What to do with Hille, Higgins and Maguire?

by Big Sexy on June 11, 2010

Before we get started, they are all expected to be out 2-4 weeks which isn’t massive, and a lot depends on how your bench looks…. If you have good coverage, then the answer is simple… don’t trade.

First up Hille:  No secret I don’t make my team revolve around rucks and don’t put a lot of faith in them due to inconsistency, and injury susceptabe (case and point).  I also don’t recommend wasting much money on your Ruck bench, especially when you don’t normally have an emergency named…. My advice:

1)    If you have someone playing on your bench, anyone…. Then don’t trade.

2)    If you don’t have anyone on your bench, then look at who your playing this week, if he’s a dud then wear-it.  Otherwise:

a.  Recruit a rookie for your bench to play short-term.  Skipper, Stanley or Simpson…. I’d go with Stanley as a short term prospect until Riewoldt is back.

b.  Upgrade Hille:  Ideally get the only decent Ruck in big Sandy, but if short on cash, then Krooz is a similar price, and if you want to make a few bucks I see Mcintosh is very cheap.

Next Up Higgins:  As a DPP you should be able to find an emergency in either your forward line or midfield so as not to trade….. if you insist on trading, then ROK is still a bargin.

Lastly Maguire:  I got him for 100k and he has served me very well, and I’m happy to see him do well….. but given his injury history and the fact I’ve made some good coin.  I think I will get rid of him given I have Silvangi and Tadgh sitting on the bench.  Whist both must be close to playing, I like the look of Duffield at the price, and with a few bucks in the bank I can do a straight upgrade and keep a few bucks in the bank….  If you don’t already have Hodge and Goddard you should be reading the site.  Another good option is Gilbert.

Tell me what your gona do….

I have Maguire and Higgins to contend with. I see Higgins as a keeper, and i dont care about his price drop at all. I was lucky enough to get Hitchcock back this week to cover him for now, so i will keep higgins for the latter part of the season.

As with Maguire, he is currently on the feld covering for Broughton, who got injured the week i brought him in. Maguire has been good, but I am not going to trade him just yet. I dont have any defensive cover, so I am going to play one man short. My opponent does not have him, but i am averagin over 100 points per game more than him, and i should win comfortably.

I have been tossing up over several trade options, but with Luke Ball out, i have to pay Bastinac, and I will be trading in Gysberts, for Mtch Banner who hasnt played for ages. I want to grab Gysberts now so i have 2 bench options in my midfield.

I am willing to cop a zero from maguire, and hope i win this week. I am on top of the ladder at 7-1, so it doesnt really matter if i lose. I am wwaiting to see what options are available next week, and i’m hoping i get broughton back next round.

that;s my thinking. any comments would be greatly appreciated, but its not necessary.

i’m holding onto maguire, mainly because i have no cover at the back. I have schoenmaker, Trengrove and Davis all a bit ropey so i’m in a quandary. Either i keep maguire and upgrade one of the others (i’m thinking schoenmakers to carazzo would be good). Or upgrade maguire to a gun (gilbert or gilbee) but i’m stuck with schoenmakers et al.

any thoughts. (6 trades left)

Sounds like you need players on the field and you don’t have many trades left and Maguire will be on field more than Shoenmakers so i say do the Shoenmakers trade.

with only 6 trades left, i reckon it depends on your opposition. if u think its gonna be a win, keep him, and play shoenmakers/trengove. If you are fighting for the 8, upgrade to gilbert/gilbee. It might help if you can post up your whole team, and maybe even the opposition’s team so we can advise where you are stronger/weaker than your opponent.

thanks for the advice guys, let me just set the scene for you. It’s my first year doing supercoach (i’m from england.) and joined the league with all my aussie mates. I’m currently 3rd and averaging 2066 a round i’m now 6-0-2 and on a 4-0 run playing last years champ who likes to talk a big game so would love to beat him and go 5-0. Basically my goal is to win the minor and see what happens in the finals. His team is good but not as good as mine, i have a feeling he’s just playing for the top 8 and gonna tear it up in the finals. any thoughts?

if thats the case, i reckon dont trade, and it doesn’t matter if you dont win- its better to be prepared for the finals rather than waste a trade to try and win a normal home and away game. If u think u can win it, then dont waste a precious trade.

By the way, thats a great average for a first year player. I only average 1800 in my first year, 1900 in my second, and this is my third year and im averagin 2186.

I got burnt big time come finals time because i didnt have trades to cover injuries, so try and save as many as you can.

OUT Maguire IN Gilbert – Due to no bench cover
OUT Trengove IN Gysberts – Thinking is that Trengove has just about maxed out and Gysberts will only go up from here.

Left me with an extra 100k in the kitty. Holding onto Higgins as i think he has something left in him for the later part of the year.

10 Trades left. Hoping i wont have to trade for the next few weeks now.

Four injury concerns for me: Maguire, Hille, Davis, J-Pod (i know they named him but i’m predicting a late withdrawl).

For reference:
BACKS: Goddard, Hodge, Malceski, Gilbert, Waters, Waite, Sheppard [Emerg: Silvagni & Maguire]
MIDs: Ablett, Swan, Pavlich, Murphy, Barlow, Judd [Emerg: Gysberts &Trengove]
RUCKS: Kreuzer, Skipper [Hille, Fitzpatrick]
FWDS: Didak, Brown, Harvey, Goodes, Podsiadly, Franklin, Rockliff [Emerg: Rohan & Davis]

One trade: Warnock out and Skipper in. Keeping all the injured blokes for now primarily due to some DPP’s provide and bench coverage plus i believe Hille in particular is worth keeping. Skipper gives me the third playing ruck that Warnock was supposed to be for me. 8 trades left now & $115,800.

I’ve had to change the structure alot from previous weeks with Pav stepping into the midfield and Rohan heading to the fwd bench so i’ve got an emergency in case J-Pod is a late withdrawal. Sheppard comes off the bench and has been scoring relatively similar to Maguire anyway.

Weighed up who will score more between Gysberts and Rockliff and went with Rockliff after his last two weeks.

If i knew J-Pod was definitely out i’d swap Pav fwd and Rohan to mid bench and put Gysberts on the field.

[With multi DPP it does increase options but it also makes it alot bloody harder to explain your strategies without a diagram].

i have $80k in the bank with 9 trades left

Is one of your mids a DPP that can be swapped with Higgins?
If so Higgins can sit on your mids bench and one of your bench mids can play in the midfield.

If you have Rohan on your mids bench you can do a direct swap.
Fyfe is on an extended bench that will be finalised around 5 this afternoon, so be aware that you may be forced into a late trade.

definitely play both fyfe and watts. its no use wasting a trade if u cant help it. if ur fighting for a top 8 spot or really want to beat an opponent, then trade out mayne.

either way, keep higgins- hes not wort that much and he is a keeper for finals time IMO.

I was planning on trading out Maguire at some stage anyway so i guess now is as good a time as any. Plus if i didnt i have no cover in defence as i have Davis (out) and Roberton as cover. So it is a no brainer for me to replace him. So my upgrade went:
Out Warnock in the ruck for Bass (cheapest there is) as i have cover there in Trengove.
Out then the Goose and in Gilbee. Pretty happy with that as it completes my defence which now is
Goddard, Hodge, Malceski, Waters, Gilbert, Enright, Gilbee.

I also have Higgins but young Hitchcock is back so he can cover for a few weeks i have Watts as cover as well if need be.

Also, it looks like Luke Ball might be out for a few weeks as well with a groin injury, Malthouse is uncertain when he will come back, but, being a Pies supporter myself, i reckon Malthouse will rest him so he’s ready for finals. So, he might need to be traded out soon, unless he plays. THe Pies have a week off after Monday, so hopefully he can be better after that.

6-8 Weeks! Thats pretty significant in the lead up to the finals you would think. Hopefully Ottens is back after the break along with Mooney after the break so there are other targets in the forward line. I cant beleive Pods is now the one target forward! Pretty incredible really.

With reagrds to the Maguire trade, I personally had enough cash left to straight out trade for Sam Fisher. I have Fisher in each year as I see him as St. Kilda’s version of Corey Enright who I also have.

Fisher gets marks from opposition kicks which is always handy, and he is a great kick. I now have a fully loaded backline with premiums in every posy.

Carrazzo would be a good option in midfield for me in the coming weeks so that I can swap him with the multiple DPP defenders I have in my team.
DPP’s are only as good as ur best emegency players, as u will only use a DPP to play a valid emergency in case of injury/suspension.

Not unless you need him on the field this week. Plenty of other cheap midfield options will become available towards the end of the year as the teams that fall away from finals contention begin blooding the youngsters. Hell Port may even start playing Banner again.

At this point I’d say save the trade.

Been holding off making any trades this week hoping I’d get some sort of cue in regards to the risky(ish) move of bringing is Gysberts (Thinking Trengove). Should I just hold off, as my midfield bench is reasonably strong? I do need to start upgrading players soon, so will need the cash from somewhere.

What do you guys think?
$210 in the bank, 8 trades left – playing for league

Goddard, Hodge, Shaw, Waite, Malceski, Hunt, Waters – Webberly/Silvagni
Ablett, Bartel, Selwood, Barlow, O’Keefe, Dangerfield – Martin/Trengrove(mel)
Sandilands, Nat – Skipper/Lobbe

i think it may be too much money on the midfield bench, and not enough on the field in your forward line. If you want Gysberts, maybe do a double trade, get him in, and upgrade one of your forwards to a premium.

Happy with 506 with 5 played (Judd, Murph, Kreuz, Waite, Boomer) and GAJ wearing the C tonight but SC doesn’t matter this weekend as i’m going to bask in the glory of last night’s stellar win for the rest of the long weekend before work on Tuesday where i’ll get to relive it all again!!!!!
