as a correction trade. If I had made 2-3 trades he would be still in the team
