Standing at what seems like nine foot one with Inspector-Gadget-like extendable arms, Joe Daniher cuts an imposing figure on the footy field. In reality, his 200cm frame is nearly unstoppable when he gets a proper jump at the ball. After improving his SC-output by 17ppg in 2017, Daniher could be ready to explode in 2018 with more midfield depth (better delivery) recruited to the club.
Essendon are expected to improve after some good off-season trading and that should lead to an increase in scoring opportunities for Big Joe. The biggest query may be whether or not Daniher can properly capitalize, given the question marks on his kicking. In 2016, he was a bit wayward with 43 goals and 32 behinds. Daniher improved on that in 2017 however, falling just short of a Coleman Medal win with 62 goals and 37 behinds.
With the never-ending injury list (curse) of the premium FWDs this pre-season, Daniher looks great value, especially given his durability (hasn’t missed a game over the last three years!). While he might not end up with the highest average for a FWD in 2018, he could just about bring you the most pts over the course of the entire season (and save a trade in the process!). With a touch of natural improvement, there’s no reason why Big Joe can’t push his average up over 90+ .
Risk Rating: On a scale of 1-5……1 being safe & 5 being extremely dangerous…… Joe Daniher – Two Higgos! If he’s not a Top10 FWD, then he won’t be far off. Should be entering his prime years of SC-output. Show us what you can do, Joe!
