Worst Moves Of 2019

Written by Schwarzwalder on June 19 2019

Wighty asked the question in the Polling Station and we’re keen to see these answers as well 😉

Wighty wants to know what your worst trades of the year were till now.  Over at Team Schwarz we were quick to jump on Justin Westhoff when he dipped to $350k…….if nothing else, he’s in the team as a back-up Ruckman.  Scored a 90 over the weekend otherwise it’s been an endless supply of 60-somethings…..and he’s still around $350k, bugger.

So what’s been your worst move for the year, Coaches?  Tell us all about it……..

  1. Starting with Kade Simpson by far. Very lucky I traded him out R3 for Whitfield or I would have been bleeding points.

Honourable mention: Bringing in Robbie Young to avoid a donut, due to Danger, Moore, Bines and Drew being out. He repaid the faith with a whopping 17 points. Should have just taken the donut.

  2. Toby “The Thug” Greene

For 3 Years I have laughed at my mates who have bought him for top dollar as he guarantees to:
    A. Get injured putting the ball down ready for a set shot or
    B. Finding some way to relive his Zagame’s brawl on the footy field and get rubbed out for a couple of weeks

This year I thought things would be different, maybe getting more mature and the loss of Shiel exposing him to some more midfield minutes. How stupid I was to break a rule I’d always had, he is now on the front cover of my Black Book and won’t even look at a green flavored snake at half time the same…..

  3. PTSD coming back at me;

Round 3 trading Dunks out to Boak sure Boak was great however i then used a trade in 14 to get back Dunks in after him killing it in the midfield

Round 6 trading Scott to Ross instead of Stack =[

Round 8 Trading Brad after his 3 70 odd scores before he showed form with Mattt going out of the side going 100+ in nearly every game after then

Round 9 trading Cogs apposed to Matt Crouch (Needed to trade was faced with a doughnut) Matt missed the next 3 games and Cogs only missing 1 game and a huge 200

Round 12 Cashing out Rob to ‘upgrade’ Hore to Houli

Round 13 i hope I’m wrong but Choosing Bewley over Clarke, Talks are Cerra is coming back into the side for Bewley this week.

      1. mate that’s more than a fair share of trades that turned out crap after you thought/hoped they would be good moves, ah hindsight…so bring on 2020 season or are you going ok after those moves?

  4. Hoff over Dunkley in Rd8.
Trading out then back in Hore but wasn’t too bad a move as Scrimshaw made 200,000 and B Scott was traded to bring M Hore back in.
W Hayes and L Stocker as downgrade targets and both lasted 3-4 weeks until they were traded.

  5. It’s the moves I didn’t make that have hurt me much more than the ones I did make.
Missing out on O’Brien, Stack and Miers in particular.

  6. No major regrets this season, which is a first. Still plenty of time… 😉

Bit miffed to have missed out on Rozee and Stack, probably lost around $240k combined with the cows I took instead, which is a whole additional upgrade.

Bit annoying to see RoB rip out a huge score last week after I’d traded him out a couple of weeks earlier. That being said, he became Josh Kelly, so it only “cost” me 53 points last week, and should gain me plenty over the remainder of the season. Just a timing thing from a cash perspective.

  7. Starting Steele over Taranto based purely on Steele’s bye only to have him get injured right before his bye.

Learnt a few key lessons this year, one of which is having a couple an extra player in the last bye in your starting team isn’t the end of the world.

  8. Rage traded Dunkley instead of Darling after round 4. Have had to carry Darling all season as a result and will now likely trade Dunkley back in this week for $150K more than I sold him. This is because I am an idiot.

  9. I’ve had two that haunt me.

Traded out Hore after he got dropped and didnt return R3. Got Gryan Miers but just hasn’t been as good.

Traded in Young to avoid a donut.

  10. My worst trade has to be a sliding doors moment when I traded Dusty, back in round 3. I had the choice between Z. Merret and A. Brayshaw. Guess which one I chose. I’m still hoping he closes out this season like he did last year.

A close second goes to waiting way too late to trade out Darling, whom I dumped for Billings, just in time for the latter’s form to fall off a cliff. Were this last week, it may have challenged for first place.

Special mention must go to my move 1/2 an hour before the start of the Blues vs Dogs game last weekend. Although not a trade error, my decision to take the C off Dunkley and put it on Cripps was a howler, in hindsight. Cost me a league win, that one.

  11. Where do I start….
Made Danger Capt in rd7 for 26pts… (this alone has destined me to a top 10k year at best – top 2k last yr)
Started with Westhoff – still got him :(‘
Traded out and in Hore, but got Miers as well – all good in end
Started with Ridley (what!… i know)
Balta to Petrucelle early – Pet served his purpose I guess
Apart from that, everything else hunky-dory ;)’

  12. I would say trading fyfe and dunkley out of my starting team …but at least their replacements in tim kelly and merret havent been terrible and netted me some cash at the time. Brought dunkley back in last week and considering bringing fyfe back this week haha.
Probably the worst was going early on robbie young and gardner. Im now staring down the barrel of having two non playing rookies in my fwd line

  13. Trading Hore to Parker round 3
Trading O’Brien to Young round 10
    Trading in Milera round 12

Lots of missed trades and choosing the wrong players to start with have cost me more though

  14. I think Young is probably the most common regret…i also tried to avoid a donut.
Starting vardy probably my worst but traded him to rob who i still have. However, cogs when injured, to shiel, was just dumb when i look back at the other options available at the time.

  15. My worst starting selection was Toby Greene; I cut him loose after round 1 or 2.

The worst trade was bringing in Whitfield the week he got injured. To add insult to injury, the then-injured player I traded out to do it, Zac Williams, was back the very next week. Doh!

In hindsight, I really should have kept ROB for the byes, and cashed in Mumford when he hit mid-$400s instead (I did the opposite). To be fair to myself, there were question marks at the time over just how long ROB would keep his job, and I had no way of knowing that Mumford, who up until that point had been averaging 99, would have a horror month and collapse in price, right when I needed him to be peaking.

But as bad as they look in hindsight, all three of these moves made sense based on the information I had at the time, so there’s no use getting too worked up about them.

  16. trading out Hore and Duursma early to get Whitfield, only for him to get injured that week and both of them tonne up

  17. R3 Hore to Rozee
R4 Dusty and Dunkley to Whitfield and Bowes

Could’ve done nothing and i’d have been MILES ahead. Hore only missed one week and is now widely discussed as a possible D6 keeper. Dusty and Dunkley both started super slow but from the moment I got rid of them they’ve done well. I’d happily have both in my team right now. Whitfield’s body has let him down a few times and I’ve moved him on and Bowes, wow, did I get that wrong!!!!

  18. Hmmmm let’s see what i remember lately,
Traded out M Crouch the week he returned; 103,
Traded in Pendlebury just before his bye; 60 something,
Traded in Cunnington just before his bye; 50-60?
WARNING! Traded out Newman and not Smith this week for Lloyd, and have traded in Logue for funds.

T/U Logue doesn’t make it to half time
T/D Logue doesn’t make it to 3/4 time

  19. Starting Greene.

Young to avoid a donut, and, this is so embarrassing,

Bringing in Rocky in round 9 for a 100, a 70 and not sighted since. Even when I did it I knew it was crazy, but desperate times and all that…….. NEVER, EVER AGAIN!!!!

I’m even contemplating keeping him as I’m low on trades and cash and need to complete my side first.

  20. Starting Mills. Also starting Brayshaw. I gave up on him 3 weeks ago and traded him. he’s now a potential bargain. I also liked the look of Hore on the bubble but ignored him thinking poor js

  21. More recently & it hurts writing this but buckle in.

To be fair, I broke the rule of never trade on a non-playing bye week but you’ll understand why below…

It’s Round 12 with the first week of the bye rounds upon us. The sun was shining, it was a beaut Friday and my team was looking at 2,000 with 18 players. Trouble was, I had 23 playing. I knew with 23 playing I was always due to cop it in the following weeks so my genius idea was trade out a playing player for a non-playing allowing me to make 3 trades the following week to allow 18 at Rd 13. Still a genius.

My boy Reilly O’Brien had delivered in spades for me, had value and Sauce Jacobs had kicked 5 in the SANFL the week before. No-brainer. Here’s a good idea, put Lobb on my ruck bench, play him the following week and then swing him forward Rd 14 when Grundy and Gawn are back to complete my forwards. He’s averaging over 90, Freo are firing and I love dual position players!! I love supercoach!!!!!!!

Saturday morning, I wake, I enjoy my day, living the dream. Sinking a tin on a mates couch and Jon Ralph’s terrible haircut interupts the Carlton game. ‘Breaking news out of Freo with Rory Lobb likely to miss the rest of the year with surgery due’. Ruined beer, ruined weekend. The trade at this point was a monumental disaster, but the best was yet to come.
Later that night ROB steps up for Adelaide with a fantastic 120 point game that deserved more. He was everywhere. Made a good amount of cash too.
Dees get spanked on Monday arvo.

Following weekend rolls around, Stocker has done something bad, Sicily plays forward, I play 15 players with Robbie Young deservedly getting the ass. ROB scores 180, makes about another $100k total and I’ve burned two trades to end up trading Rory Lobb to Rowan Marshall which also cost me an additional $30k as Marshall went up.

    I hate supercoach.

    1. Thats as bad as it gets….I can feel it in your “voice”. Perhaps we could start a competition to see if there is anything worse…..prize is…..let me think about that…a free trade ??

    2. Hang on …. so if you’d waited for final teams in the Ade game you’d have known Lobb was gone and you’d have known that ROB was playing solo ruck still. Oh wow, that IS bad trading!!

  22. Starting Mills was bad, keeping him thinking he would come good was worse.

Starting Hore over Clark(gee) was great. Coming to round 3 with Hore dropped and no real bad mistakes except Mills, I decided to trade Hore to Clark. We know how that went. Didn’t get Hore back in either.

Thinking ROB and stack would only be in for 3 or 4 games and passing on them has also cut deep.

  23. During the first two weeks or so, my Heeney > T Kelly sideways trade was awful, thank god for hindsight. Still wouldn’t mind bringing Heeney back in if he shows some decent return to good SC form post byes.

My round 10 trade week hurts:
Moore > R Young to avoid the donut
    Drew > Whitfield

One of them is gonna rot on my bench for the rest of the season, the other had to be traded out 2 rounds later. I don’t regret the Whitfield trade though.

  24. Bringing in Menegola the week he was a late out. Waiting three weeks to trade him to Whitfield who got injuried first game in my team.

Choosing to bring Sheed in over Zerrett for Dusty rd4.

  25. Think this might be up there, don’t think anyone will be including trading In ROB as part of their worse trades but here goes;

RD 5 in ROB & Mumford
ROB out RD 10 for Lloyd
Mumford our RD 14 for Gawn

    1. Should have just brought ROB in not Mumford.
    2. Most of ROB’s points didn’t make it to my total (Rd 8 only his second lowest score)
    3. ROB got me Lloyd cheap
    4. Mumford made me 64k and got me Gawn dealer than his starting price

  26. Williams for Whitfield for Whitfield To get injured & Williams to come back in the following week.

  27. This thread is providing great mirth on a miserable day while waiting for the 6.20 pain train. Am I the only sick puppy thinking like that ? Reckon we should follow up next week with a revised “never again” list.

    Rocky who ?

  28. Trading Heeney out after round 2 and getting in Worpel, only to trade Heeney back in two weeks later for Worpel along with missing out on Heeney’s two biggest scores for the year so far.

  29. Those freakin R3 corrective trades trades – Trading out Hore and Yeo.
Starting Green and Martin … and not trading in Stack and Baker

Swings and roundabouts .. Yeo to Libba allowed me to trade Greene to Kelly and later Libba to L Ryan. Lost 4 trades and plenty of $$.
