  11. North Melbourne 7.10.52 def Carlton 2.4.16 🙁

Well, so much for the ‘Carlton is going to be brilliant this year’ theory… in all seriousness though, we didn’t play anywhere near as badly as the scoreboard suggests. The two biggest problems I could see were that we sometimes overcommitted to the inside of a contest, leaving opposition players free on the outside, which backfired badly when we lost said contest; and stuffing around with the ball too much when we went inside 50, often over-handballing it in an attempt to find a free player, which is fine to a point, but eventually results in a turnover or stoppage if the opposition’s pressure doesn’t let up. Often it’s better to just have a shot. Had we done those two things better, I think the margin would have been a lot closer. The good news is that this is very fixable, and apart from that, we did a lot very well – our ball movement was slick, our pressure was generally good, and our work in and around the contest was much better than it has been – so there’s still cause for optimism amongst Blues fans.

With that out of the way, the scores:

    1. On the off chance that someone from Carlton is reading: in addition to the two tactical issues I mentioned, if we could move Davey back to defence (with the odd run through the middle), and see if we can somehow un-delist Madeline Keryk, we should be fine for the rest of the season.

      1. Having watched all games this weekend we just don’t have enough skilled players especially in the midfield. Our field kicking is going to have to improve drastically for us to win games this season.

        1. I think we’d improve a lot if we put Davey back where she belongs (say, 80/20 defence/midfield). She didn’t look out of place as a forward, so it’s good to know that she can play there if we need her to, but I think she’s of much more use to us elsewhere.

I’m not giving up just yet – a lot obviously went wrong, but there were plenty of things I think we did quite well. And for all the destruction on the scoreboard, we actually won the inside-50 count. In addition to the aforementioned over-handballing, our delivery inside-50 was often poor. If we can clean that up, and not concede so many shots from opposition entries (playing the best defender in the league in her natural position might help), I think we could see very rapid improvement.

And even if we don’t improve, and we win the wooden spoon a second year in a row, there’s still one positive to take out of today’s game: how good is Madison Prespakis!?

          1. Same not giving up love my Bluegirls just standard has improved across the competition so hopefully we can find some mids this year and have better delivery to our gun forwards

    1. At the top end, yes. But the average score so far has been 77 (almost identical to the average Supercoach score in the men’s season). It’s just that there’s a much bigger gap between the best and worst players in the women’s league, so you often get monstrously large scores at the high end.

Champion Data likes to go back over each game and review the stats, occasionally changing something if the stats caller misidentified a player or misclassified something during the game, so I’ll come back later tonight and post updated scores for every team of the round.

I can’t guarantee that none of them will change – it’s possible CD has not finished reviewing the games – but I doubt they’ll change much. In any case, each and every leaderboard update will come with a list of scores from every game attached, so if any scores do change, you won’t be left in the dark about it.

    1. Just read that No.1 draft pick Nina Morrison (GEE) did her ACL. She scored 167 in her first ever game and got the rising star. Bad luck for anyone that has her

  22. Apparently tonight’s game has been delayed because of rain. Come on AFL… that’s just embarrassing.

    1. Okay, it’s been raining pretty heavily, but still. So far we’re looking at a 7:59 start time.

Oh and for the love of God AFL, please don’t even think about cancelling the game. You have no idea how difficult that’s going to make my life!

  25. NEW RULES:

#1. If a game is cancelled before it starts and is not re-scheduled, the players named to play that game will be awarded their season average (taken at the end of the season) as their score for that game. If they do not play another game for the season, and thus do not have a season average, they will be awarded the season-average of all players of their *exact* position (e.g. all DEF/MIDs if she’s a DEF/MID, all pure FWDs if she’s a FWD, etc.) to have played at least 1 game for the year as their score for that match.

#2. If a game is abandoned after it has started, and is never completed at a later date, the players’ scores from the period of play that did take place will be scaled to the length of a full match.

#3. In the extraordinarily unlikely event that a game takes place but Champion Data fails to record the data, #1 will apply.

Hopefully none of these will ever have to be applied.

  26. Steve Hocking: Now that the lights are back on, play will resume, with the remaining 4:38 of the 2nd quarter to be played, followed by a 6-minute half-time break (the players will have already had 15 minutes due to the lights).
