What To Do?

Written by Motts on July 23 2013

About this time every year our traffic starts to drop off as the less committed among us start finding other things to interest themselves. So to those people that may be visiting the site for the last time this year thanks for dropping past and helping to make the site what it is – a great community where we can discuss not just SC but all things footy.

For the rest of you who, like us, are going to be at one hell of a loose end once the final game is played this year, I’d like to get your opinion on what we should do with the site in the intervening months.

Yes there’ll still be sporadic updates on what’s happening with trades, injuries, the draft, the Brownlow etc but for a lot of the time we won’t have much to put up.

In the past I’ve gone with a bit of bit of a personal favourite – horse racing tips – but I understand that’s not everybody’s cup of tea.

So if you still want to keep the connection with the community over the break, do you have any recommendations for what we can run with?

  1. I’m always here :p, been here since December 2011, guess we could do random polls for other sports

  2. I’m like Nateo, this is my second home. Actually I spend more time here than at home. You’ve obviously got the brownlow, draft, trade period, free agency period, per season draft to cover. Could do a phantom draft maybe. Could also do a weekly or fortnightly update from people that go and watch training. I go down occasionally so am happy to update on who’s firing, who’s injured and which young guns you should look out for at the eagle.

  3. I check all through summer just in case motts has done a cheeky movers.
How about a movers based on the trouble makers during the break? Just as long as you stay away from the saints.

  4. Finals chat is obvious and i’ll happily collate/run the Brownlow comp like last year. Reminder, last year’s award for “Person Who Most Closely Thinks Like An Umpire” went to 1st – Stevo, 2nd – josh and 3rd Angusegg ….. whoever they are!!

Like the general sports banter idea from Nateo too. Cricket, A-League, Tennis, Golf – plenty happening over the non-football period.

When we are 8-0 down in the Ashes it’ll make for some very interested debate!!

Personally my summer attention is on my own cricket and the A-League. Really got into the A-League fantasy football over last summer and will be looking to get another high finish in that this upcoming season.

But habits are hard to break and this is typically the first page i get onto when i access the Internet.

    I love you’se all!!

  7. I would happily engage in chatter about the Spring Racing Carnival, I guess similar to the punting posts and we can all post our specials and thoughts on how to win a quid over the break.

  8. I dominate in most fantasy leagues, but not A-league, would love a weekly a-league section

NBL as well, but I think I’m the only one who plays fantasy NBL

  9. Love the ideas about branching out to other sports but also What about a Team by Team review. Every week do a new team and look at predictions for next year.

    Potential Keepers next year
Who is poised for a break out
Guys that now one should ever touch again

    then some non-supercoach topics

Where they will be on the ladder
What the team needs to change to improve

Could be one thread or multiple and would last most of the off-season

    Just an Idea

  10. The NFL season starts soon so my focus will shift to winning a fantasy football championship in that league! No idea why the missus calls herself a football widow?!

  12. I bet if I looked through the site statistics there would be a direct correlation between the number of trades a person has and the number of visits per week for that person.

Note: A couple of seasons ago there was a hot profile photo in the supercoachtalk facebook section (top right side of the site) and I bet that skewed the stats!

  13. In terms of fantasy sports, I’m an NBA and NBL fantasy man outside of AFL. Dabble in EPL to an extent, but always seem to lose interest in the fantasy side of it mid-way through the competition.

From a site articles point of view, I have a few thoughts:

Maybe run a SCT group in say, A-League and NBL. Just a quick run-down of the previous round and the upcoming week mid-way through each week is all that need be dedicated to it (personally, happy to put my hand up for the NBL side of things). It’ll keep people coming back to the site through the lonelier times of the off-season if we are able to get a few interested. It also gives us fantasy addicts some competition with people from the SCT community.

Like you have said, there are the obvious off-season items that will get a lot of attention. Dedicated threads to the draft, trade week, the finals and the Brownlow are always good.

Sporadic off-season news postings are always helpful as well, whether it be from mainstream media or those with their ears close to their clubs.

That kind of leads onto pre-season articles on team/player analysis of how we think that they will go. Maybe some form of positional player “power rankings” or the odd article discussing premium and breakout candidates. While it is sometimes redundant if done too early out from the season, it is always fun and promotes good discussion.

The other idea that I have always liked is a season re-cap. Whether it be by club, positions, whatever. The only problem there is that by the time the other off-season football activities have been completed, it is quite a while since the end of the fantasy season and people may have lost a bit of interest it in.

  14. I’d be interested to hear a bit from MJ. Starting team selection, trade plan all for this years team etc etc. If I’m not mistaken this is his second high ranking year so the bloke must be doing something right.

    And spring carnival tidbits. #Ipunttoomuch

  17. I think most of the guys have touched on this, but a SCT league in most of the fantasy websites would be good. EPL, A-league etc.

  19. Over here in Germany, I’m right into the football/soccer (Bundesliga). Won a tipping contest during the Euro2012 tournament and came 8th (out of 95) after the last season. Bayern Munich is a lock to win everything again this season but the rest of the competition is pretty even. There are good odds to be had if anyone is interested in a few tips/or even a write up. Would be glad to do it during AFL off season……

  20. I’m happy to write about how to get stains out of your clothes, how to make a million bucks sitting at home working 3 hours a week and where to get Viagra cheap… oh wait! That’s my spam folder…

  21. How about during the offseason a thread where people make up a full side of supercoach players they will never EVER pick again and their reasons for that decision.

Might come back to haunt some in mid 2014.

Also, there has to be discussions of who will have a breakout and why, who was once a premium but now should be avoided, etc.

Team strategies too, now we have seen how crucial loopholing is, and which teams are the best source of donuts due to “the fix”ture.

Half the fun is in planning your team.

  22. I think we should all chuck in a few Bob and create a perpetual SCT group trophy, withthe winner being presented at an end if season party held at a pub central to the organisers.
What I would also like to see is a write up on mature age prospects in the off season, the more Sam Dwyer’s and Brett Goodes I can find the better!

  23. Haven’t been the biggest viewer of these sites until this year, as i haven’t had as much time to do my own detailed research – good to get other points of view.

Over the summer, i like a few of the above suggestions:
NBA – plenty of people seem to have their own ESPN or other fantasy side, plus there are games nearly every day, so for the punter, a good multi can always be had!
Horse Racing – how did your tips go last year? Could get a select few keen horse pundits to each do their tips, bet with a notional amount per day/week and give the reader a running tally of how each ‘expert’ is going. Could be a Friday/saturday update with tips then a monday wrap up – get a few people helping and it can create some fun content and banter (Especially if we get a tipster with some handy tips!)
EPL – seems everyone has a crack at these teams as well, mind you interest falls away quicker with these fantasy teams.

  24. Firstly, have to say a big thanks to all those that run the site and all the SC that regularly post useful information and comments … so very useful to those that are new and ‘learning’ this comp like myself!

Love all the banter and all the comments and most of the suggestions above are all great ideas!

I’ve played cricket all my life and love the aussie sports and love the idea of the cricket comp (didn’t join this for the ashes though as too much on with work, NRL SC and day to day life, sorry Catta!) so would be keen to join the league over the aussie summer … just seems the norm! Footy in the winter, cricket in the summer, if you know what I mean?!

Regardless, I’m well and truly hooked now and will stay in touch as the year progresses.

P.S the missus says she hates you all and if I get involved in any other SC she may well divorce me!!

    Cheers all!!

  26. IDEA

Maybe we could get a representative of each club to write a review of the 2013 season for their club. It could be SuperCoach flavoured or it could just be a general appraisal of the season that was. They could then be released one every 2nd day or something and that would keep us going for a month. Maybe that can fill in our October.

I’d happily run the rule over North’s year for the site.
