Who’s Better?

by Motts on May 13, 2010

This isn’t just about SC scores. Imagine you’re Kevin Sheedy at GWS and the AFL has allowed you to have one but not both. Which one would you pick?

Gazza’s a year younger and his style of play has been less bash and crash than the Juddster so i’d feel i’d get two more seasons out of Gazza. He’ll still be playing when he’s 32-33, possibly as a more permanent fwd.

Judd’s ability to shrug tackles is unparallelled and he deals with a tag better. He also has better leadership skills, more hair, and gets the hard ball better than GAJ.

GAJ has no significant injury lurking in his shadow (Judd-Shoulders). Playing more games by the end of his career is almost a certainty. I better shut up know before i jinx him into an injury. Also GAJ is not noted for being a dirty player and being suspended for it unlike someone else…

Hey hey hey!!! This poll isn’t about pressure points!!

And I haven’t seen Judd miss a game because of his shoulders the whole time he has been with Carlton. GAJ has missed games regularly – the last only a week ago because of suspect hammies.

Fair enough. But how long do you back those shoulders for? 1 year, 2 years, 3 years..? I think it is a matter of when not if. But if we are to discuss on field merits only i reckon you could flip a coin and not come out wrong.

Little bit of extra information:

Gary Ablett

Age, height, weight: 26 (tomorrow) 182cm, 88kg

Games, goals: 174, 231

Best and fairests: B&F 2007-2009, 2nd in 2008, 3rd in 2005, 2006

All-Australian: 2007-08-09

AFL MVP: 2007-08-09

Brownlow: 2009, 3rd in 2008

Premierships: 2007-09

Strengths: An ability to keep his feet and rarely get taken down in a tackle. Excellent stamina, good top range speed, tough over the ball and team orientated. Also kicks the team lifting goal and can take an overhead grab one-out.

Weaknesses: Nothing obvious

Chris Judd

Age, height, weight: 26, 189cm, 87kg

Games, goals: 182, 168

Best and fairests: West Coast: 2004-06, Carlton 2008-09, 2nd in 2003-05, 3rd in 2002.

All-Australian: 2004-06-08-09

AFL MVP: 2006

Brownlow: 2004, 2nd 2009, 3rd 2006

Premierships: 2006

Strengths: Like Ablett, virtually impossible to tackle. Non-stop running, prolific team-lifting possession, tough as, natural on-field leadership, Judd covers most bases.

Weaknessess: Is he an elite kick or just a good one? I favour the latter. Not a great set shot for goal.

Judd isn’t a great overhead mark and he turned it over a fair bit against the pies so can we rely on his disposal under pressure?

HGL
At the Eagles he used to go forward to break the tag ala GAJ now and took some excellent contested pack marks while averaging 105 goals per game. At the Blues they can’t afford to give him this role as it detracts too much from the midfield output.

I picked GAJ in the vote, but you couldn’t go wrong with either.
Given that the rest of your team is likely to be smaller bodies, you’d probably go Judd for the hard ball gets – He has proven himself in a non-superior midfield in recent years, whereas GAJ hasn’t had the ability to do so.

As much as it pains me to say it because of his disloyalty, Judd is the master.
Although in raw skills and stats they are similar, he brings more to the table than GAJ in terms leadership and inspiration ability under adverse conditions. Has proven himself in a strong team as premiership skipper and currently in a weak lineup where he gets a strong tag weekly and little team mate support.
I hope GAJ goes to GC17 to prove that he can also develop leadership skills and show that he can perform consistently in an underachieving team.
I also really hope he announces the move soon so Bomber can rest those sore hammys more often as I don’t have him.

I’m trading out Bob Murphy/Rioli, and I would like some opinions regarding which combo I should run with

1. Pavlich/Daniel Hughes (Melb)
2. Didak/Rohan
3. Varcoe/Fyfe
4. a better duo that I haven’t thought of 8)

F/L is; ROK/Higgins/Gia/jPod/Ballantyne/Bob/Grundy….(Rioli/Rocky)

I wouldn’t go for Didak, partly because he plays for Collingwood and partly because you would be paying top dollar. I think your better off not placing all your eggs in one basket. Trade one down and hold off on the other until you can spot someone of real value in the fwd line who would end up being a keeper. I know it’s easier said than done, because i am having similar issues.

I’m not sold on JB’s fitness, I have him in my DT, and am wondering if I should trade him out.
Didak has scored 100+ every week bar two and is a traditional 100+ SC scorer. He is presently 45k under his pre-season value and I can’t see him getting any cheaper.
I like Rohan, and agree with a couple of opinions expressed on this site that he is going to get better.
I’m not concerned that Didak plays for Collingwood because I don’t hate them. 8)
