We’re Still Searching

Written by Motts on May 6 2011

SCT buddy Rustee has popped in to provide a new post for us this morning. Thanks mate!

Although Ed Curnow has proved to be a very fat cash cow this year and has the
capacity to score tons everyday, he still doesn’t have that Barlow-Factor.

So the search continues to find the next Barlow.

Here is a player who finished equal winner with Stephen Clifton in the J.J.Liston
Trophy. He is also the first player to achieve the double of winning both the
Fothergill/Round medal and the J.J. Liston Trophy.

He was delisted by the Demons in 2009. And he has made a solid start to this years VFL campaign for Port Melbourne.

Although I’ve searched for disposal stats and whatnot, I can’t find them – the VFL never seems to show them.  So here’s a simple player profile and a few of the stats I could find for his start to 2011.

Shane Valenti
Height- 176cm (2010)
Weight- 79kg (2010)
Position- Midfield
Age- 24
Past SC Average – 65.6 (9 games) 2008, 77.6 (6 games) 2009 (Including two 120+ in 2 of those games)

In the Best for 2011 – 2/4 games
Average goals for 2011 – 1.25

Last year

In the Best – 9/19
Average goals – 1.05

Overall I can’t see why the Demons let this guy get away – he certainly has the skills to play AFL and was a consistant performer for Sandringham when he was at the Demons.

  2. I think the big difference between Barlow/Podsiadly and players that have been recycled from other clubs after playing a few games is they have a real hunger to achieve and therefore every part of their life is focused on this goal. Curnow can possibly be put in this category as Ratts has said he has shown this dedication/attitude to come from nowhere. The difference between Curnow and Barlow from a SC scoring perspective is Freo have no Judd, Murphy, Gibbs, Simpson to hog the pie.

I noted in the WAFL a couple of weeks ago that Jarred Kayler-Thomson got around 40 possies. Some players just don’t have what it takes to succeed at the next level and that has nothing to do with ability – it is all down to attitude and psyche.
