Reserves Rookie Review – Round 16

Written by Alza on July 7 2021

Welcome back for Round 16. No WAFL this week due to COVID restrictions but they should be back next week. Plenty going on with most lists getting their injuries sorted at the pointy end of the year. Let me know if there is anyone I have missed or if there are any changes to how best you would like this written or set out. Best of luck for the last 7 rounds of SuperCoach.

Josh Worrell $123.9k DEF/FWD – 11 disposals (10 kicks) and took 3 marks – 47 (65/11)
Lachlan Gollant $123.9k DEF/MID – 12 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 3.2, 3 marks (1 contested) and laid 3 tackles – 68 (57/3)
Ronin O’Connor $123.9k MID – 21 disposals (11 kicks), 12 tackles, 8 clearances, 4 inside 50s and 4 frees against (2 for) – 97 (72/10)
Brayden Cook $117.3k MID/FWD – 12 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 4.2, 5 marks (1 contested) and laid 6 tackles – 98 (49/10)
Tariek Newchurch $102.4K MID/FWD – 12 disposals (7 kicks) and kicked 2.0 – 54 (55/12)

Verdict: Strachan bounced back with a huge 50 hitouts this week. O’Connor had one of his best games with 21 touches, 8 clearances and 12 tackles putting his name up for selection. Cook also had his best game of the year with 4 goals while Gollant and Newchurch both kicked a few goals. Worrell was quiet and probably doesn’t come back in this season

PORT ADELAIDE
Central Districts 6.12.48 def. by Port Adelaide 9.3.57

Joel Garner $189.9k DEF – 22 disposals (16 kicks), kicked 1.0 and took 8 marks (1 contested) – 95 (59/11)

Jackson Mead $123.9k MID – 17 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 1.1 and laid 5 tackles – 81 (70/3)
Dylan Williams $123.9k MID/FWD – 4 disposals (3 kicks) and kicked 1.0 – 29 (57/10)
Jed McEntee $102.4k MID – 10 disposals (3 kicks), 3 marks (1 contested) and laid 6 tackles – 57 (73/9)

Verdict: Garner had his best game of the year and is a chance to come in but is not relevant at his price. Hayes continues his great year with 22 touches and 42 hitouts. Mead returned from injury nicely with a decent outing after being touted before the season. Williams was very quiet on his return to SANFL and McEntee was down on last week’s great game. Port had a lot of experience playing reserves this week in Hartlett, Clurey and Butters who would be next to come in

COLLINGWOOD

Verdict: A pretty dominant display from all of the AFL listed players in this game. Ruscoe, Wilson and Lynch were among the best with plenty of touches and marks between them. Keane was good down back with 7 marks, Henry and Ginnivan kicked multiple goals again. Rantall found plenty of the ball but was handball happy which lowered his score. I would expect a lot of these players to get another crack at AFL level this year so be watchful

ESSENDON
Geelong 16.6.102 def. Essendon 3.9.27

Zach Reid $166.8k DEF – 17 disposals (10 kicks), 3 marks and had 4 rebound 50s – 52 (69/3)
Ned Cahill $163.2k FWD – 11 disposals (7 kicks) and kicked 1.1 – 47 (78/7)

Verdict: Big loss here for the Bombers giving Reid and Durham plenty to do down back. Bryan was very good again and among the best. Cahill and Hird were quiet but a lot of the Bombers were in this game

GWS GIANTS
Casey 7.12.54 def. by GWS 8.7.55

Jacob Wehr $117.3k DEF – 9 disposals (7 kicks) and took 3 marks – 43 (67/7)
James Peatling $102.4k DEF/MID – 18 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 1.0 and had 5 inside 50s – 65 (96/9)

Verdict: Stone and Peatling were good down back in this one although Peatling didn’t get his usual marks. Wehr was quiet but a lot of players were, for reference only 3 GWS players scored 79 or more (Briggs, de Boer and Coniglio). Sproule and Bruhn were solid but with the Giants pushing for finals they may not be back this year

GEELONG
Geelong 16.6.102 def. Essendon 3.9.27

Verdict: Huge win by the Cats and it showed with everyone having good games. Guthrie was solid with 20 touches with Brownless and Stevens among the best with great all round games

GOLD COAST
Box Hill 15.21.111 def. Gold Coast 5.9.39

Tyler Brockman $172.7k MID/FWD – 16 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 2.0, 5 marks and laid 4 tackles – 85 (58/6)
Josh Morris $145.1k FWD – 22 disposals (19 kicks) and took 6 marks – 91 (59/8)

Jackson Callow $102.4k FWD – 13 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 1.2 and took 6 marks – 59 (65/3)

Verdict: Brockman had his best game of the year with 2 goals with Morris getting plenty of it in one of his better games. Reeves was great with 38 hitouts but Ceglar seems to be in career best form which seems to be a good move by the Hawks while Jeka had plenty of shots but 7 behinds ruined his day. Callow was solid but Downie continues to be quiet for a lot of coaches that still have him stuck on the bench

CASEY DEMONS (MELBOURNE)
Casey 7.12.54 def. by GWS 8.7.55

Neville Jetta $194.9k DEF – 19 disposals (13 kicks), 4 marks and laid 4 tackles – 74 (78/6)

NORTH MELBOURNE
Footscray 10.7.67 def. North Melbourne 8.8.56

Tom Campbell $333.1k RUC/FWD – 25 disposals (15 kicks), kicked 1.1, 9 marks and had 48 hitouts – 150 (133/3)

Ben Miller $123.9k DEF – 16 disposals (10 kicks) and took 7 marks – 64 (53/7)
Maurice Rioli $117.3k MID/FWD – 6 disposals (2 kicks), kicked 1.0 and laid 4 tackles – 36 (52/8)
Samson Ryan $117.3k RUC – 12 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 1.1, 6 marks, 3 tackles, 33 hitouts and had 5 frees against (2 for) – 87 (64/7)

Verdict: Mansell, Parker and Martyn were among the best all having over 25 touches. Parker showing his experience with a huge game and could be in line to make his come back to AFL level. Ralphsmith and Miller were solid in the middle as well with Ryan returning to the VFL and having a great game. I feel like he was hard done by in his debut not registering a touch but I think he gets another crack at some stage

Verdict: Great game for Joyce here down back with Clavarino chipping in nicely as well. Hunter was decent but isn’t doing enough to force his way in

SYDNEY

Will Gould $123.9k DEF – 17 disposals (15 kicks), 5 marks, 4 tackles and 4 rebound 50s – 82 (57/9)

Verdict: Gould bounced back nicely with a good all round game. Swans are flying at the moment and have a wealth of experienced players in the VFL so he may find it hard to squeeze his way in which would suit just fine this late in the season

  1. Great stuff as always.

Expecting Durham to debut this week or next and hoping Brockman can come back as cover.

  2. Fantastic Alza.

These reviews really help a lot. Matty Parker named on extended bench. I think he may get a run. No Edwards and Bolton looks to be playing hurt. He’s not overly relevant this time of year, yet with his DPP if he can hold down a spot, he could be cheap bench cover or a F7 loop.

    Thanks again mate.
