Watson v Gibbs

Written by Motts on March 14 2012

I really don’t want to fire up our Essendon-supporting readers any more……….ah, who am I kidding? I LOVE firing up Bombers supporters.

After some of the Comments in the Yarran v Heppell poll I couldn’t resist throwing this one up.

Who would you grab out of Jobe-1-Kenobi and Gibbsy?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

  1. Heppell smashed Yarran.
Watson will smash Gibbs (Thank god you didn’t put him up against Judd/Murph)
Essendon will smash Carlton on April 21st.
Motts will be last in SCT LoEC2 (and LoEC1 if rumours are true)

you really know how to push my buttons Motts……

  3. A better poll would’ve been Gibbs vs Judd as Carlton #2 midfielder. I’ve gone Gibbs in this poll because Jobe-1 is far too injury prone & Gibbs is on the rise.

On a unrelated note; Kane Lucas JS & role?? How will he get a meaningful role in Caaarlton’s midfield? Will he be wearing the vest regularly?

  4. Does anyone have an idea on the “major story about to break about a premiership heavyweight team”? (see twitters to the right of screen) Is this the Dane Swan thing finally rearing it’s head?

  5. Another Bombers vs Blues match up!….ill be less diplomatic on this one. Gibbs is a fine midfielder who will be a consistent scorer all season but Gibbo has to share the centre with a host of quality midfielders (Judd, Murphy, Scotland, Carazzo, Robinson etc) while Watson is pretty much ‘The Man’ at Bomberland. IMO ive never seen a footballer be involved in so many plays around the ball. Always anticipating where the footy is gonna go. Gibbs likes to rack up possessions too but their mostly uncontested while Watson is in & under player. So outta the two i would hafta pick Jobe as he’s obviously Essendon’s best player & Gibbs isnt Carlton’s (Now if Gibbs still had DDP status, it could be a different story lol)

  6. Close call – There has been a dramatic change to Watson’s game over the last 12 months and I can see it improving further in fantasy terms. The only cloud is his body.
His kick to handball ratio increased from 0.57 to 1.14 and his goal kicking average doubled. In previous years he only spent about 80% of game time but last year he was able to put mutiple games in excess of 85%. His average tackle count was down slightly last year which would suggest more time pushing forward, however, he is a clearance king. With more assistance from the bomber midfield and if they can get the ruck dilema sorted out then he must improve his point scoring in 2012.

I can see Gibbs also increasing his scoring ability. He has an exceptionally high kick to handball ratio in excess of 2:1 and average marks of around 8. These stats were not affected with his move to a mid pushing forward towards the end of last season. The upside being kicking goals. His endurance was not affected and he has the capacity to spend 90% of time on ground. His body is sound and if Carlton can stabilise their backline Gibbs will be fantasy relevant for sure.

  7. Lets look at it in a simple way

Watson for 2011 played 16 games, scored 1696 points at an average of 106 PG

Gibbs for 2011 played 22 games, scored 2267 points at an average of 103 PG

Gibbs scored an extra 571 points for the year, I know who I would rather have

  8. I’ve been tossing up this same matchup for my m4 position. And even though I am a blues supporter I’ve got Watson in at the moment.

All people are going off the fact that Gibbs is going to have more midfield time this year. But Carlton have enough midfielders especially with the emergence of Lucas and curnow. With a couple of defenders down atm whose to say Gibbs won’t play back again.

Watson should average 115+ this year, looks to have gotten better over the preseason and was in amazing form last year before his injury.

The only reason this is even a contest is watsons injury history – but not enough to swing it for me.

Watson gets the nod at this stage.

  9. I think that’s exactly his point BR&B. Your highly likely to get a full season out of Gibbs, whereas Jobi isn’t as likely. Very, very hard to split though. Gibbs because he is a good SA boy.

  10. My brother is o/s atm & I’m helping him to build his SC side & I have a moral dilemma about whether to tell him about SCT or too keep mum & refer him elsewhere to another SC site, or, of course, to no site @ all.
This dilemma may well need to be solved via one of Motts’ famous polls so that the esteemed SCT community can make a decision, b/c for me, this is a harder question than whether to run a 2/2 or 1/3 ruck strategy.
Oh yes, the poor bugger barracks for Essendon.

  11. Off this topic slightly, but with Max Bailey injuring his wrist, just wondering whether David Hale’s scoring potential will rise now at Hawthorn?
