Burning Question – Rd3

Written by Schwarzwalder on April 8 2016

Macca suggested a thread for this Burning Question – Rockliff & Barlow: Trade/Hold?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last week, you’ll know that these guys have been the subject of much scrutiny in the SCT Community.  Since 31% of teams have Rockliff and 34% have Barlow, Coaches are scrambling to make the right call on this one.  But what is the right call?

Rocky averaged 132 SC pts over 18 games just two seasons ago.  After an ordinary run with injuries last year, he opened at the affordable price of $550k for the 2016 season.  After missing the NAB Challenge with hamstring tightness, Rocky has performed below expectations and is now out for (officially) two weeks with a calf strain.  Apparently it stems from his pre-season hamstring tightness, not a great sign.  With a Break Even of 184, Rocky’s value will take a big hit when he plays again.

Barlow is getting a game, even plenty of Time On Ground.  Unfortunately it’s the wrong part of the ground as Ross Lyon continues to inexplicably play one of his best ball-winners on a half-forward flank.  And don’t give me that ‘team structure’ excuse.  Surely there’s someone else that could play on a forward flank while Barlow wins some clearances in the middle (Walters, Ballantyne, Danyle Pearce, Ed Langdon?).  Only 61 & 60 from the first two Rounds have many Coaches with their mouse hovering over the Big ‘T’ Button.  Micky B has been named in the guts for the Derby but was also named there against the Suns.  Ross Lyon likes his mind games with the Supercoaches and this is no exception.  I’m aware of the first rule of Supercoach……Do not trade your premiums (apart from long-term injuries) but is Barlow even a premium anymore?  Did we all just get sucked in over the pre-season?  A Break Even of 174 means a significant price drop is inevitable.

So this week’s Burning Question……..let’s put it to rest, once and for all………should we trade or hold on Rockliff and Barlow?

** Just a quick word that the following polls have NO influence on the Community TEAM!  If you haven’t already cast your vote there, I urge you to head over to the latest Community TEAM thread from yesterday.  Thank you!  **

  1. Hey SCT community,

I’ve come to the conclusion that Rocky has to go, even if he comes back in 3 weeks ( calf injuries are fickle ) he’s going to substantially drop in price.

    I’m looking at these options…

T/U…Rocky out, switch Kerridge into the mids, switch M Brown fwd putting Papley on the ground & Johannisen into D4, also creating the dpp in def/fwd & mid/fwd to become active & $140k in the bank

T/D…Or straight swap Rocky out Parker in $30k in the bank

As always, thanks SCT coaches 🙂

  2. Barlow was ordinary last year and still averaged 93. Before that, he averaged 110+ in 2013 and 2014. He also had an excellent pre-season. I think I’ve just convinced myself (only just) to keep him – but if FURL puts him on the half-forward flank again this weekend, look out!
Rocky on the other hand, has multiple related health issues – back, hammies, calves. He’s out, and Libba (who I should’ve had from the start instead of BCrouch) is in.

  3. I’m holding both Rocky and Barlow and using my 2 trades to get the right rookies instead. They are both premiums and not injured for more that 4 weeks. Simples. JJ and Hall can wait IMO.
    steele > papley
    gresham > parish
$125k left over for first upgrade

  4. Freo are ranked 18th for scores conceded from centre bounces. Conceding 6.1 against the Suns. Yet Lyons has said he isn’t going to change anything. Surely if they suffer a hammering this week against West Coast its only a matter of time before Barlow comes inside and gets his hands on the ball. I’m holding Barlow for another week at least.

  5. Rocky OUT to Liberatore

    2nd trade will be 1 of the following;

T/Up — Gresham to Gray or Parker
    T/Down — Gresham to JJohanneson

  6. Also, with Gresham being dropped is it worth trading him out for Hewitt or Parish (I have all the other necessary rookies). I think I could just afford to trade him up to Parish but then I’d have nothing left in the bank.

    T/U Trade Gresham

T/D Save the trade for now until a better rookie target arrives

    Cheers everyone

  7. The traders over at AFL fantasy said that FURL has confirmed that Barlow will be moved back to the Midfield this week. I traded him for Papley as I needed the funds to get Liber in my team.

  8. Rocky is gone for me. I don’t trust this 2 week assessment as Rocky’s injuries are racking up all over his body. He is a soldier and will put his hand up asap, but his body won’t necessarily agree. Rocky out, R Gray in.

Barlow gets another week from me. Freo’s form has been well down and I’m hoping as they find their stride, so will Barlow. I’ll admit I’m largely crossing my fingers though. I’m using my 2nd trade on Gresham to Papley so Barlow is safe for now.

  9. I’m giving Barlow 1 more chance this weekend, being the Western Derby and hopefully he plays more time in the middle.
If he scores crap this weekend, he is gone!!!!!!

  10. I am still undecided on Barlow, I feel uncomfortable hoping week to week that the coach will give him midfield time but know that in the mids he will be a top ten forward. Last three scores against WCE are concerning: 66, 29, 88.

  11. I have both Rocky and Barlow and I’m finding the discussions around both Rocky and Barlow to be slightly askew from what the discussion should be based upon. I’m hearing a lot of coaches talking about price drops but these guys weren’t picked in our initial squads to generate cash, they were picked as what we perceived to be a discounted premium price. Therefore, the conversation needs to be about what we expect them to score from round 3 onwards.

Based on that principle and looking at the their SC scoring history, you’d expect Rocky to bounce back with regular 100+ scores IF and WHEN he is fit. Last season he spluttered through a few poor games and after a month off mid-season he scored 126, 101, 50, 135, 115, 145, 122, 146, 152 on the run home. Those scores are not the type of scores you want to miss out on. They’re saying two weeks for his calf.

Barlow on the other hand is a little bit harder to read. Just remember that Fremantle were pretty woeful in the first two rounds and they’ll be looking to bounce back hard. That said their next two games are against two PF teams from last season (WC and NM) before their draw seemingly gets easier both sides of the bye (they only play 2015 non-finalists between round 10 and 18).

    So my conclusion
    – Rocky is a hold IF you’ve got some decent rookie coverage
    – Barlow is also a hold as i can’t see Fremantle continuing on the poor run of form

Some would call it weak or conservative to keep them both but i’m calling it ballsy!!

My only caveat on these decisions is that if you are still within overall calculations then bite the bullet and chase the cash. Additionally, if you’ve missed the boat on a rookie or Aaron Hall then this is your chance to kill two birds with one stone and chalk it up as a correctional trade.

That’s my view as I sit over a coffee deliberating the decision. I’m sure i’ll change my mind many times during the course of the day. I eagerly await your thoughts.

  12. Oh man, Brad Crouch out!

As a Crows fan that’s super disappointing as I was really hoping he’d get a solid run in the side to really show what he can do.

As a supercoach, time to start tearing my hair out. At the start of the week I thought my troubles were bad with Barlow and Rockliff. Now you can add Crouchy and Gresham to that. What to do, what to do?

  13. Still not sure on trades for this week. Currently have Wingard, Steele, Rich, Rocky, Crouch and don’t have Papley, Hall, JJ… The one thing I do know is that I will need to put either Davis or Hewett on the field.

    TU: Davis
    TD: Hewett

Comment for trade advice. I have currently gone Rocky to Hall (Kerridge into Mids) and Steele to Papley but these are by no means locked in. Currently thinking if its worth leaving Rocky for this week and going Greshham to Mennadue and leaving Hall to next week?
    Cheers

  14. I have both Gore and Keays in my midfield, would be trading one of them be a priority over trading Gresham? And if so, which one would you trade? I wouldn’t mind keeping one for sub loophole

  15. Keeping rocky and barlow

    T/U – Option 1
    steele > parish
    gresham > papley
    $150k in bank

    T/D – Option 2
    steele > papley
    crouch > hall
    $40k in bank

    leaning toward option 1

  17. Do people think JJ can be a top 6 defender from here on in (so dis-regarding his previous 2 games)

    T/U – yes he will
    T/D – No he won’t

  18. As I don’t see him as better than D7/D8, he is simply a stepping stone to Houli or Rance. However, I’d love to be proven wrong and save the trade 🙂
