Reserves Rookie Review – Round 12

Written by Alza on June 9 2021

Another small week with most of the VFL having a bye due to COVID restrictions. Port Adelaide also had a bye in the SANFL. 4 of the Mid-Season Draftees debuted for their new clubs with West the only one worth mentioning as he was probably the Eagles best on the day.

SANFL

ADELAIDE
North Adelaide 13.7.85 def. Adelaide 6.9.45

Luke Pedlar $162.3k MID – 23 disposals (11 kicks), 7 marks and laid 5 tackles – 95 (51/6)
Kieran Strachan $146.7k RUC/FWD – 20 disposals (14 kicks), kicked 1.0, 8 marks (1 contested), 3 tackles, 3 clearances and 36 hitouts – 135 (100/9)
Josh Worrell $123.9k DEF/FWD – 12 disposals (7 kicks) and took 3 marks (2 contested) – 35 (65/9)
Tariek Newchurch $102.4K MID/FWD – 17 disposals (13 kicks), 8 marks, 5 tackles and 8 inside 50s – 88 (58/9)

Verdict: Strachan was among the best again but will probably only get a game when ROB has a rest. Pedlar had his best game of the season but at his price may not be that relevant while Worrell had a quiet day but is still a chance to debut anytime now. Newchurch was good without kicking a goal with Murray being the unused sub. New draftee Parnell had the 11 touches in his Crows SANFL debut getting 40 points

VFL

BRISBANE
Aspley 14.13.97 def. by Brisbane 14.14.98

James Madden $176.1k DEF/FWD – 13 disposals (7 kicks) and laid 5 tackles – 61 (69/4)
Tom Fullarton $164.8k RUC/FWD – 11 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 0.2, 3 marks and 15 hitouts – 53 (77/6)
Connor Ballenden $146.1k FWD – 20 disposals (16 kicks), 10 marks and 7 rebound 50s – 91 (90/6)
Nakia Cockatoo $123.9k MID/FWD – 8 disposals (all kicks), kicked 1.1 and laid 6 tackles – 61 (50/5)
Tom Joyce $123.9k FWD/MID – 21 disposals (13 kicks), 3 marks and 7 inside 50s – 72 (87/3)
Connor McFadyen $123.9k FWD – 18 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 3.0, 3 marks and laid 5 tackles – 93 (77/4)
Brock Smith $123.9k DEF – 13 disposals (7 kicks), 4 marks and 4 rebound 50s – 49 (68/6)
Henry Smith $117.3k RUC – 9 disposals (4 kicks), kicked 3.0, 3 marks and 4 hitouts – 51 (51/5)
Carter Michael $102.4k MID – 21 disposals (17 kicks), kicked 1.1, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 4 inside 50s and 6 rebound 50s – 91 (89/6)

Verdict: Not the biggest game by Madden but he could be a straight swap for Lester again unless they go with Ballenden who keeps reeling in the marks. I wouldn’t be going early on Ballenden with scores of 16 (from 55% TOG this year), 20 and 48 (both last year) although I believe that was in a different role. McFadyen and H. Smith kicked 3 goals each with Joyce and Michael getting 21 touches each

SYDNEY
Sydney 10.13.73 def. by Southport 12.16.88

Matthew Ling $163k DEF – 11 disposals (5 kicks) and laid 4 tackles – 47 (61/6)
Will Gould $123.9k DEF – 20 disposals (11 kicks) and had 4 rebound 50s – 57 (60/6)
Marc Sheather $102.4k FWD – 20 disposals (16 kicks), kicked 3.1, 6 marks and 4 tackles – 112 (62/6)

Verdict: New draftee McAndrew could only manage the 2 handballs and 7 hitouts for 19 points and is seen as a long term prospect. Gould had a good game with 20 touches while Sheather was among the best with his best game of the season

WAFL

PEEL THUNDER (FREMANTLE)
Peel Thunder 7.17.59 def. by Swan districts 10.7.67

Lloyd Meek $213k RUC – 13 disposals (5 kicks), kicked 2.0, 4 marks, 4 tackles and 34 hitouts – 102 (94/5)
Stefan Giro $170k MID – 12 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 2.0 and took 3 marks – 61 (78/5)
Luke Valente $123.9k MID – 21 disposals (12 kicks), 5 marks and laid 3 tackles – 78 (71/6)
Nathan O’Driscoll $117.3k MID – 20 disposals (14 kicks) and took 8 marks – 79 (55/8)
Joel Western $117.3k MID – 13 disposals (9 kicks), 3 marks, 3 tackles and 4 inside 50s – 53 (67/7)

Verdict: Meek was very good again and should come in for the injured Darcy this week, Giro and Western had quiet games while Valente and O’Driscoll had 20 touches each being O’Driscoll’s best game of the season

WEST COAST
Claremont 14.9.93 def. West Coast 9.12.66

Mark Hutchings $157.6k MID/FWD – 25 touches (16 kicks), 5 marks and 5 inside 50s – 86 (84/4)
Ben Johnson $123.9k DEF – 20 touches (14 kicks), 3 marks, 3 tackles and 4 rebound 50s – 78 (64/7)
Zane Trew $102.4k MID – 19 disposals (10 kicks), 5 marks and laid 4 tackles – 78 (69/7)
Connor West $102.4k MID – 30 disposals (21 kicks), kicked 1.0, 6 marks, 7 tackles, 8 inside 40s, 3 rebound 50s and 4 frees for (1 against) – 134 (110/8)

Verdict: Good games by all here with new draftee West the clear stand out with 30 touches and a goal. Hutchings has strung a few games together now and is a chance to play his first game of the year while Trew had a good game after being named emergency and Johnson has now played a few good games in a row. Draftee Collins could only manage the 8 touches in his debut for 38 points

  1. Question cause i’ve forgotten. What’s all the stuff after their stats.

    Eg. Gould says 57 (60/6).

    3

    0
    1. Points (average/games played).

There aren’t SC scores for 2s games, so Alza uses Fantasy Points (FA). Still a decent approximation.
