    1. Don’t mind starting 1 premium of either Port/Stk but wouldn’t load up any more probably. We do get 10 games of them since Rd1 anyway and if their price is right from the get go and it’s one less trade to make over the main byes to get an extra player the whole way through.

Rookies don’t matter as they will be gone by then.

    2. I was keen on starting Rozee … will look at him for R12 now .. will invest in a rookie to make the cash to cover any uplift in Rozee’s price .. (if he’s on the up).
Have gone back to Martin as my D2.

      1. I feel like if Rozee is going to go bang this year then you’d want to get him now at $422k rather than when he could be around $520k+

        8

        0
        1. Yeh, but its weighing up whether I want $450K+ sitting on the bench for R11 or not … I could go with Parish or even Petracca and just swap out/in for R12 or R13..

          0

          4
          1. But Rozee would give cover throughout all the other byes, you’ve saved potentially $100k and he would be easy to cover for the one round he is out. Just my opinion though

            1. I’m not worried about the subsequent byes.. I don’t get your point that Rozee would be easily covered . I’m thinking of selecting him because he will be knocking out 90 to 100 pts, that’s not easily covered by a rookie, or a trade which defeats the argument.. especially given that most teams will have the same higher scoring rookies in their team ready for the cull for R12… So if my opponent has no Stk or Port players I would be at a disadvantage having Rozee on the bench..

              1. Sorry, my point about being easily covered was making reference to not having a doughnut on the field

                1. Mate If after 10 rounds some one is unable to cover 1 player that no one can help. And there will be injuries, suspensions. Pretty good chance whether you have Rozee or not, some one will be forced to miss 1 or 2 rounds after round 10. And after Rd 10, no serious coach will have 2 doughnuts.

    3. Is both Houston and Roberton together in the backline a no-go due to the rd 11 bye for port and saints??

      3

      0
  1. For those teams with either Houston or Roberton (or both) currently in their team, do you now look at getting rid of them due to where their bye now sits?

    1

    7
    1. Houston’s DPP will potentially let you move him to bench. Roberton you have to wear if you don’t have bench cover… maybe Mitch Hibberd or Lachie Ash can provide a mid/def swapsie.

But if you’re still worried about that at round 11 Roberton has become a keeper and you have bought him for 250k unders.

      4

      1
    2. I have both at this stage. Waiting for team lists. If both end up starting DR will make some cash and would be out by Rd 7-8. Don’t see him doing 90+. Houston will stay little longer as long as he attends CB. His DPP is an added advantage and can be asset during Rd 12-14.

    1. Watching him like a hawk .. could make his way into my team depending on the remainder of the practice matches … and some marked improvement in his effective disposals ..

    2. he is currently in my team and will be watching him along with Greenwood, Gresham and Petracca this weekend to see what their roles are likely to be.

    1. Sam Petrevski-Seton (CAR, DEF/MID, $443,300).

Averaged 91 between rounds 10 and 20 last year. Very talented, and just turned 22, so big upside, and just about to head into his prime. Also durable, having played 64 of a possible 66 games in his career, including 44 out of 44 in the last two years.

      4

  2. I am pondering the prospect of starting with a couple of rookies who will quite possibly not be named for round 1.
These could include Hibberd, Rankine and Young.
What are people’s thoughts on starting with an extra donut other than R3.
Will probably save a trade down the track.

    1

    7
    1. Certainly one tops two but not 3 if they get injured again that’s a lot of bread missing hibberd for me that is all imo

      1

      0
    2. It depends on how quickly you think they’re likely to make their way into their respective sides. Cowquisition rule no. 5 has this to say:

“Money is gold, trades are oxygen, and downgrade targets are platinum. Never waste a downgrade target by starting with him on your bench.”

If they’re far enough away that they could be a downgrade, don’t start them. If they’re only a week or two away, then it might be okay, especially if you can use them to perform a Motts Manoeuvre.

      11

      0
    3. Hibberd was definitely in the Essendon ideas for the season.

Young injured so soon is a worry.

Rankine? Might still get up for round 1.

If there are NO options then carry them, but we usually hope for downgrade options so this can be a good thing.

  3. This Saints/Port rescheduling means we need be careful with our bye planners if we are relying on SC Gold, or the annual SCT planner. Wondering if there will be amendments to them.

    1. Yeye, Rocky is an awkwardly priced $495K POD. Yes With Wines out, he will dish some great scores early.
Is he able to dish out a 150+ pts score? yes.
Is he worth a Premo mid spot? No.
Is he going to be top 10 mid to be a keeper? no.

He is only relevant if you think he can make you $150K + after his R11 bye to get you an uber Premo Mid. The question is either he will remain injury free for that. Better options elsewhere with a good night sleep.

      4

    1. Lucent? Checked his first weeks? He faces all the monster rucks, then you have the Round 11 bye issue.

Bring him in at Round 12, use Ceglar, Patton or Naismith before then.

  6. So thinking if Cameron and xerri are both named, putting one in the r3 spot as emergency to cover Gawn round 1. Will have comben fwd obviously.
But if Gawn plays and goes big and Cameron and xerri go decently I’m missing a decent rookie score on the field up fwd.
So, trust in Gawn to deliver and have both rookie rucks on field in the fwds(if named)
Or cover Gawn at the expense of a decent rookie score up fwd?

Xerri (?) well I’ll take a rookie ruck on field in the fwds (if he’s named).

  11. What do people think of this… Laird (if playing down back) will be in a stinking Crows team where a lot of ball will be in their back half. He should get a lot of it.

Plus, with Crows getting beat up each week, opposition wont sit on him as much anymore, and he’ll get a lot of it.

SO, merit in picking him? Or am I being the head Dummy?
    Dunny

Without the availability of their regulars could he be the new mid breakout?

  15. I see a lot of people picking Dawson this year. Anyone care to explain their reasoning? As a Swans supporter I do rate him, but as a mid pricer who has barely missed a game I’m not sure of the justification in picking him.

    1. As a fellow Swannee I’m waiting on todays game before I make a final decision.
Others like myself (?) often use pre season games as a “watch list”.
Hence the frequency of changes after chat time.
If he gets another 100 with Lloyd playing it will be hard not to keep him.
      Hope that helps.

  16. WHO’S TAMPERING WITH THE STATS FIGURES???

L Webber GC v Geelong TOG was originally less than 50.

  18. Hey guys and gals, to be successful in this game how important is setting up loopholes. Do the consistently good coaches have a loophole on every line or just 1 or 2 with dpp ability.

    0

    1. Hi DB
Just the one loophole player is pref. Don’t forget injured players (if u get any) can also be used as loophole player… don’t want to stack your team with any more donuts than needed.

  19. Is both Houston and Roberton together in the backline a no-go due to the rd 11 bye for port and saints?

    1

    4
    1. Only if you still have both Rd 11.
Houston with DPP can be hidden for the week easier than Roberton.
It will all depend what you are holding on the bench at the time.
You maybe lucky(haha) to have a current bench player earning same points.

  21. Other than Rowell and Pickett are there any other rookies locked in ?

I must have fiddled with my side 20+ times just today and feel I am further away than ever from having a settled side.

I have a feeling that both the Afl and supercoachtalk.com.au websites are going to go into meltdown on Thursday 19th around 6.25pm with coaches finding out which rookies have need selected.

    TU: Mitchel and Cog
TD: J Kelly and T Kelly

Or vice versa, what do you guys think will be a good combo ?

    11

  24. So I dont expect these guys to be keepers but I expect to make some dough!

    TU: Narkle $396k

    TD: Hately $301k

Any feed back would be amazing.

    0

    9
    1. Narkle is a talent, but when he goes missing, he really goes missing (ave’d 49 across three finals games last year) and I reckon is overpriced thanks to his two big games at the end of the H&A season last year.
With Ward still 4-5wks away (prolly more knowing the Giants) and Taranto out until around the byes, if Hately is named Rd1, you’d think he’ll have served his purpose before you’ll encounter JS issues, but don’t hold me to that; the HULC has been known to drop players even when playing well!
Good luck whatever you decide 🙂

      1. Cheers AllSaints. A great insight as always.

I already ditched Narkle when i properly dug into geelongs list.

Hately really tempts me, as does andrew brayshaw! But to get either I have to change ash/macrae to a hately/houston combo.

Which could pay dividends, but a risk!

  25. Second player choice! I feel I know popular opinion here but it’s a hard call.

    TU: Cumming 245k
Averaged 56 off 5 games last year and is only 21. Scored a healthy 86 off 70% tog & 111 off 61% tog.

    TD: Roberton 260k
Averaged a solid 92.5 off 22 games in his last full season of footy back in 2017. We all know the health issues and hes had basically a 2 year hiatus from footy. Played marsh game 2 and scored 60 off 82% tog.

    Cheers fellas.

    4

    8
    1. Cumming is in my team.
He’ll Probably be last years Ridley or cunningham but surely one has to pay off one day.

      1

      0
      1. Only concern with Cumming, who did indeed last great over the Marsh Series, is the return of Williams. That zoning, aggressive half back role will ultimately fall back to him.

Will need some clarity on his situation first before I consider Cumming.

  26. This is a screw ball season so far.
So many coaches with so many different ideas. I think it’s actually really neat that this has happened.
    Anyhow…
    I propose a poll or 3-4.
How many players are you selecting at
    600+
    550-600.
    400-550.
    250-400.
    180-250.
Might help with structures for people.

    1. depends on how many keepers you have before this decision. If you need another I’d likely pick Brayshaw, if you have enough already I might run with Stuv and hope for a reasonably quick cash grab!

      2

      1
      1. I’ve currently got both. 1 in mids and 1 fwd. If one of them can avg 90 and not get injured then they might be a sneaky chance to be a keeper at F6 or F7 loophole. The other will be traded up to a mid-Uber premo by round 5-6 once starting cash cows have fattened up. At least that is the plan until it all goes horribly wrong

  27. Interested to hear what people’s thoughts are in regard to planning for bye rounds with your initial team set-up. Do people try to target only a certain amount of premium starters (i.e.: season long keepers) from each bye round and if so what proportion is ideal? Assuming 13 keepers to begin with, no more than 5 from each bye round? Lastly, would you be swayed to pick different premo’s if your team was stacked with too many from a particular round?

  33. Is anyone worried with selecting all these mid pricers that they will have to be upgraded later on in the season?
Instead of starting 13 Premos we may have to start 10-11 Premos and 3-4 Mid Pricers. So instead of needing about 20-22 trades to upgrade we might need 25-27 trades. Is this a correct way of thinking or am I way off?

    3

    0
    1. It’s correct, also they are cheap for a reason, they get injured alot. People will be coming out of the byes with 2 trades most likely.

  35. Alrighty lads & ladettes (and everyone that is neither), I’ve had a thought and it’s looking really juicy to me atm and I’d like your thoughts please.

TU – Xerri R3, Long F4 and rookies from F5 onwards

TD – Naismith R3, rookies from F4 onwards with Xerri somewhere in there

For what its worth I’ve got Gawn and Grundy as R1/2 and I’m thinking with Gawn’s injury concerns having Naismith at R3 to cover him if he goes down *touches a lot of wood* and Xerri as the swing option should that happen is a nice security blanket as well as a decent money making option if no one gets hurt and Naismith just does Naismith things for a while.

If you’re not a fan of the thumbs and just want to blast me in the comments, go for your life 😉

    4

    1. I didn’t think there was anything to worry about with Gawn in the half he played and racked up nearly 70 pts in Marsh 2. Also, Goldy almost always solo ruck…I’m looking at Comden for f/8 c loop, but Williams (r/d) from Eagles as r3. Williams could go def at a pinch, Comden into r3, and a new f8 if a rookie pops up along the way.

  37. On a serious note, thoughts about the possibility of games being played without spectators, or worse, cancelled/postponed ??? I think if that happens, matters SC/AFL would actually be of secondary importance, but it is still the elephant in the room that hasn’t been spoken about yet.

    0

    1. The afl/goverment will definitely suspend the season at some point soon. There no way someone involved dosnt get it.

      2

      0
      1. As TOF said, one of the players will be infected at some point and then that’ll be it for footy for a while. It’s frustrating from a sporting view, but completely understandable in the bigger picture. Just something we’re going to have to deal with this year unfortunately, and if missing a few rounds of footy is as bad as it gets, then I think we got off lightly.

        6

        0
        1. If we work on a possible assumption that the season will be suspended for 2 or 3 weeks, maybe we need to rethink a few things with our SC teams

          1. Players we may have not selected because we feel they miss too many games, might ease into the season or are a chance to be rested during the season. Dusty was one for me. Hurn another. Jelly also

          2. GNR worked because you could get to full premo and easily chase down the points lead of a mid priced team. Could a mid priced team with rookies on the bench only build up enough of a points lead to hold off a GNR team?

          3. Will a shorter season limit the opportunities for second round rookies? It’s as much the second round rookie selection that determines whether we reach full premo or not.

The teams we are seeing are moving away from 123k rookies (because there are none!) into 180k to 215k players, with the occasional Roberton type around 250- 280k. It’s not really mid priced madness, just GNR with more expensive rookies. I wonder how a genuine mid priced madness team might fare this year. If ever there was a year it might work this feels like it might be it.

        2. Do they not know how much time and effort everybody has gone to getting their Supercoach sorted, ten of thousands of hours, what a waste.

  38. Hey SCT hierarchy, I think we should definitely be looking at our sides in regards to this virus. Looking more likely that they will play behind closed doors or suspend the season if it gets too bad i.e a player getting it, increasing likely hood of it spreading.

With that in mind, fringe players who were getting a game because of injuries etc may have to be looked at if they suspend the season after round 1 or down the track.

Just something else to ponder. Could be a very weird opening come next Thursday the way this is spiralling .

      1. @Cuzza2, I think you are using “sic” wrong. It’s used to indicate that a quoted passage has an error, but that’s how it was said or printed originally. It doesn’t mean a pun.

        Your sincerely,
The Grammar Nazi. (It’s a compulsion, I can’t help it.)

  39. Agree Zac. What are we SC tragics to do ? My life has been tuned to the first 5 rounds, all including Thursdays, and up to 5 days of games as in r4. What do we all do if they push the season back ??

Thats in jest of course……my personal opinion is that the public dont know everything there is to know about this virus.

  40. I think AFL and SuperCoach is screwed for 2020. All it will take is one player, or one person at a club, or one relative of a person at a club…

It’s been fun, see you next year, @SCT-ers!

  41. Tossing up between Viney and MacPherson as a bit of a POD. Thoughts on which one would be a better option?

  42. Just throwing this out here for discussion. As the Coronavirus spreads I think it’s inevitable that rounds will be canceled. The afl will try and postpone as many games as possible but it will happen as players catch it and clubs will have to stand down. So therefore less opportunity for rookies to play and make money. So we might need to pick more mid prices and less high end players.

    1. Yup

      Seriously considering running this team

Houston Weller Doc Bailey Roberton Noble (Brander Williams)

Dunkley Oliver Coniglio McCluggage Walsh McGrath Rowbottom Rowell (Pickett Robertson Budarick)

      Grundy Naismith (Xerri)

Petracca Ceglar Bradshaw Steven Smith Lukosius (Rankine King)

      Grundy almost perma captain.

      Sooooo tempted…..

    2. My 6yo grandson has had March 21 circled on his bombers calendar all year. Was told last year that rules are you must be 6 to go to the footy. How does his Mum now explain he can’t go, even though they are playing 🙁

  43. Hey everyone. I’ve got $437,000 and one forward spot to fill. Who do ppl like?
    Membrey
    Stephenson
    Westhoff
    Gunston
    C. Cameron
Or someone that’s less money? I’m leaning towards Charlie Cameron but I think St Kilda will have a better year so membrey might fire. Thoughts?

    1. Do you already have Brayshaw, Smith & Steven?

If not I would take one of them cheaper and likely to score better then the players you’ve named IMO

  44. Tempting but up & down (pardon the pun!)

    T/U Laird & McCluggage

    T/D Houston & Oliver

Probably down to who has bigger break-out b/w Clug & Houston…?

  45. Who to pick for Rucks, Backs and Fwds. I reckon the second option gives me many more points but also more potential headaches.

T/U – Gawn, Noble and King
T/D – Naismith, Houston and Steven

    1. Yeah, Stewy, the second option nets more points:

      120 + 70 + 30 = 220
      80 + 90 + 90 = 260

However, I’d still lean towards option one:
      – you’ve got a monster SC scorer in Gawn who you can reliably look to most weeks for the VC/C, plus I think it’s ill-advised to not start him
      – Noble’s got very solid JS and should hover at around the 70~ mark, almost a must have down back
      – King, yes, will score poorly but if you can force him to F7-8 he’ll just be a slow burn and emergency cover if needed

  46. Whitfield was only tagged 3 times last year Rounds 11 and 19 and then in semi. His ave for the 3 games was 67 with a high score of 90 the other 2 scores were 65 and 46.
They were not known taggers who shut him down, Holman kept him to 65, Sutcliffe kept him to 90 in a run with rather than tag role and Nick Robertson kept him to 46 in the semi.
He is very important to the Giants game and now that coaches know how easy it is to shut him down by sending a ‘run with’ type player to him I expect that it will happen a lot. If he gets a physical tagger(somebody with a bit of niggle/mongrel) he might struggle to score 70.
600k+ for a player who could be shut down by Paddy Dow.. no thanks
FYI his first 6 games will be Geelong, Melbourne, Bulldogs, Essendon Swans, Suns. The cats,Bombers and suns will definitely put a tag on him the other three probably will but they might see how he goes in the first half before making the move. IMO he’s the biggest trap in supercoach for 2020
