  1. Great news for Carlton fans, with the League’s first ever Father-Daughter pick, Abbie McKay, to make her debut against Geelong this weekend.

  3. No quarter-by-quarter scores for the Cats/Blues game today, as I’m going down to Geelong to cheer the girls on. Full-time scores will be posted as soon as I get home.

    1. Well, that was worth the trip 😛

It was really a game of two halves. In the first half, Geelong played very well, keeping Carlton goalless (half-time score: GEEL 2.4.16 to CARL 0.2.2). With the second half we had (GEEL 0.3.3 to 1.6.12), we really should have won – Tayla Harris hitting the post twice from directly in front at short range didn’t help.

The Cats’ approach to the game was interesting: they tried to play keepings-off when they had the ball, denying us possession, and tried to shut down our run-and-gun ball movement when we had it. I suspect the Geelong coaching staff knew that if the game was played in the fast, open style we wanted (think the GWS game from last week), they would never have been able to keep up. So, they did everything possible to make sure that it wasn’t a played like that. Much to my annoyance, they succeeded. We were able to shut the keepings-off stuff down after half-time by manning (womaning?) up on the Geelong players a lot more closely, but they were still able to stifle our ball movement pretty well. Still, with some straighter kicking in front of goal we could have put them to the sword in the third quarter – the Cats were clinging on and defending for dear life for much of the second half. Of course, you could make the same argument about their first half, where they kicked 2.4, but we’re a team that is capable of scoring very heavily (and quickly). Geelong isn’t. So a large-ish half-time margin isn’t anywhere near the death sentence for us that it is for a team like them. If only we’d kicked straighter! It’s not the first time a visiting team has had accuracy problems at Geelong, but that’s no excuse. Certainly not for hitting the post from ten metres out directly in front (twice!).

Whinging aside, Daniel Harford and co. need to review the hell out of this game, because it provided opposition sides a blueprint on how to beat us. Every other team will have taken note of that. Collingwood, in particular, loves to turn games into these types of scraps, and we play them next week. I hope we have a plan-b by then.
