Weekend Review – NAB Cup GF

Written by Motts on March 15 2010

Western Bulldogs
S Higgins – 105 pts, midfield/forward DPP, $472k. Pretty damn convincing.
B Hall – Gave you another 101 reasons to block his brain fades from your memory.
R Murphy – Tempted us all again with an 83. Just remind yourselves he only played 13 games last year and averaged 66.62.
A Cooney – If you pay $484k for a bloke you expect more than 77 pts. This is on the back of a 62, an 84 and a 60. You’d have to either be a Bulldogs supporter, a family member, or a ‘ranga to be game enough to pick him.
D Cross – Has performed pretty consistently this year but the 70 pts he had on this night was his worst game so far.
T Williams – Last 2 games have returned 63 and 55. At $228k that makes him worthy of backline consideration.
B Moles – Must be considered for your midfield bench. In order from his first game to last night’s has scored 68, 77, 45 & 50. Watch to see if he gets named for R1.

St Kilda
N Riewoldt – Took some amazing contested marks. 113 pts. Man love.
J Blake – Had one out of the box and scored 101. Played 22 games last year – if you’re injury averse why not consider him and his 75 average for $400k?
B Goddard – Worth every cent of his $613,600 price tag. 99.
N Dal Santo – If you’re not going to Ablettise your midfield, I reckon you’d be giving this guy some serious thought. Averages 115 but scored 95 on this occasion.
J Gram – His 85 was enough for me to make some room for him in my backline. Again.
L Montagna – Didn’t crack the ton in the preseason scoring only 84 here proving once and for all that he’s overpriced.
S Gilbert – Got posterised by BBB all night. Had 72 DT points but only 45 SC points underlining again why SC is a better comp that truly reflects the contributions of the players to team objectives.
S Fisher – Twisted a knee/ankle early in the game leading to a -8 score. Wait to see how he recovers this week before pulling the trigger on him.

  1. Oh Barry, you are such a tease. It may result in a huge hangover and a massive dose of regret but I am extremely tempted to try this bad boy. However, brain fades aside, he is old and may be susceptible to injury, especially with his previously dodgy knee.
Even with the high probability of longer term pain, the promise of some short-term highjinks has me mightily conflicted.

  2. I am on the Big Bad Barry Bandwagon – as you said, if he performs well for the start of the season the worse he’ll cost me is a draft pick – and if one of my rookies on the bench is performing well then I could upgrade Barry to a premium forward.

  3. Picking Barry Hall in my forward line (at the expense of Johno Brown) gave me the extra cash to pick Luke Hodge in the guts. Win, win.

    1. Armitage – 47 (was a little wasteful)
      Everitt – 79 (consider)
Harbrow 59 (with 80 DT score – very wasteful)
      Gia 60 (with a 93 DT score – ditto)

      1. Extremely strong mids at the expense of fwds (Rioli hasn’t been on the park yet, Higgins the best of bunch but with a sub-90 average in ’09) and backs (Ladson & Waters both coming back from injuries – a risk that could pay off or fail miserably). All your subs seem sound except for Gumby – plenty are prepared to take the risk which, of course, is part of the game, but he presents a bigger than average risk.

  6. Hey boys!
Since we are getting close to the opening bounce maybe we can all assess each other’s teams on the Rate My Teams thread to save time and Mottsy’s credibility???
    Happy to assist, Deano

    1. Gee Deano, I think that’s being a little harsh. The only blokes I’d question from Frank’s team are Polo and Thompson. Yes, the midfield looks a little light but otherwise it’s a team that looks like it’s going to take the park week in, week out.

Due to the number of requests I’m getting to rate teams, I’m happy for others to provide advice. Just try to keep it constructive – it takes a lot of guts to put your pride and joy up for review from the world. If you do want your team rated, it’d be handy if you included how much cash you had left in the bank as well.

    1. Rate it Cam. Good even spread mate.

The backs look good bar taking the risk on the injured Waters and Hunt but I personally think it will pay off. Have a feeling Davis aint gonna do too much but will play. Nothing more frustrating that a 30 average sittiing on your bench and counting to your score. I think there may be a better option.

Love the forward line bar Walker. Didnt show enough for me last year and I had him. Pretty frustrating. Maybe a swap for Ballantyne?

      I give it an 8 out of 10. But…what do I know?

Mids are great but again I worry about having two first year players in your starting side. They both look like they will play and it will no doubt pay off but dropping Gazza and using the additional coin to upgrade on of those boys could get you started off well enough and you can swoop on Gary when his price inevitably drops.

      1. Hey Grimmo, thanks a lot for the advice. Like I said the emergencies aren’t set until round 1, so i will see who gets a game. In regards to walker, i had him last year as well, but i found this year there aren’t many good cheap options for the forward line. Isn’t Ballantyne on the long term injury list?

With the rookies on the field, i feel it is safer to have them in the midfield because they will score fairly well. I’m not sure about downgrading Ablett, because I really don’t mind if his price drops, as long as he scores well, which i think he will.

        THanks for the advice mate

    2. A little risky starting hunt & waters with those emergencies. Also i would swap bastinac for rohan so you can utilize him as a DPP with higgins and ziebel and probably pick podsiadly. I would suggest going for someone like dangerfield instead of cloke as well. Cloke doesn’t have much scope for improvement and others in that price range do. Pretty good team though. Pretty well balanced with some solid players and a few risks that could pay off in Ball, Walker, and Gilbee.

        1. Absolutely Maguire over Davis. he will get a game and is capable of providing 60-70 per week. He will go up in price.

I agree with Matt taking dangerfield over Cloke but I also cant help thinking Cloke will have a great season. He takes plenty of grabs and works very hard to find the footy.

Ballantyne just does not show up on any injry lists I have looked at and cant help think that the rumour mill is running hot. I will wait and see until the round 1 sides are announced.

Keep in mind with Ablett that the name of the game is increasing player values and trading down for a player about to increase in value. Ablett you will keep all year but if you have Martin from Ruchmond for example increase in value dramatically as he should and if Ablett drops in price like he should then you can trade out Martin for a far cheaper player about to increase in value and then upgrade a player like Ball into an Ablett. It means you get a great starting player round 1 in replace of Ablett and end up with Ablett instead of Ball in a few weeks time….giving you a much stronger side as the comp begins to settle.

          1. Ok Davis is out and Macguire in. I have $200 left.

I’m a Pies supporter, so I’m a bit bias, but i think this is clokes year. he is capable of sscoring 150+, but i know he can only score around 20 as well. I don’t like the idea of ballantyne, because its hard for small forwards to score well. Will consider if he starts round one.

Interesting point about Ablett. Do you have him in your team? Can you show me what you have done? (i wont copy lol).

          2. CAMERON…not sure why but I couldn’t reply to your comment so I hope you see it here. I am convinced I am right about Ablett. Time will tell. At this stage I dont have him in and I really like the look of the side I have on paper. Very even spread. Amazing how that extra 250K can be used to widely improve your starting team.

I would love to give you my side but I am in a private comp with Motts and Duck who so dilligently scribe on this very site and the comp involves a few bucks and some serious bragging rights so…I am reluctant to post it. Cant give them any insight at this stage. Hope you understand.

You should however take a copy of your existing team and then remove Ablett and play around with it. Its what I have done and its amazing how many possibilities and overall improvements you can come up with when he isnt in the side. Good luck with it mate.

          3. In FACT Cameron and all Supercoach Talk readers…the real reason I wont post my team is that I am terribly afraid of any criticism and I am deeply concerned that I will be found out for the pretender I am. Motts and co will smash me in due course…I dont need to hear about exactly how they are going to do it over the next 2 weeks before the action actually starts. Scared little chicken signing off.

  8. Motts you’ve been a great help:)
Just one more thing please, Goodes Or reiwoldt?
and opinions on h.shaw, Newman and enright as 3 main backman? Thanks mate.

    1. Nick Riewoldt gets my vote. He’s shown during the NAB Cup that he’s lost nothing, he has a huge motor on him and he’s still reasonably young. Goodesy is a champion, no doubt about it, but chances are that he’ll be spending more time up forward this year and less on the ball and he’s got 250+ games in those legs.
Shaw, Newman, and Enright are all perfectly good backmen who should score well for you.
      Good luck.

  10. To Barry or not to Barry, that is the question…

I’ve been firmly against Bazzafying my team. He’s just been one of those blokes, like Didak or Fev, who I just don’t select. I remember too clearly one night in 1999 in Icon Bar on Flinders Lane when he was hanging about on the next table, drank 37 vodka and raspberries and almost knocked out my mate.

But I feel myself slowly coming around…
